Monstrous Races 2

The sequel to Monstrous Races, Monstrous Races 2 presents player options to play every monster in Volo's Guide to Monsters. Volo's Guide to Monsters includes both new monsters and variations on existing monsters, so Monstrous Races 2 includes new monstrous races and a variety of new options for monstrous races published in the original Monstrous Races.

What is in this document?

  • 49 playable races (every creature in Volo's Guide to Monsters, no exceptions!)
  • 29 subraces
  • 5 templates for player characters
  • Rules for Tiny player characters and races (They're the same as the ones in the original Monstrous Races), plus new rules for Large, Huge, and Gargantuan players!
  • 1 new general feat
  • 22 new racial feats for races in Monstrous Races and in Monstrous Races 2
  • 3 new backgrounds
  • 5 new magic items
  • 4 new spells
  • 3 appendices with suggestions for campaign, character, and party ideas to make use of monstrous races

You do not need the original Monstrous Races to use most of this document, but owning Monstrous Races will make the design notes make a lot more sense.

The red used for all the headlines is just really visually aggressive. Kind of unpleasant to look at.

Though the Nilbog is not a race, it is a condition only a Goblin can get, as it is a "trickster goblin spirit."
I would just make it a template that can only be used on Goblins.

I discussed that at length in my design notes for the Nilbog in the document. A template was something I considered, but I wanted it to be easily removable, so I ended up with something that's essentially a magic item.

some errors in labeling

Yuan-Ti Abomination [Template: Acquired]
Shapechangers coerced into undergoing a horrifying ritual, deep scions serve their aquatic masters as spies and assassins, venturing onto dry land where their masters cannot.

I really like what you've done here, and admire your talent and effort. you've clearly put alot of time and thought into these and I really love what youve made with this and you're previous monsterous races collection.

Thanks for pointing that out, Nathan. I've just uploaded updated copies of the files with some text corrections.

Reading through the Larger Races Addendum I found a couple of problems with the spell "Resize Magic Item", namely from the effect it's clear that it should be in the Transmutation school and not Enchantment. Transmutation is the most versatile school while Enchantment is all about charming, controlling and manipulating intelligent creatures.

The second problem is with the effect at higher levels. While it might be intentional, the way it is written now the maximum change is two sizes, which means, if you're a gargantuan creature find a medium longsword you're all out of luck. What I suggest as a fix is expanding the range; 2 sizes at 4-5, 3 sizes at 6-7, 4 sizes at 8-9.

I think you're right regarding Trasnmutation vs. Enchantment. I don't recall why I made Resize Magic Item an enchantment, so I went ahead and changed it.

It looks like I forgot the second half of the last sentence of Resize Magic Item. The spell slot behavior you described is exactly how I intended the spell to work for exactly the reason you described.

I've uploaded an updated version of the large players file.

I love your work, but this PDF needs some checking. Some information is missing and can only be found in the Design Notes of the races.

Darn, and I thought I did a better job editing this time. If you can point out any specific errors you find I'm happy to correct them and I'll upload update files once they're corrected.

I've only given it a cursory glance, but I noticed that you must have done a little copy/pasting for the Deep Scion and Yuan-ti Abomination templates ;)

Deep Scion:
"Hit Dice. 1d8 per revenant level"

"Hit Dice. 1d10 per revenant level"
Under traits - "Deep scions gain the following traits at each level, as indicated on the table below."

Yes, I definitely do a bit of copy+paste to make sure that formatting all remains consistent. But it looks like I forgot to change some text.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be sure to correct that text in the next round of updates to the file.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
