Yearning to Breathe Free is a Dungeons and Dragons campaign for characters of levels 5-15.

When a prominent Waterdhavian Noble is murdered in what appears to be a ritual designed to empower the Order of the Hellfire Hearth, things grow bleak for the tieflings of Faerûn. In response to the murder, the Lords of Waterdeep begin rounding up and jailing tieflings with no cause. The Order of the Hellfire Hearth does not take the accusation of murder lightly, nor do they respond well to the summary imprisonment and demonization of their tiefling brothers and sisters. This climate of intolerance, bigotry and fear spreads outward through the Sword Coast, for as it is often said, “as goes Waterdeep, so goes the North.”

As heroes of the Sword Coast, it is up to the players to discover the truth about the murder, bring the parties responsible to justice, and if possible, relieve tensions across the Sword Coast before the fragile peace between various factions of the North is irreparably damaged.

Copying our review:
Thanks so much for a wonderful module! We played through it as a sidequest to Tyranny of Dragons. It's a wonderfully written adventure full of complex characters and even more complex situations. We were frustrated (in a good way!) by not having a straightforward, stab-the-bad-guy problem with the initial Inquisition, delighted by the tieflings' bravery when we started a civil rights movement (and derailed a chunk of the campaign!), nearly cried when we freed Weary and Torment, and overall had a great time.

Thank you!

I would say the items in this book could be added at any point in the Dragon Heist campaign. You could even use Dragon Heist as a simple lead in to this campaign.

That's possible. There are no tieflings in the group, but the warlock's mentor is a tielfing, whose adventuring group is out of the city at the moment. She could easily be a member of the Order of the Hellfire Hearth.

That could work. The story does not require anyone in the party to be tieflings necessarily either. There are several other ways to lead them into the events in the campaign.

Just wrapping up Dragon Heist with my group and this story will PERFECTLY come in with the themes of bigotry and fear they have already touched on. Very excited to start. I am a little confused on the transition to Chapter 2, what sets them on the road to Triboar?

Triboar is there if they manage to track the persons of interest there. Magic (including seeking the aid of one of the factions presented in the story) can help with the investigation. It is also entirely possible that the PCs never truly solve the murder. If they can prove the innocence of the accused faction, that should be good enough. There is not so much of a "succeed/fail" state as there are a variety of possibilities to be tied together as you see fit.

If that is not straightforward enough of an approach, information and NPCs can be integrated easily.
As to how the characters might conduct a search, there are a number of folks they could question, (Aside from Chapter One, the p.33 sidebar hints at a couple places where information could be found.) Magic is also a possibility (scrying, clairvoyance, there are a number of effects that could prove useful here) Campaigns using Waterdeep Dragon Heist could also lean on Vincent Trench to discover a few leads, should the PCs not have...See more

Are there any hooks in this campaign if one of the party members is a tiefling? Is it covered what may happen to a tiefling adventurer? Or it is best if you don't have a tiefling in your party?

CREATOR
Every step of the way, the potential for tiefling party members is addressed. They would be well served to learn some magics or other means that would allow them to disguise themselves in certain aspects, and having a tiefling in the party will definitely flavor their experience in a certain way. Honestly, I would recommend it though to convey the full impact of the storyline. Please do have a discussion beforehand about some of the themes and issues that player might face, with the whole table though to ensure player comfort. The things that happen to tieflings in this adventure are not pretty.

I'm having real trouble working out how one thing is supposed to lead to another in this adventure. Perhaps i'm blind, but could anyone give me a hint as to what the PC's are supposed to follow from the murder investigation towards? Reading ahead, i know whose supposed to have done it, but even if the pc's work that out somehow i'm struggling to work out how they'll encounter half the stuff in the module

A lot of that is going to fall on the PCs to pursue. It's very much an open sandbox with a number of events happening within it. As a creator, I missed an opportunity to make a more straightforward path.I may look to creating some supplemental material for that, diving into things like investigation checks, NPCs, scrolls, spells, and encounters centered specifically around solving the murder. I truly appreciate the feedback (and you are not the first to have given it) and it's something I am definitely working to avoid in my current and future work. Sometimes a straight line is good to include.

