Gastronome Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Even cooks go on adventures sometimes!

A chef must forge their culinary path, discovering new cuisine and techniques along with finding rare ingredients. Most importantly, practice makes perfect, and what better test subjects than your friends around a campfire.

The Gastronome is a complete class for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. The class was inspired by notable chef celebrities, with subclasses that resemble their real-life counterparts. The Gastronome integrates unique flavors that possess potent benefits when eaten. By harnessing this knowledge, the Gastronome can impart these boons to allies both in battle and after a long day of adventuring.

Inside You Will Find:

  • Gastronome class description
  • Three unique Culinary Paths
    • Brigade Chef: A chef that specializes in enduring long days of being in the kitchen and indomitable courage.
    • Culinary Maestro: A chef that leads their kitchen staff (and adventuring party) while possessing a sharp tongue to dish out the harshest of criticisms.
    • Revolutionist: A rebel chef that masters the ability to incorporate hidden flavors and being able to change their prepared flavors when necessary.
  • Rules for Culinary Duels! Inspired by competitive cooking shows such as Iron Chef, Top Chef, and Chopped. Now you can take your Gastronomes on a chef vs. chef battle to determine whose cuisine reigns supreme.
Special Thanks to Chef Mike Haracz for collaborating for the inspiration for this class.

This project is dedicated to the late Anthony Bourdain, who passed away during the development of this class. He was an inspiration for me as a culinary nerd, world explorer, and writer. He will be deeply missed.

Hello! I'm loving the class and can't wait to actually use it in a game! I wanna ask though, it says in the meal service that I can feed a number of creatures equal to 1 + your Constitution modifier (minimum of one creature). Does that count for each seperate meal? I might be missreading this so I appologize but I got a lil confused ^^"

also the Hors-d'oeuvres, is it that I can create a number equal to my CON modifier and those can be of the kinds I have learned, or that I make that many of each?

I feel like, under the meal service effect, it should probably say "Each creature you feed is provided with 1 day's worth of water and nourishment", or words to that effect!

Being able to cast a minute of "Haste" on a handful of people at a time sounds like a DM's nightmare, lol. Not 100% sure if that particular meal flavor is a little OP. What were your thoughts when choosing spells that could be imparted through flavors? I'm considering fiddling with them a little for thematic reasons, but I'm curious :)

It might still be a little OP. It was one that gave me pause when I originally wrote it. I rationalized that the earliest a Gastronome could acquire this powerful flavor was at 11th level, which would still require spending actions to feed adjacent allies, compared to the spell having a range of 30 feet. I also rationalized the idea with a Sorcerer casting the Haste spell with the Twinned Spell metamagic. Granted, haste as a spell required concentration while the flavors did not, so there was always the chance to lose the benefits. It's worth a look again.

As for my thoughts when it came to choosing spells that could be imparted through flavors: Since the class was mechanically driven to provide effects and buffs (at greater precedence than even classes like the Bard), I spent time looking at spells that would first qualify as a buff. Using the spell's level to determine the minimum level of entry for a spellcaster, and then I treated the Gastronome as a caster with a similar progression as the arcane...See more

I'd maybe consider having it cast a modified Expeditious Retreat instead? It's normally a 1st level self-targeting spell, but being able to do this for multiple people might be fun?

"When you cast this spell, and then as a bonus action on each of your turns until the spell ends, you can take the Dash action"

Got a little turned around with hors d'oeuvre rules. What is the time increments for making your allotment (1 + CON) of hors d'oeuvre? It says you are limited, but doesn't express if it's limited per long rest, or limited by the amount of ingredients you can store in your pack and have to go shopping, etc.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for reaching out, and yes I can see the concern here, it would seem there was a line or two missing for the allotted hors-d'oeuvres and changing them out. I will note this in an upcoming update for the class, but it should include a line that states: "You can change which hors-d'oeuvres you have prepared in your pack after acquiring new ingredients and completing a long rest." Mechanically, it can be changed after finishing a long rest, but for flavor and roleplay, you can include the element of shopping for the Gastronome too. I hope that helps, and thank you immensely for the feedback!

thank you so much for getting back to me! That helps me a lot! I'm planning on reflavoring (heh) this as a Mixologist for an upcoming streaming game I'm playing, with hors-d'oeuvres being "shots" and meals services becoming "cocktail hours". I can't wait, and will absolutely sing this homebrews praises!

(sorry for too many comments :P) there's also a incomplete sentence on page 8:

"Aromatics
Starting at 10th level, your food becomes tantalizing and
you master."

Noted! Thank you! It should be read as: "Starting at 10th level, your food becomes tantalizing and you master the ability to endow the powers of flavor from your dishes to allies who smell your wonderful cooking."

- Somehow this was in the original draft document but did not get transferred over to the PDF. Odd. I'll have to see what happened with that.

fun concept! am a bit curious about some rules though

for meal services are they cooked at the start of the day and stored like prepping spells or they cooked on the spot?
and if its the former would their be a limitation to how much chow a person can eat in a day?

A little bit of both, but for mechanical purposes, it's assumed that you have the equivalent of MREs, but you can also have precooked ingredients to assemble quickly to make a decent meal from them. For subclasses such as the Revolutionist, where they can replace Flavors, it's similar to the idea that the Gastronome had the extra ingredients available to alter the meal accordingly. There's no limitation how much food a person can eat in a day (unless your DM wants to impose such a restriction), but the effects from Flavors do not stack.

Hope that answers your question!

indeed it does!

and it also tangentially clears up somthing else cause I thought each individual "meal plan" had its own 1+con mod but its that across all possible meals which makes much more sense

Quick clarification: I'm reading this as, rather than you MUST serve 1+CON number of people in one sitting during a meal service, you have 1+CON SERVINGS of that meal service? Like, you can spread out those meals over the course of a day, serving someone 1+CON times rather than having to feed them all at once?

is that an accurate reading?

You have 1+Con servings of meal service. I'll make a note of it. And yes, it means that you can spread out the meals over the course of the day.

This is fun! Also thank you for the dedication to Anthony Bourdain, that's a wonderful touch.
I'm now playing with the idea of a one shot of all Gastronomes. :)

Aww, thank you! It was a lot of fun to make. I have a lot of Anthony Bourdain's books & was a devoted fan since his first televised appearance, his passing hurt me deeply. I'm also going to be hosting a Gastronome inspired one-shot for some of my friends soon too! I hope you enjoy it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
