The Slumbering Shadow

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The first ever full-length campaign set in Elturgard by two best-selling authors!

This massive adventure will take your players all the way through Tier 2! Clocking in at 116 pages of solid adventure, Slumbering Shadow is a big, fat journey to Elturgard where an ancient yuan-ti god has returned from the Abyss.

Hessatali! Hessatali!

The yuan-ti anathema, Hessatali, calls out to his yuan-ti faithful from his prison in the Abyss. His network of vipers has uncovered the ruins of ancient Ss’tatha’lass and the Fane of Hessatali, a fountain of pure venom that will return the demi-god to life. Above the buried ruins of Ss’tatha’lass, yuan-ti agents have moved to control the politics of Scornubel.

The characters fall into a complex yuan-ti plot that spans the breadth of the realm, pits the heroes against the forces of the Abyss, and explores the culture of the yuan-ti.

Straight-Forward Adventure Design

Slumbering Shadow is easy for novice Dungeon Masters and players; this means it has a straight-forward design. Each section can be played in a single 4-hour session; the entire campaign should take about 15 sessions to complete.

There is plenty of room for your players to explore the living, breathing realm of Elturgard but the story is concise and keeps your group focused and on track.

  • Tactics! Each combat includes tactics to help new and experienced DMs alike throw tough, memorable challenges at their players.
  • Scaled Encounters! Easily scale the encounters to meet your group's skill set, experience and play style.
  • New Monsters! New monsters from the ancient eons of D&D make an appearance.

So Tough, Tempus Rage-Quit

Look, let's get real: we've made tough, but entirely fair, encounters. Combats, traps and social interactions will push your players to their limits, even if they've been playing since the heady days of First Edition.

Large and In-Charge

This adventure is HUGE. It is larger than Tomb of Annihilation and will take about 60 hours to finish, or about 15-20 sessions. We've playtested, refined and timed all of the major encounters. Know what you're getting into before you buy this beast of a campaign!
Despite the enormous size of this adventure, there is plenty of room for you to make Elturgard your own, all while keeping your players on track.

What is the expected starting level for players. And what level will they be at the conclusion?

Hi Robert, another question if I may, the Fang of Jazirian - "The Fang has the power to destroy Merrshaulk and plays an important role in this story." and "The Fang is their only option for fighting the newly awoken Hessatali"
I am unclear (though I may have missed something) what damage or effect it has on Hessatali - beyond the normal propertied of the fang?
Doe is have some additional impact on Hessatali that makes it possible to slay him?

a couple more questions
On page 59 when first facing Hessatali "Suddenly, the Fane of Hessatali explodes" - I was wondering why it exploded - I could see no information on this.

Also on page 83 in the E4. Fane of Hessatali (BOSS) section there seems to be a missing section - it simply says:
Tactics
Hessatali tactics needed
It looks like the section has not been written yet?

Yikes on the explosion! APparently that dramatic moment was somehow edited out. The ritual to bring Hessatali back wasn't totally correct and it caused an arcane disruption that shatters the Fane shortly after the monster comes tearing out of it. This prevents the yuan-ti from using the Fane again to just bring Hessatali back after the climax of the adventure. If I were a better writer, I would make the destruction of the Fane an entire adventure unto itself, giving the character's more agency to shape the story. But I was going for the quick win here and an arcane malfunction seemed good enough.

Tactics were not included, I am going to make a new version of the doc and upload it. Message me privately and I will send you the tactics ASAP. Don't want to post them here!

Thank you for catching this. I'm so sorry about the typo. We condensed the appendixes, and what was 'E' became 'C' - however, we also removed the Chest of Dispater as an actual magical item (with stats). We thought it was too much to include an honest-to-god artifact in the adventure. The core mechanic of the chest was: it can only be attuned to by an evil creature, each day at sunset it creates 1d100 golden coins which the creature can keep or give away. The chest can never have more than 100 golden coins in it. The coins are themselves powerful magical items. If a coin is given away, the creature that takes it must make Wisdom saving throws each day or have their alignment shift toward evil. Anyone can use their action to activate the coin's power, which summons a Horned Devil for 1 hour that obeys the owner without question. This power can be used again at the next sunset. The creature attuned to the chest itself (we'll call that creature the chest's master) cannot use the coins in this way but as long as at...See more

There's been a terrible error here, and we left out the stats for a major NPC - Havlor. I have already flogged myself, but if you have this adventure and are looking for Havlor's stats, they are public on DnDBeyond or you can message me on Facebook. Working to fix it in the published material asap.

Error has been updated and I took the opportunity to remove all artwork from the module. Now it should print faster and easier.

Hi, a question please, does the campaign contain maps?
Reply

Christopher W June 12, 2018 1:39 pm UTC
There are hand-drawn maps for each major encounter location (dungeons and other set pieces). There are not maps for minor or random encounters, but each of these are presented with enough environmental information to pull together a map.

Thank you for your interest in our campaign!

Page 2: "Running the Adventure" paragraph 3. Is missing the word "in". Should read "...for this adventure appear *in the appendixes."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
