The Howling Valley

ADD TO WISHLIST >
PDF
$0.00

A town in the middle of the mountains. An abandoned monastery. A dark menace buried in stone.

This is a little adventure designed for 3-4 level 4 players. The main intent behind this was to provide a small adventure in an aestethically pleasing way, because in my experience as a DM, this makes it a lot easier to get into preparing it.

The Howling Valley may occur in your campaign or can be played as a fun little oneshot, start and end can be adapted fully to the DMs wishes. Have Fun!

Really great adventure! I converted it into a Fantasy Grounds module. Since you provided your adventure for free, i was wondering if I could distribute it for free as well. You can reach me at temmpest@cox.net. Thank you!

Thanks so much for making this, I've had a few friends asking for an introduction to the game so this looks like a really nice setup for a one shot! One quick question: you mentioned lumberjacks for the appendix but I can't seem to find them, could I get an indication of how strong they are meant to be?

Hi, I'm humbled and glad you like it! I chose to discard the appendix and forgot to delete the references to it in the PDF. A new, updated version has been uploaded! For the lumberjacks, you can use the "Guard" statblock in the MM on page 347.

What is the expected XP gain or level gain from this?
Customer avatar
Tobias S March 21, 2018 2:53 pm UTC
CREATOR
In the testruns, the gained XP varied between 800-1000 for each player. It depends on the overall approach of your party. Some encounters can be fully avoided or be solved in a non-combat way, in which case you can decide how to reward the PCs :)

The introduction to the module writes,
"Hook
"The Players can be dropped into this adventure quite easily by letting them receive a letter from the village. (see appendix)."
I see no Appendix and I am left wondering if this is a typo from an earlier concept or perhaps the letter is something you forgot to insert before uploading.
I would recommend carefully reading the summary page because there are lots of spelling and grammatical errors present, though with the homebrewery's lack of a spell checker I know how easy it is to make such errors.

Regardless, the layout is splendid and the art on the cover and throughout the module is brilliant (I would love to know where you got them all from).

I will be running this on the coming Monday or Tuesday and will be posting constructive criticism shortly after if any is needed. Thanks for taking the time to share your module :)

Hi, the letter was something from an early draft which i didn't finish, although I might add it later on. I'm not a native speaker so it's quite possible that some errors have snuck in ..
Except the artwork on page 4, these are all illustrations of the german painter Casper David Friedrich, they can all be found on his Wikimedia page :)
Thank you for your remarks and kind words, I'd love to hear some feedback when you've finished running it! :)

I've now read through the full PDF and shall be running it on Friday, scaled up for a party of 4-6.

So far I've noted some things. This is a great PDF, so please understand that these are only suggestions to help improve it:
• Page 5, Lumberjacks: 4 lumberjacks assist the players. As per the other comments in this thread there is no Lumberjack in the Monster Manual, so I recommend changing this to "Lumberjacks (LN Guards)"
• Page 5 & 6, Mountain Pass Description: On page 5 the player's meet Tavon Fletcher and he gives them their quest. On page 6 (titled "The Mountain Pass") it is implied that either Fletcher is accompanying the party to the base of the pass or that he is pointing it out while the party is still in the village. Either is fine but this really threw me off, so I think there should be clarification somewhere.
• Page 6, Vegetation: The moment I ask for my players to make an Arcana check they will know the vegetation was drained of life by...See more

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll update the PDF as soon as i find the time. I really like the idea of rewarding the players concerning the decision on the villages' treasure. I hope you and your party had a blast!

Hiya, looks interesting, will give it a run. Despite the CR6 rating I'm pretty sure the main villain will get slaughtered by a level 4 party in one to three rounds unless she's lucky. I think I will be adding a couple of monsters as bodyguards.

Hi Rick, I'm humbled that you want to run the adventure! I created the villain and his stats on my own and had two testruns in which the fight was quite balanced. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the module when you've played it!

Hi Tobias, thanks for the reply. Some of the D&D 5e content I create is for use with Fantasy Grounds VTT. If you are up for it, I would like to make a Fantasy Grounds version of your adventure and I would split the Royalties with you 50%. You would still be credited as the author and I would be credited with the conversion; and this would not require any work or time on your part, as you have already wrote the story. Then when you do have some time, that is if you are still interested, we could work on a new project or projects.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
