When the Stars Align - A Tome of Foes Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Make a Wish on a Falling Star...

Evil is stirring in the tiny village of Akeley - an evil that reaches out to minds that drift through the inky void between the stars.

However, not all that comes from the skies comes with malice. A band of rather unusual warriors have are resolved to deal with the infestation before it can spread, though they cannot conquer it alone.

Perhaps it’s blind chance that brings together the players in this strange and terrible drama, or perhaps it was written in the stars long, long ago

This short adventure can either be run as a one-shot or neatly slotted into a long-running campaign. No matter which you choose, it provides both adventures and DMs alike a chance to try out some of the new monsters from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, including the bizarre Star Spawn and interplanetary mercanary hippos known as the giff (no, that's not a joke).

  • Recommended Level: 4-6
  • Estimated play time: 3-5 hours
  • Dificulty: Hard
  • Setting: Wilderness, Urban
  • Themes: Wilderness, Exploration Combat

Note: This adventure is intended to work with Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and requires a copy of the book to run succesfully.

I bought the "tales from the tome" version so I can't post an actual review here, but I can copy my review from that page:

My players soured me on this one, a bit. Do keep in mind this adventure features space hippos with guns(!) and if you have players like a certain player of mine they may experience a sudden cessation of their higher brain functions, grab the guns and run into the woods rather than interact with the hippos (in an unconnected one-shot, the friggin loot goblin!) so... hopefully you won't need it but maybe have a plan for that? I think if I run it again there'll just be a dm-magic forcefield protecting the guns next time, because I only have four hours to run the damn things and you *really* can't do much with the guns before they break. Jeez.

Other than my players not wanting to interact with the group of NPCs they'd need to work together with to survive - probably should have just let them die, with how much I *still* get annoyed thinking about that game...See more

So, the Ambush Map doesn't match the one shown in the PDF.

Are you using the "Tales from the Tome" version? That's what I have and there's an "ambush" map and an "ambush-stars" map that is the right one.

Maybe that helps, lol.

also had this problem, had to track it down on drivethrurpg and buy it a second time to get the right map -- don't love that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
