What's Past is Prologue is legal for D&D Adventurers League play and part of the Embers of the Last War storyline! Adventure Code: DDAL-ELW00.

Sharn, City of Towers. They reach into the sky like the stone fingers of civilization that they are. They hold secrets and promises, and break the same just as quickly as they make new ones. You’ve got an opportunity to make a little coin by assisting with an expedition for Morgrave University; this should be easy money and not a lot of trouble… right?

This 2-to-4-hour adventure uses six level 0 pregenerated characters and takes place in the world of Eberron during the final days of the Last War. This prologue adventure kicks of the Embers of the Last War storyline. At the end of the adventure, the player characters are retired and become NPCs for the other adventures in the storyline.

It was our first time using an online system for playing D&D, so there's just enough content here to run in a four-hour slot while figuring out how an online system works and talking out character development for the rest of the series. One of the major puzzles (involving how to access something) could have used an alternate solution - I was about to invent one on-the-fly when the characters stumbled a bit. Otherwise - an excellent start to the series.

My advise is to ignore the bit about using the slow progression, as even with a normal progression the characters will start falling behind the curve once they hit Tier 2.

how prominent are the NPCs in fallowup modules? My players want to use the characters they will create for the second and continuing modules for this one also. would it be possible to do that and just tweak the NPCs a bit?

We do need a bundle for this. 5 dollars each adventure is very expensive...

I'd like to add to the prior post - where are the NPCs in the following modules? I've bought and read them all and see barely a peek of them, and no mention of the coolest character at all (the Egret). Seems like they were mostly forgotten..?

**** MINOR SPOILER ****

There is a very brief mention of Grannok Twinpipes and Sharyl Fiennes in the very last module, but none of the others are mentioned in either the ELW adventures or Encounters in Sharn. I'm a little disappointed by that. I suppose you could change some of the names of the NPCs in the adventures or the pregens to match, or introduce them in the place of unnamed NPCs in the adventures.

Are we going to see the pregenerated PCs in the following modules? Where exactly?

Are there any rewards at the end to be applied to your actual character?

The rewards are applied to your ongoing Eberron character (if a new character, look at it like you're starting with some extra toys over those that didn't play this adventure). The characters used here are retired, as they become NPCs for later reference in the storyline.

Is this one necessary to play the rest of the adventures, in order? I prefer to not start at a level zero adventure.

This one is optional - it's an introduction to the world and gives you the chance to explore some of the NPCs in the later adventures.

I've only played so, I can't give an official review. However, it's a nice look into Eberron and a little different due to the level zero characters. It has made me look forward to the rest of the series.

Also, we all saw what you did there. We're just having a little trouble mapping some of the characters.

The pregens have a nice balance of Archetypes. It does the job of teasing the players with a new world to explore. Overall a well written module (my continued frustration of a lack of stat blocks not withstanding). My one grip is that the 2nd bonus objective feels more like a condition that the players must work under.

DMING TIP: The map for the airship in the adventure is also part of the free DM's Guild Eberron Maps art resources, and it's not labelled. Grab that one and use it for a player handout!

I didn't purchase this product so cannot review it. However, it doesn't feel like dnd. The characters are basically just background noise to watch a series of scenes play out. They are fragile so any attempted interference will almost certainly mean death.

I feel like the author just wanted to write a story without any pesky players interfering with it. Which is fine for a book, but crap for a dnd game.

Is there possibly a 7th pregen that is available?

If not, I was thinking of using 2 copies of the gnome (they all have the same name anyway), a level 0 version of "Stab" from Encounters in Sharn, or just adding a Valanar Elf possibly. Any ideas of what would fit best for inclusion later would be appreciated. Thanks

You're welcome to run a second copy of any of the pregens. That said, the adventure very much bogs down with 7 players so be ready to adjust the game as-needed.

Thanks for the response, 7 is a little rough, but its the table I have. If someone needs a 7th though the following is a copy of what I used for a Valanar Elf.

Inheritor Background, 2 dagger, adventuring kit and 1 piece of Gold, the following backstory..,

1st part from Wayfinder's guide, 2nd part created.
1st part..,
Your people are dedicated to the arts of war. Millenia ago, your ancestors fought an epic
war against mighty giants. When they came to Khorvaire, they battled the champions of the goblin empire. The greatest heroes of those struggles live on after death, known as the patron ancestors. When you became an adult, one of the patron ancestors formed a bond with you. Now it is your duty to follow in the footsteps of your patron, living your life as they lived theirs, allowing this champion to live on through you.

2nd part..,
Your patron has told you of a weapon that was stolen from his grave that you must recover, one of the Valenar...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
