The Black Book

Within these profane pages lay a litany of
character options meant to inspire truly evil
characters.

The Black Book provides the player and DM with
subclasses, backgrounds, trinkets, and feats all
intended for use with evil characters. Some of
these options are clearly for the foulest of souls,
while others are intended to blur the lines of
ethics or "alignment".

The Black Book is intended to provide options
for characters that are "evil" by nature without
being the bloody thirsty monsters that many evil
characters become.

The Black Book was inspired by the dread world of Ravenloft and its ruler for "life", Strahd Von Zarovich. The class options setting neutral, and not specifically for the Curse of Strahd campaign. They simply inspired by the dark, brooding, ethically grey campaign that basically everyone should play.

The primary content of The Black Book are 8 character archetypes aimed at inspiring enjoyable, playable evil alignment characters. Archetypes include

- Primal Path: The Blood Rager
- Cleric Domain: Domination
- Martial Archetype: Crimson Blade
- Monk Tradition: Way of the Black Book
- Ranger Path: Blood Hunter
- Paladin Oath: The Lawbringer
- Rogue Archetype: The Night Child
- Wizard School: Witchcraft
4 Backgrounds

- Afflicted: a poor soul stricken with some malody
- Raised by Evil: a creature raised (though not necessarily born to) a truly evil parent
- Monster Within: a being cursed to carry within it a creature of terrible evil
- Experimental Doctor: an opportunistic scientist
21 Feats

2 full pages of balanced feats for character of questionable ethical practices.

Trinkets

100 trinkets with mysterious, possibly unsrupulous origin.

- General Changes:
  - updated layout to be more reader friendly
  - updated artwork to fit better into the layout
  - fixed several layout errors
- Domination Domain Changes
  - changed the cleric Domination ability to allow better out of combat usage
  - reworded Mindblast to prevent out of combat abuse of ability
- Lawbringer:
  - Decreased Aura of The Shield to +1 AC
- Crimson Blade:
  - Added ability to transfer magical weapon features to Crimson Blade so weapon could be upgraded
- Bloodrager Rework:
  - reworded the bloodrager's exhaustion parameters for clarity
  - Rebalanced Blood Rage to allow for a limited cleave
  - Rebalanced Uncontrollable to improve upon standard Rage abilities. Ability now makes the player immune to all grapple or restrain abilities. Removed charm immunity to prevent overlap with Frenzy
  - Reworded Sanguine Determination to prevent negative bonuses from low Charismat attribute
- What to expect in Version 6:
  - new flavor text and notes
  - updated Night Child
  - Overhaul of Ranger archetype
  - Updates to monk's sight ability

The feat Dread Knowledge mentions a Black Book Spell List, however, no such spell list is in the book. Not sure if this was intentional or an oversight, but I felt I should bring it up.

It was 100% an oversight to leave that in. We are releasing a full version of this in a few weeks which does have the spell list. When we do so, I'll send you a copy of the spell list.

So there is something "interesting" I've noticed bout the Crimson Blade Martial Archetype: It's signature move "Gash" seems to, if I'm reading it right, pretty much adds damage to your character, yet doesn't allow any method to regain said *suffered* narcotic damage via Blood Die or even in any of its later abilities. Pretty much has the Vampire "charm" down in its capstone skill, has the blood aspect of the Vampire down via Blood Die, and yet doesn't have the "healing" effect that would represent the vampire drinking blood. *Granted I can see it feeding on Magical Weapons as that idea when upgrading the Crimson Blade weapon itself. And that it does that because the Blood Hunter class has that heal effect for the damage from its Blood Rite ability*

Because if you decide to add some quick "burst" damage via using multiple Blood Die *and this class seems to grant CRAP TON as your number of Blood Die is equal to your Fighter level* then you must be aware...See more

Does bestial combat grant proficiency in unarmed strikes?

Short answer: yes

Hi, Pergruin. So, when I made this there was still some conversation around needing proficiency with unarmed. Jeremy Crawford has pretty much buttoned that convo up by saying that yes, you need to be proficient to add your bonus. When I made this though, a lot of people felt every character was proficient with unarmed.

Thank you for bringing this question up. I am currently working on an expanded version of this and I'll be sure to change the wording on this feat based on your question.
