Death in the Dark - A Tome of Foes Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Evil Thrives in Darkness

A shadow hangs over the dark and dreary town of Squill. Townsfolk are being murdered in their beds without any explaination and the local graveyard has become a dangerous, haunted place.

Consumed by fear, townsfolk have begun casting evil glances at a poor orphan boy linked to all the victims.

A local priestess, however, wonders if there is more at stake than it first seems…

This short adventure can either be run as a one-shot or neatly slotted into a long-running campaign. No matter which you choose, it provides both adventures and DMs alike a chance to try out some of the new monsters from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, including the foul corpse flower and terrifying boneclaw.

  • Recommended Level: 8-10
  • Estimated play time: 3-5 hours
  • Dificulty: Medium
  • Setting: Wilderness
  • Themes: Wilderness, Social, Combat

Note: This adventure is intended to work with Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and requires a copy of the book to run succesfully.

I played this module last night:

We managed to get it done in 4 hours, but I had to cut some of it out. I suspect that we needed another hour to use all the content in this adventure. So yeh, 5hrs sounds like a good estimation.

Ok, I've rated this 5 Stars (just coz I really like Richard's work) - but it does lack a few small things which would have probably made me bleat continuously about how cool it was to run. HOWEVER.. for $2... buy it, it is a fun night of D&D with yah buddies.

So the good things? It is written in a way which divides up the main events (3 main ones). I loved this. It helped massively with running it.

Other good things, the adventure was brilliant at keeping the PCs guessing RIGHT up until the last encounter LOL. My PC's loved it.

I guess the areas I felt that were lacking were memorable locations, awesome/creative loot, and a sense of this being a special encounter/adventure. I had to work really hard to inject personality...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