I would echo Calum's thoughts and maybe it is due to my inexperience as well. I have trouble following how to connect all the dots. I feel a overview at the beginning outlining the conspiracy and how the different encounters connect and/or a flow chart of sorts that outlines the clues that leads the players to the location.

I'm very pleased with this campaign. It's obvious a ton of thought and effort went into creating this. If you are on the fence, I recommend. Worth every penny.

The maps and artwork in this title are very nice hand-drawn pieces. Oh, and thanks for getting Rob Twohy to make a Fantasy Grounds version as well. I plan on buying that too.

Hi Travis,

Love the general set up. I am a bit lost though at one key point: where can I find an explanation behind the motivations of Quarion Falone and Ostever that explains what they did?
Edit: just found it at page 61.

I am also a bit at a loss what the characters can find to know they have to search for those (or even find the killers where they are). Or is all of that up to the dm? I find little in terms of clues left behind that might help the characters get on the right track.

Hello! Thank you so much for your comments! The explanations of Quarion and Ostever are covered on Pages 60-62. This also gives a basic overview of what they did, but there is also the sidebar on p.33 that explains some details of the events.

As to how the characters might conduct a search, there are a number of folks they could question, (Aside from Chapter One, the p.33 sidebar hints at a couple places where information could be found.) Magic is also a possibility (scrying clairvoyance, there are a number of effects that could prove useful here) Campaigns using Waterdeep Dragon Heist could also lean on Vincent Trench to discover a few leads, should the PCs not have access to sufficient magics. Ultimately, it is left to the DM to decide what the best way to move the group from a to b is, but hopefully those few nuggets could be of use.

Hi Travis!

I've read through Chapter 1 and I'm really excited to try out a campaign like this!

My main question right now is how should one decide what level to start the party as? I understand that combat isn't a big aspect of the campaign, but I feel like 5-15 is a huge range that doesn't have guidelines for a DM to decide where in that range to drop the players in.

Any thoughts?

Travis L July 14, 2018 6:12 pm UTC
CREATOR
I would recommend a session zero where you discuss some ideas about the pacing the characters have in mind as well as their expectations. The 5-15 range is meant to represent, most directly, the fact that any characters trying to solve the problems by stabbing their way through the opposition are going to die a quick and horrid death if they are operating on the low end of the spectrum.

Personally, I say start them out at 5 with the events of Chapter 1. If they go through the side quests (and a few random encounters/other material you plug in) they will likely be 7-8 by the time the whole chapter is buttoned up.

As an alternative, you could have them start level 3 and play through the companion/prequel/earlier adventure Cottage on the Long Road, which is available at http://www.dmsguild.com/product/172185/Cottage-on-the-Long-Road and gives them a relationship with one of the NPCs/locations that shows back up in Yearning to Breathe Free.

If they prefer to solve problems...See more

If I might ask, about how long would it take to run through this campaign?
Reply
Customer avatar
Travis L July 09, 2018 3:09 am UTC
CREATOR
It's a bit of a sandbox in the middle. If you ignore side quests and beeline straight for the main objective, you can probably knock the whole thing out in 4-5 sessions of 4 hours each.

If you want to explore the campaign, tie it in with existing material, explore the side quests (and other suggested adventures) or just go for a slow burn, the sky is kind of the limit. It's designed to take as long as you want it to take, with few ticking clocks tied to hard deadlines. The longer the main plot goes unresolved, the worse the world gets, but in a political rather than apocalyptic way.

The story doesn't tell the whole story. The lords of Waterdeep are the ones who are actually responsible. The murder was a false flag causus belli to justify the lords of Waterdeep ramping up their tyrannical police state. They set up Hellfire Hearth as a controlled opposition concentration camp to segregate tieflings and make them easier to control when possible and sheep-dip when necessary, divide and conquer.

That is certainly a valid perspective, an easy element to integrate into the campaign, and an interesting takeaway from the story. Fitting given the inspiration for this campaign.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
