Monstrous Races 2

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The sequel to Monstrous Races, Monstrous Races 2 presents player options to play every monster in Volo's Guide to Monsters. Volo's Guide to Monsters includes both new monsters and variations on existing monsters, so Monstrous Races 2 includes new monstrous races and a variety of new options for monstrous races published in the original Monstrous Races.

What is in this document?

  • 49 playable races (every creature in Volo's Guide to Monsters, no exceptions!)
  • 29 subraces
  • 5 templates for player characters
  • Rules for Tiny player characters and races (They're the same as the ones in the original Monstrous Races), plus new rules for Large, Huge, and Gargantuan players!
  • 1 new general feat
  • 22 new racial feats for races in Monstrous Races and in Monstrous Races 2
  • 3 new backgrounds
  • 5 new magic items
  • 4 new spells
  • 3 appendices with suggestions for campaign, character, and party ideas to make use of monstrous races

You do not need the original Monstrous Races to use most of this document, but owning Monstrous Races will make the design notes make a lot more sense.

Thanks to Rob Twohy and his team, Monstrous Races 2 is now available for the Fantasy Grounds Virtual Tabletop!

Hi there, I love this pdf, but I've noticed some missing parts in some of the statblocks - the Flail Snail for instance has a section for ASI, but no actual stat increases stated, as do the Hag subraces. There may be more but those are the ones that jumped out at me.

Big fan of your work, Tyler. You've been the source of some of my favorite player characters thanks to your Monstrous Races additions, and I'm looking forward to MR3. Though with Exploring Eberron and Embers of the Last War out, I can't help but wonder if you've consider making stats for the Quori and all its subraces.

Hey Tyler, I hope all is well. I love your work on Monstrous Races and MR2. I've seen how you're not sure when or if you can get MR3 based on Mordenkainen's Tome out. I just wanted you to know some of us are still holding out hope for the release. Keep up the good work, friend. I hope things are going well for you.

Hey, Tyler! Love your work. I assume you probably get this question a lot, but how has progress been going on Monstrous Races 3? And do you have any plans for other content after it's completion?

Unfortunately, I haven't made a lot of progress on Monstrous Races 3. Mostly because I've got a lot of other stuff going on in my life, and I just haven't been able to put time into it. Most of the time I would normally put into Monstrous Races has gone into RPGBOT.net instead.

I'm hoping that at some point I can get back to Monstrous Races. But the bar for success on DMsGuild has been raised a lot in the time since I published MR2. When I get back to working on Monstrous Races 3, it's going to be a more serious project and I just don't have the capacity for that right now. I know that there are people waiting very patiently, and I hate to disappoint people, but MR3 likely won't happen for a while if at all.

I am absolutely busting my butt on RPGBOT.net to make all of this a full-time job some day, and if I'm fortunate enough that I can make that happen, MR3 will absolutely happen along with a bunch of other stuff that I'd really like to write, and I'm going to try really hard to make...See more

Any advice or suggestions for the Nightwalker? it's a pretty powerful one so I'm not sure how to convert it for a player of mine.

First question to ask: What is it about the Nightwalker that your player wants to replicate? They might be happy playing a Shadow, in which case check the stats in the original Monstrous Races.

An easy trap to fall into is looking at a high-CR monster and asking yourself how you can squish the entire creature into a playable race. Generally you can't because a high-CR monster's grab bag of traits will overflow the BP range. Just the Nightwalker's damage resistances are 10 BP, and that doesn't even include the immunities.

As a quick build:
+1 Str, +1 Con (2 BP)
resistance to poison (including Advantage on saves against the Poisoned condition) and necrotic (4 BP)
Darkvision (2 BP)
Natural weapons that deal 1d4 slashing+1d4 Necrotic (2 BP)

Just a shot in the dark, do you have any intent to do a version for Mordenkainen's tome of foes or Eberron? I've grabbed both of these and really enjoy thumbing through them, and would love for the series to be continued.

Hi Scott. I get that question a lot! Yes, at some point I'm planning to create more versions of Monstrous Races, including one to cover Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. Unfortunately, I don't know when that's going to happen.

I found a Module that doesn't have an Author attached to it, could I be able to get it converted to FG? Would I have to pay someone or is it a community thing?

Could you clarify what you mean by "Module"? Like, an adventure module? Or like a software module?

Rob Twohy works with the Fantasy Grounds team, and he and his team will convert people's DMsGuild content in exchange for a revenue split. If you want to see a conversion of anything on DMsGuild, try contacting the author and point them to Rob Twohy on Twitter. He's been absolutely wonderful to work with.

I found an alternative ruleset document for 5e, but it doesn't have an author's name on it. How does that work? The author didn't sign his/her own work. Its also not on any website, I found it as a PDF, it has 30+ Pages.

