The Call of Atropus

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This adventure requires Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes

Celahir, a hulking Uthgardt barbarian, found himself far from home, but an odd comfort came in the heat of battle. “What in the Nine Hells are these things?” Phin, the gnomish trickster, shouted. “Don’t much care, gnome. They die well enough.” The barbarian’s bearded axe made a wet sucking sound as he pulled it from the slug-like alien. Their companion, the wizard Reeves, sat along the observatory’s wall, oblivious of the waning battle. “It’s impossible. We saw her die. She can’t be here, no.”

Phin’s eyes darted about the room they had retreated into. “Where... Celahir! Where are Scales and the damned priest? Garl save us, this operation is going belly-up. Why are we even here? What’s wrong with Reeves? What ARE these things?”

As the barbarian, covered in his own blood and the black ichor that ran through the aberrations they battled, was about to answer, an apparition and thick black smoke pulled itself through the stone wall. Unearthly whispers babbling about “Ao’s folly” and “the First Sphere” filled the dark, forgotten laboratory. The heroes prepared themselves, looking into the face of madness.

A maddening adventure for characters levels 5-7

As an ominous comet passes over Toril, a young researcher from Candlekeep goes missing. In darker corners of the Realms, eldritch horrors stir, answering the call of a dead god. Will the heroes be able to save the scholar before they succumb to an Elder Evil from beyond the reaches of sanity?

About the Author: My first memory of Dungeons & Dragons is picking up my brother's 2nd edition Monstrous Manual and looking at the pictures before I could read. I have been playing roleplaying games for nearly 15 years and am eager to share my adventures with you.

My DMing style seeks to provide real (often deadly) challenges for players. I feel this makes an adventure truly rewarding and leaves your players feeling like heroes. If we, as DMs, can achieve that then we have "won" Dungeons & Dragons. This adventure is hard. Your players will be challenged. At the end of the day, they will remember what horrors lurk in the beyond.

Same question as was asked on 9/18/21 - will you be providing maps that are VTT ready? Even a file that did not have the numbers would be helpful.

Hi Sean,

I do not have permission to materially alter the maps I licensed for this adventure, and resizing, grid alignment, etc. can be tricky depending on your target VTT.

I noticed you mentioned providing VTT Ready Maps a couple of years back. Are there still plans for these? The zip file still only contains the numbered black and white maps.

Does this module involve the Elder Evil, Atropus?

It does. Atropus is a an overarching theme in the one-shot. As it is meant for characters levels 5 to 7, you do not go toe-to-toe with Atropus.

Really great module. Clear text, good maps, great atmosphere. Players and i ran it last night. We all had a lot of fun.

One small quest, why does the Valathurial have those 1/day at will spells? I just assumed that it was part of MToF. One of the players question Valathurial having too many spells. I just said that it is in MToF, and that NPCs aren't bound by player rules. But i went to check it this morning and couldn't find it.

Hey Jacob! Thank you so much for your support and kind words. I am happy to hear your table had fun with this.

Regarding the NPC, she is meant to be a warlock and those "Innate Spellcasting" spells represent eldritch invocations and mystic arcana from that class. If you have Volo's Guide to Monsters, check out the various warlock NPCs in that book - they are presented similarly.

I'm getting ready to run this over the weekend and I noticed a couple small errors: in room 5, it says the hole in the ceiling leads to room 11 (which is on the opposite side; it should be room 10) and in room 6, it says the hole leads to room 12 (which has no hole; it should be room 11). I'm excited to see how my players handle this dungeon!

Planning to run this next Tuesday! Any suggested party size? I was going to go with 5 or 6 at level 7 (mandatory multi-classing for a fun challenge). Are their suggestions within for adjusting to larger party sizes or should I just use standard CR calculators like Kobold Fight club to maintain the difficulty?

Hey Thomas! Thanks so much for taking an interest in my work - it means a lot!

The adventure was written for 4-5 level 6 characters and has scaling options for levels 5 and 7. If you went with 6 level 7s, I would suggestion a 25-50% hit point for all enemy creatures. Obviously, you know your players best. If they are a party full of social butterflies who have not overly invested in combat, it should still be challenging to run as-is.

Be sure to refer to the Tactics sections of each combat encounter for suggestions on how to make a challenging, memorable encounter.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

Hello, Lisa! Thanks for taking an interest in my adventure.

There are a few secret rooms and ways to skip past entire sections of the map if the PCs are clever. Through my playtesting, the average time to complete was 4.5 hours.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
