The Magistrate

For all the rules lawyers out there, this is the class for you.

I looked around for a legal themed class but was not satisfied with anything else out there.  The Magistrate is a judge, and his features come from translating real legal terminology into 5th edition game mechanics.  Included are three subclasses: Criminal Law, Property Law, and Equity architypes.

The question I have for anyone playtesting this class is whether Judicial Immunity is too powerful.  I've tried to balance it, but if neccessary it could be replaced with something closer to the barbarian's resistance and could be called qualified immunity instead.

I didn’t know that magistrates were a part of DnD until Waterdeep: Dragon Heist came out! All the better that it has a place in the multiverse. I'm playtesting this class in that module right now.

Enjoy!

This seems like a fun class to try out, but I believe there's a few things that could be improved.

Minor spelling mistakes, for example; the document repeats "architype", though it should be "archetype".

Also, I think it might be better to not call them "archetypes" directly. Most classes give a special name to subclasses (i.e Rangers have "Conclaves", Clerics have "Domains", Paladins have "Oaths", etc). Perhaps a Magistrate could have "Jurisdictions".

Like the look of the class, did have a suggestion balance wise. I think the Writ of Scrie Facias could do with the added condition of personal service (melee spell attack) or a save by the target to negate or reduce the damage taken from not answering or lying.
Or you could add the condition that the target must be grappled or restrained for the writ to take affect. Possibly must remain grappled or restrained for the duration of the questioning. That could be interesting and fit with the question theme of the writ. Just my thoughts on it.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking that this Writ could use some fine tuning. There is some overlap to this Writ with Zone of Truth. To be interesting and worthwhile, it will need to offer something more powerful than ZOT, but there must be some cost to balance it. I like the idea of using the grappled condition as a limiting factor. Some changes to this Writ will definitely go into the next update.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
