D&D Solo Adventure: Menace of the Icy Spire (5e Solo Conversion)

5e Solo Gamebooks presents Menace of the Icy Spire - A 5e Solo Conversion.

This is a conversion of the Fourth Edition adventure Menace of the Icy Spire, which appears in Issue 159 of Dungeon Magazine. This conversion updates the adventure to Fifth Edition, and also changes it from a party adventure to a solo adventure. The quest is set in the Forgotten Realms, with the town of Loudwater serving as the base, although it could be changed to feature any town in the Forgotten Realms.

You will not need a DM to play through this. You will require a copy of Dungeon Magazine 159 (available on DM’s Guild here), but your main reference document will be this pdf. Follow the text and directions in here to experience a true 5e solo adventure. We have also included a few little touches of our own (some shopping and urban encounters) to enhance the experience and make the adventure slightly less linear than the original.

You will be directed to the original text and maps at different points, and all converted stat blocks and encounters will be found within this pdf. As with our other products, links embedded within the pdf will move you between entries and sections.

WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

You will need a copy of Dungeon Magazine issue no. 159. Perhaps you already own a copy of Dungeon 159. Even better. Other than gaining the adventure you will require for this solo conversion, the price is offset by the fact that there are two other excellent 4e adventures (“Ziggurat Beyond Time,” “Lost Mines of Karak”) contained in this issue, either or both of which we may make a solo conversion for in future. If we do get around to that, you will already have the relevant issue and will not need to purchase it for that conversion. If not, you could run these two outstanding adventures for your group, or pass them to your DM to run if you are a player.

You will also need to create 1-2 PCs for this adventure, as detailed below.

CHARACTER CREATION

The original recommendation is for five Level 2 PCs, but for the solo format, we recommend you run it with 2 Level 9-11 adventurers, controlling both, or with a single Level 12 PC. You will gain gold at the beginning of the adventure to spend in Loudwater, where there are merchants and urban encounters to spice things up.

We enjoyed making this conversion immensely, especially after finishing the large solo adventure Citadel of the Raven which was recently completed. Please check out our other solo adventures if you have not already done so.

Planned for release in the near future are two Level 4 solo adventures. A gamebook-style adventure, as yet untitled, and Tables of Doom 2: Crypt of the Deceiver.

Quite a fun little adventure. Interesting enemies and a good story/quest to go on with great theatre of the mind/setting. My one complaint is difficulty: I ran the adventure as a ranged fighter with a friend playing a greataxe barbarian at level 11 and [...]

I played as 2 lvl 10 pcs, arcana cleric & eldritch knight, both highelves. I rolled really well and survived without using more than a minor healing potion- though it was close. This was a lot of fun but i felt like everything in the 4e magazine co [...]

I never played the original 4e Menace of the Icy Spire campaign so I cannot give any thoughts on how well this conversion is in that regard. However, I can say that I had a great time playing this adventure. I chose to play with a friend as 9th level [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
