Missing in the Olde Marsh – An adventure for 4 or 5 characters of level 3 or 4!

Need a quick adventure to hook your players into the region? Are the PCs about to travel by boat? In this adventure, the characters find themselves washed up on a desolate shoreline after their ship sank in a magical storm. Will they find their way back to civilization? What dark forces are creating these undead monstrosities? Will they help the people of Marshtown, or simply make matters worse?

This adventure is designed to be played in one 4 hour session. It can be used to kick off a new campaign, or with few modifications it can fit into an existing campaign. Inside these pages you can find:

  • 4 combat encounters with difficulty scaling - Challenge your players with combat encounters relevant to the storyline. Guidance is also given to make encounters more or less difficult, and to suggest ways the characters might avoid fighting altogether.
  • 8 monster statblocks - Tired of flipping back and forth in the Monster Manual? The 8 statblocks included in this adventure are all you need to run it. Simply print and play!
  • 2 random encounter tables - Want to add a few more encounters? Two random encounter tables add 20 additional encounters, with half focusing on non-combat encounters
  • 3 location maps - These black and white maps can help you setup your encounters, or provide a visual aid for your players.
  • A detailed player handout - Tired of monologuing? This player handout details the villain's horrifying plan, if they manage to find out.
  • A dastardly villain - Looking for a new villain for your campaign? This adventure hints at dark forces beyond what the characters discover, perfect for setting up future adventures.

How many Necrozombies are intended to be in the base Captain Walker encounter. I don’t feel like it’s clear. The adventure lists that there were 12 sailors but 12 necrozombies plus captain walker seems like it may be too deadly to me. If that’s what it is than I will trust the author but I’m just curious. As I’m running this for a large group (7) and I need to scale it up.

Hi Jacob, thank you for the question. There should be 5 necrozombies in the base encounter along with Captain Walker. I have clarified that and uploaded a new version of the PDF.

If you are running this with 7 players (and they're all level 3) then the scaling advice should make the encounter Hard for their level - use the Walker statblock for 2 of the 5 necrozombies. If the group is experienced and you want an extra challenge, consider keeping Walker and all 5 necrozombies, and simply adding two additional undead using the Walker statblock. You could also have additional necrozombies reveal themselves from under the sand to extend the encounter, at your option.

For really large groups like yours, I would suggest using Kobold Fight Club or another encounter builder to help scale/tailor this for your table. All the statblocks are appropriate for the creature CR, and you may need to adjust some other encounters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