You would have to ask Rob about that. Generally it's not a good idea to do anything with someone else's work without their permission because you could be violating someone's copyright. Your best bet is probably to try to figure out who the author is.

Are you going to be making Monstrous Races 3 with the creatures in mordenkainen tome of foes or maybe even other modules/adventures?

I really enjoy your stuff, have used it before and imo it is the best conversions one could do, one of the best books this site and the fanbase have to offer and just really well done

Am looking forward for more, really want to play a Larva mage :v

Yes, I will eventually publish Monstrous Races 3, which will cover Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. Unfortunately, work on MR3 has been really slow, so it's going to be a while before it's completed. In the mean time, I encourage you to use the rules in Monstrous Races 1 to try adapting creatures on your own.

Hey there! Been using both books for a campaign or two as of late, and I have to say that, respectfully, these books are so good I struggle to describe them without slipping into profanity. They're just so well thought out, so well put together, and so satisfying to use that the excitement tends to overwhelm a bit whenever I attempt to describe them! Having recently begun to DM, I have even managed to put together a few oneshots/campaigns based on the contents of these books.
Eagerly awaiting any future content, but remember; No Worries, No Hurry

(Oh! And, prolly meaningless, but I thought that perhaps I should add that I myself have actually since converted a creature or two into races, using this book as a guide)

Aye! Sure, and sorry for the delay!

In a campaign with some coworkers, I made a Gnoll forge cleric named "Grengaal," who talked and dressed a little like an elvis impersonator. He was a beloved member of the party, who specialized in constructing things out of a mix of metal and organic materials, his best work being a facial prosthesis for a friend of his, made from bits of an old iron furnace and a warg's jawbone.

In another campaign with another group, I had a manticore barbarian named "Kull," who has recently begun to look like the biggest softy you've ever seen (on numerous occasions he has attempted to hide from "danger" behind much smaller creatures, and has been known to enjoy the odd tea party). He has recently started to develop a crush on (who else?) the party's bard.

In a campaign I run myself, one of our players is "George George." George George came about when, somehow or another, a Great Old One's power seems...See more

Mechanically, none of these races have yet given me or my players, any trouble at all, thanks to good balancing and clever builds/parties.

As for a favourite? That's hard to say. I love the mechanics behind the regeneration mechanics for trolls and (even more so) hydras, and I'm a big fan of how the shape-shifting creatures were managed. Most all of the races here feel like their powers and abilites have been included in a fashion that's true to the nature of the creatures themselves. I especially like how most shapechangers, like barghests (perhaps my favourite but I'm a bit biased) and jackalweres aren't just given a dispassionate "once-per-long-rest single-form polymorph," but are instead made to feel like their inhumane selves, and that transforming is inherent to their nature.

All in all, just top notch work!

My play group has #1 and we just realized this exists, which is exciting because it means I actually can play an Elder Brain character. And you said you are working on #3 for MTOF, which means I can actually play as a Star Spawn! By one questions is if you are planning on doing other sourcebooks? Like, being able to play as a Nightveil Specter from Guildmasters Guild to Ravnica sounds absolutely amazing...

I would absolutely love to do that, and given enough time I absolutely will. I'm planning to do a bundle of smaller PDFs covering the handful of monsters included in each of the adventures, and I absolutely want to do a Monstrous Races of Ravnica. But MR3 has been slow going and I'm working on some other time-consuming projects (I write RPGBOT.net, for example), so I can't make any guess how long it will take me to get to those.

I'm so happy that you made a sequel for Volo's. The monstrous races pdfs you make are some of my favorites here on the DM's Guild.

Just so you're aware, the entry for Cave Fisher doesn't have any stat increases listed, and Flail Snail doesn't have what the language you know stated.

So I have a question, does this book expand on the Race Builder appendix of the previous volume with more options? I've been working on a lot of homebrew races and having more sorts of abilities analyzed helps a lot, especially as points of reference for weirder traits.

Excellent question!

Yes and no. Monstrous Races 2 does not include any new content for the Race Builder rules presented in the original Monstrous Races. However, the current version of Monstrous Races includes all of the new racial traits I used to build the races for Monstrous Races 2. So if you already own Monstrous Races, go download a fresh copy and you have the latest and greatest version of the Race Builder rules!

I know people have been waiting a long time, and I want to assure everyone who's watching that Monstrous Races 3 will happen eventually. But Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes includes a lot of content, and the monsters are considerably more complex than those in previous sourcebooks, so adapting them is taking much longer. I'm also sidetracked by some other projects (I run RPGBOT.net, and I'm working on a couple adventures).

But since someone asked for a specific race, I'm happy to oblige. If you're not specifically interesting in the Oblex, at the very least take this as an example of why MR3 is taking so long. I was forced to split the racial traits into two posts to get past the DMsGuild character limit, and I didn't even include the design notes. The total Oblex race entry is over 5000 words, and that's just a single race.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
