Welcome to the Border Kingdoms

According to the sage Meriadas of Westgate: “The Border Kingdoms are the most favored destination for adventurers who want to proudly and boldly conquer a realm or establish their own new kingdom. Lords, counts, dukes, kings and emperors rise, proclaim themselves, and are swept away with the speed and regularity of waves crashing upon a shore.”

A legendary “frontier” corner of the Forgotten Realms, the Border Kingdoms are where adventurers come to carve out their own kingdom, flee retribution, hide treasure — or find someone else's treasure.

It is a hodgepodge of tiny realms ruled by kings, grand viziers, imperial overdukes, and all manner of cabals, councils, and self-titled nobles. It's full of ruins, folk who want to stay hidden, long-slumbering secrets, and adventures waiting to happen.

The Border Kingdoms is a valuable resource for Dungeon Masters and players alike. In addition to describing the people and places of the Border Kingdoms, this book contains enough adventure hooks and lore to keep adventuring parties busy for years.

The Border Kingdoms includes:

  • Over 100 pages of lore about the Border Kingdoms
  • A beautiful new map of the Border Kingdoms by Mike Schley
  • 11 new and fully Adventures League legal character backgrounds
  • Dozens of brand new illustrations
  • Brand new campaign hooks
The Lawless Below illustration by Adrian Landeros

The Border Kingdoms is an officially-approved Wizards of the Coast release, meaning that its content is Adventurers League legal and all the lore contained in the book is official Forgotten Realms canon!

Anyone else have issues using the PDF on the iOS Acrobat app? I have the file on both my iPhone and iPad and the pages on the PDF take an excruciatingly long time to load. It's the only file that I've ever had this issue with. I don't any any similar issues with the file on my laptop.

I absolutely loved this book. It provides a lot of interesting areas, and I am incredibly excited to run an adventure here. I think, if you are a fan of the Realms, this is a great purchase. Although, there are numerous editing mistakes which would be nice if they were corrected.

My one critique is the Border Kingdoms often seem so insular and in fact they are surrounded by things going on. I suggest adding small bits about the surrounding areas such as the Straits of Suldophor and that island in the middle, as well as the Lake of Steam itself and perhaps the Arnrock (see Empires of the Shining Sea), the Firesteap Mountains (Shining South), a bit more about the Shaarwall/Landrise since there are two Landrises it gets confusing. This would probably add a page or so of additional material.

But that is my only critique. It's great to finally see all the Border Kingdom material (from Polyhedron, the WOTC website, and Power of Faerun) in one place with some updating. the new map is great as is the additional material.

Is this a good Utility book/campaign setting to use for campaign I plan to run that has an original Pantheon and Creation lore?

Yes. Nothing in this book changed any of that.

I noticed a small error. On page 11 (pdf) there is the description of the Barony of Blacksaddle and that the town of Telcharn is one of the corners. Looking on the map (pdf) it is Telchard, a "D" instead of an "N".

Like I said minor error.

Are there copies of the hardcopy in stock, or would I need to wait for printing and shipping (which is most likely delayed due to C19), or if I order on now would it be shipped immediately?

It's printed on demand, so they don’t keep any books in stock—but printing and shipping isn't delayed as far as I'm aware. It may be slower than usual, but I just received a proof of a DMs Guild title I worked on the other week in under two weeks, so they're definitely shipping books.

This looks really good. I would love to see a Fantasy Grounds conversion of it. Especially in these times of remote playing!

To the Moderator. How much would it cost to post to Australia for the PDF + Softcover, Premium Color Book?

Looks great.

There is a 32 page preview. It works for me, so...?

As the product listing says, it’s 129 pages. (127 interior pages plus the front and back covers.)

So is this the updated version that is/was going to be expanded by Greenwood and the other guy whose name I can't remember? Since the original release was in 2018?

Yes, this is the expanded and revised second edition. It’s the same listing, because people who purchased the first edition can get the second edition PDF free.

Are there any plans for a virtual tabletop version? Hopefully fantasy grounds, specifically?

Page 10: there's art of a scaled humanoid (looks like a kobold?) with what appears to be a rifle. Does this have anything to do with any content in the book? There's nothing related in the text on the surrounding page, and a quick CTRL-F shows no hits for "kobold," "gun," "smokepowder," or "firearm."

Is anyone else having trouble with the pdf? I'm on an iPad, all current with updates, and the book refuses to load in the newest version of Adobe Reader's app.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
