The Ravager - A 5th Edition Class

Ravagers; born in the fires of combat these warriors have a sole focus on the battlefield - eliminating their foes in a wave of blades. Lacking the discipline of other fights the Ravager relies on relentless attacking to overwhelm their foes. Later these savage righters go on to adopt blood rituals to give them strength or become veteran warriors capable of skilled feats of combat.

This class provides players with a mix of fighter and barbarian playstyles to offer a new experience. Lacking the constitituion of the barbarian or armour of the fighter, the ravager is a character designed to deal out as much damage as they can.

In terms of balace playtesting is still going on. Any feedback on the class is greatly appreciated.

So. Quick question to anyone who can answer. Does it seem that the CLASS skill
Go For the Kill
At 8th Level your attack rolls are critical hits on a 19 instead of a 20. At 16th level this number is
reduced to an 18.
And the ARCHETYPE skill
Veteran Fighter
Starting at 14th level you can add these
effects to your attacks. Before making
an attack you can use your bonus action
to apply any of the effects to your next
Wild Swings: +10 to damage if the attack
Precise Blow: Your required roll for a
critical hit is now 19 or 20.
Are the same ish? Like why is it specifying that you can Crit on 19 and 20 on THAT particular swing. You can always do that at this level. Am I misunderstanding something? Please tell me if I am.

Ah the precise blow skill is supposed to be "reduce number required to crit by 1". I'll be updating the ravager in the coming weeks with a new visual layout and some updates from play testing.

I haven't seen it in action, but raw Extra Attack at level 1 should be considered a non starter unless your entire campaign is off the rails with electric guitars. As is, a level 1 Ravager has nearly identical damage output as a level 5 fighter All. The. Time. and it only scales up from there. That's out of balance and arguments that a fighter's better AC and HP are mitigating factors is valid, but I would say insufficient.

A conditional extra attack, possibly by taking strain (losing HP equal to level) or by invoking disadvantage, I could see. Example: Ravaging Attacks: When you hit with a melee attack against a target (so this would include bonus action attacks and Opportunity Attacks) you may immediately choose to lose your level in HP and make another attack with the same weapon. These additional attacks cannot trigger Ravaging Attacks.

So a two weapon fighter at level 1 could make 4 attacks in one round at the cost of 15-20% of their HP.

I might look into something...See more

Hey Matthew,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. The ravaging attacks seem to be a more balanced approach, and adds more thought to the player's actions. I've reduced the extra attacks down to four and added the ravaging attack feature.

Updated a few other bits such as armour and recharge of certain abilities, I've always leaned more towards making something powerful and slowly toning it down so I appreciate this help you've given me here.

The meat grinder attack is also pretty awesome.

Thank you for all the help and support Matthew, any further comments or advice are always appreciated.

No problem. Looking at the 1.1 file you've got, the actual description for extra attacks still has the old text though the class leveling chart has been modified. Good luck with this!

Also, given how awesome this would be combined with Barbarian (Reckless attacking and making 4 great axe attacks at level 6?) etc, you might want to put in a sidebar about disallowing multiclassing, maybe come up with a basic fluff based reason. Like my Beast Patron for warlocks is a "jealous and all consuming thing that won't abide deviation from duty to your pact" but that's only because a 1 level dip would make every assassin a walking catastrophe.

Just a thought. I'd also appreciate a mention in the credits as follows "Other contributions by Matt Conlon." If you want to make the name a hyperlink to one of my products that would be stellar.

Oh whoops. Will fix that typo.

Will add that credit on my next update. Probably Sunday as I'll be celebrating St Patrick's day and then recovering.

Thanks again Matthew. Stay fabulous sir.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
