The Mage-Knight Class

One of the first things I noticed when I first perused the Player's Handbook all those years ago was this: despite introducing two examples of a "half-caster" base class (paladin and ranger), both options were divine. If someone wanted an arcane warrior-mage hybrid—a concept that goes back to D&D's earliest days, when "elf" was a class—you have to be either a fighter dabbling in magic (Eldritch Knight) or a full-caster dabbling in swordplay (Valor Bard).

Well, I wanted a true gish.

It seems I'm not alone. After publishing the Mage-Knight in early 2018, it eventually managed to climb the ranks and become a bestseller, in spite of all the warts that came with my first attempt at class design.

In light of this class's new bestseller status, I decided it's time for a makeover. Now that I've got some design experience under my belt (including the phenomenally-popular Slayer class), I returned to this pet concept of mine so I could turn it into something genuinely unique and fun to play.

What's Inside:

  • A full 20-level base class using the "half-caster" chassis
  • Class features focused on blending magic and combat
  • A whopping FOUR subclasses: the Aegis, Arcane Archer, Ritualist, and Spellblade
  • An assortment of brand-new spells to complement the class

What are the subclasses?

  • Aegis: Pick up a shield and augment your magical defenses in cool ways!
  • Arcane Archer: Much more "arcane" than the fighter version in XGtE, but still plenty "archer!"
  • Ritualist: Supplement your combat abilities with a broad range of utility through vast ritual magic!
  • Spellblade: Focus on magical melee combat in a classic "magus" style!

Don't forget to leave a review, and be sure to check out my other work as well. Thank you!

Did you just repost an existing file? DMsGuild said the file was updated, but the name of the file is the same as the one posted in August and the changelog is the same as August.

No, I just took down the pre-overhaul version of the class. Sorry for the confusion, I didn't realize it would give you a notification for that!

This class is pretty cool. My only concern is that the Ritualist subclass is a bit underpowered when compared to the others. True it gets access to 8th level spells (if I read that correctly) but only as rituals. In battle it doesn't seem very useful. Outside though seems like a different matter. Though if the situation needs speed then trying to use the spells gained by the subclass could end up being a detriment. Everything else about the class seems like it will be fun to try out.

It reminds me of the Duskblade from 3.5e. I really enjoyed the Duskblade. I will probably use this class for the elves in my campaign, who still practice this ancient martial/arcane gish nonsense. :) Oh and I suppose my players can use it too.

Well, that's embarrassing. Fixed! Re-download and you should be good to go. Thanks for the heads-up!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
