More thoughts, now that my players have completed the Rotted Heart

SPOILER WARNING

The "features" section refers to "Doors", but there is only one of them. :)

Is the bloody muck difficult terrain? It's "shin-high" so I assumed "yes" but it really restricts everyone's movements. Now I understand why the skull lord wants to cast haste as the first action!

The undead regeneration in the bloody much is missing all of the usual restrictions such as being prevented by radiant or fire damage that turn, or if the creature is below 0hp. As read, the creatures are immortal until their bodies are physically removed from the muck. This presented a very interesting challenge (one was swallowed and digested by a summons giant toad!) but it's also super powerful. Especially when combined with the skull lord regeneration of nearby undead.

My players suggested that the undead regeneration happen at the end of their turn,...See more

I have some more thoughts about the adventure, having now run the Village of Broken Dreams.

SPOILER WARNING

Village:
- what do regular residents of the Village say when players ask where Markella is? It's not referenced that I can see. I had them have muddled memories here they didn’t realize what they’d forgotten: “good question, and I’m sure I know the answer, but I just can’t bring it to mind right now” “I feel like I should know, but I guess I don’t”.
- There is no “failure” option to the encounters. If they can’t figure out how to rouse the Lost, then what next? Is there any other option?
- It's very hard to judge whether the players played to their traits or not as the players thinking might not match what you’re expecting. In the end, I asked each of them to explain their thinking and how it related to their traits, and it was surprising the rationalizations they used.
- If players negotiate and go against their values in...See more

How have people played the loss of traits / return to the material plane?

Has it been handwaved and everyone gets their memories / traits etc. back when they return or did you make it permanent?

How did you guys return to the Material Plane without an appropriate spellcaster in the party?

The trait loss is permanent - their memories are left with the Raven Queen. I'm using this as an opportunity for a player to give up a quest for revenge that consumes him - we'll see if he's interested.

This is definitely a gap in the story with regards to getting home. It's also not super clear where the ability to get them there comes from either. I think it's easy enough to say that when the Queen gets what she wants, she sends them back, as she's done with them.

Does anyone know how long each part is. I am running this for some people online and I need to know so I can see how many sessions it is.

I've just started running this and wanted to share some thoughts. Lots of spoilers.

Dripping Leaves:
- the Raven Queen steals memories, not bodies, as per MTOF. To address this, the Starsinger could be left as an empty husk of a body, and at the end the Raven Queen gives them a touchstone to bring her back.
- if they follow the drow/shadar-kai path from the village, presumably they diverge at some point and the shadar-kai trail suddenly disappears when they plane shift back to the Shadowfell. Though if they can plane shift, why do they leave the village to do so - easier to just leave from the temple with no trail at all.
- how far is it from Dripping Leaves to the drow outpost?

Drow Outpost:
- why are the drow stepping up their attacks on Dripping Leaves recently? No explanation is given.
- it would really, really help to have the furniture in each room on the map
- it's supposed to be an earthen cave, but has very straight walls and what appear...See more

In the text about Bloody Muck on p. 22, it says:
"The muck is infused with necromantic energy, any creature in contact with it that casts a spell that causes a target to regain hit points must succeed on a spellcasting ability check with a DC equal to 10 plus the level of the spell. Conversely, ..."
The implication is that something bad happens if the spellcasting ability check fails, but it doesn't say what happens. Does the target lose the hit points? Does the caster? I will make something up, but am curious about the intention.

Not one of the authors, and you've probably long since figured this out, but for anyone else who might be looking, I believe the check is to successfully cast the spell. So if you fail the check, the spell fails.

I'm using this as a side quest for Dungeon of the Mad Mage. One of the characters picked up the sentient sword Tearulai and is on a quest to return it to Cormanthyr Forest. Perfect for this module! Thanks!

Hello Matt, a while back I made a custom map pack for the Rotted Heart Section. It is clearly labeled and already set up for VTs. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/247276/The-Rotted-Heart-Map-Pack and currently on sale!

full disclosure, if you're going to have maps... and maps that cant be downloaded and used at that... dear god please label them so we can draw them out and know what/where to place things. The organization was utterly disastrous. I have no clue where to put anything in the "rotted heart".

I'll second that. The outpost map was fine but the other two aren't particularly useful without a key of some sort. Rooms need numbers for the DM.
I don't particularly want to pay for the full color maps as an add on from Nathan L since the regular maps in the module should include numbers.
Please update the adventure with numbered maps.

I think they were asking the module creator(s), for the purposes of including the FG module/its contents as part of this product.

So I just ran the last section of this, adjusted to “very weak”, for two ninth level characters. The skull lord was way too much for them, particularly his legendary actions and resistances. Should those features have also been scaled back by the curse of the Visage?

I am about to start this adventure. It looks very exciting, especially the alternate planes content. But I cannot figure out where on the Faerûn map the elven village would be located. I’ve found Shadowdale and the River Ashaba but I can’t find the Misty Trail nor Elven Crossing. Can you point me to a map that has all four locations or any source to help me out? Thanks.

Due to the popularity of my map for the Rotting Heart and many people requesting The outpost be done as well I have created it. You can check out a full-color map package of the dungeon from this adventure, "The Outpost" here: http://www.dmsguild.com/product/248788/The-Outpost-Map-Package

If you missed the first one you can also find the maps for the Rotted Heart here: http://www.dmsguild.com/product/247276/The-Rotted-Heart-Map-Package

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
