CCC-ODFC02-02 Palace of the Efreeti

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A young Mulmaster nobleman attempts to revive the Cult of Eternal Flame by seeking out the patronage of a powerful being. His relatives have hired you to stop his plans and bring him home, even if you must chase him across the planes and over the Sea of Fire to do so.

Now updated to Version 2.0, with improved, full-color maps!

A four-hour adventure for 5th - 10th level characters. This adventure contains dangerous planar exploration, social intrigue with otherworldly beings, an intricate puzzle in a lava-filled room (with multiple versions for repeat players), and combat encounters in unique environments that provide the DM with optional tools to challenge even the most capable of parties.

In addition, Palace of the Efreeti makes use of the Tarokka deck from Curse of Strahd in a unique manner. The Tarokka deck is not a required item for the DM; there is a printable alternative found in the appendix for those without access to one.

The adventure is crazy fun to play as well as to DM. I ran it for several groups of players on Fantasy Grounds and wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for making the card puzzle with player-movable pieces. This is one of the best use of FG to make a puzzle that I have ever seen.
You rock!

Help! I need some help to DM the trial by strength and cunning portion of this Adventure on Fantasy Grounds. (Spoiler Alert)

How would I use tarot cards to represent the representatives? Or some other method? I am really stumped... Is there a deck of Tarot card tokens?
I did find a much improved map image for the inverted pyramid

In Story, go to 4.2 - An Appeal to Logic. You can find all the links you need there.

If you look under A. Tarokka Cards, there's a link to Background - An Appeal to Logic. That's the map that the players can use to help solve the puzzle. There's also a link to 4-2 - An Appeal to Logic. That's the encounter that you can use to put the tarokka cards onto the map and combat tracker. The cards are programmed as allied NPCs, so once they're on the map, the players can move them around like characters and use the background to help sort and solve the puzzle.

Now if you look under D. Pillar of Inquiry in the story page, you'll find three links: "An Appeal to Logic - Clues A", "... Clues B", and "... Clues C". Choose one of them and open it. That brings up an image file with all the clues for that version of the puzzle. You can mask the image like a map, and when the players receive a new clue, just unmask that portion of the image and read it.

Thank you Michael, I had looked at the images and the notes but I never thought the cards would be available as an encounter.
I have to say WOW !!! This has to be the most well put together adventure I have ever bought. and it was on sale for less than $5 . I purchased this adventure on Monday morning and read through it and we starting playing on Monday night. We were wrapping up the end of another storyline so we only made it as far as the Azar ship encounter which was perfect since I wasn't prepared to DM the rest of the adventure. We play on Fantasy Grounds from 7-10 every Monday. Our pase is rather slow I think that is the nature of FG. You explanation on how to run this encounter is much appreciated. I was thinking I needed to use an image editor to cut and paste all the clues as individual images...
I would LOVE to be able to use the new map you mentioned, Will the updated be live on DMSGuild?
I found this map online .......... http://tao-dnd.blogspot.com/2016/02/the-reversed-pyramid.html...See more

Thanks for the kind words! I realize now that I can probably put a better description of how to handle the puzzle in the FG module. I'll make sure to do that in the update.

I will hopefully finish with and upload the update by Saturday night. Once it's uploaded, all the changes will be in your DMsGuild library and you can redownload it there. The new maps look really nice, so I would suggest checking that out before spending a lot of effort making a map yourself.

I see that changes were made to reflect season 8 changes, but why keep the XP and gold rewards, along with the renown header?

There were modest changes to make the adventure content work better for season 8 (i.e. gold cost for bribing, making the trinket work). However, this is still a pre-season 8 module, and it would take far too much time to make the cosmetic elements conform with the season 8 format since the new template is so drastically different (in fact, it's not really possible to make this module fit within the 3 episode framework without drastically changing the adventure).

Basically, the old elements that can just be easily ignored are still there (e.g. XP and gold), but anything that had to change to make the adventure run well under S8 rules have been fixed.

Hi Michael, I'm running this next week. Any idea how the crown gets distributed under season 8 rules?
Since its value would add nothing to party rewards, I just want to give it out and say "here, someone take it."

Yeah, season 8 rules really mess with the adventure as it is. I would suggest just treating it as an individual story award without needing to pay for it and maybe reduce the gp costs in part 2.

It went well. The players enjoyed it, especially doing something that was genuinely different.
In part 2, the party volunteered to spend an hour loading the boat rather than pay which made a pretty good compromise. They were really reluctant to spend any gold.

Got to play this adventure this week and the whole group really enjoyed it. Well-written descriptions and well-designed puzzle. Easily near the top of my favourite CCCs now!

Just FYI...the cert is labeled Vault of the Efreeti...not Palace of the Efreeti.

Thanks for commenting Curtis. The cert is not in error. Vault of the Efreeti is the name of the item. The name of the adventure is the line underneath that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
