Moon over Graymoor

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A dark curse settles over the town of Graymoor...

Moon over Graymoor is a short adventure written for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, for first level player characters. It is intended to be a good first adventure to run; something for new players, or even a new Dungeon Master to try.

The players are turned loose in a hamlet that has suffered a handful of vicious murders, and it’s up to them to investigate. Players will gather clues, canvass the villagers, and if they’re smart, pick up a few things along the way that might just give them enough bite to face off against the
beast, and survive.

The second adventure I ran for my group. It has a good mix of exploring and problem-solving in addition to fighting. What was especially helpful was that the different events were self contained and could be explored in any order, letting my players follow their theories and interests. Note that there are a few parts of the notes or the read-out-loud parts that have days (three days, two days, tomorrow, etc.) that need to be adjusted. We all had fun, and I will definitely have it on my run-again list.

FYI there's a pretty significant continuity issue in the timing of Ser Thames's letter. It says the weapon will arrive in two days, but if he actually wrote that, it would be two weeks ago. I had a player spot that immediately and had to tapdance around and say that there was some conflicting information and some might not be reliable, but I think it would be better to word the letter so that the thing gets delivered the night before the full moon or something like that, since we don't know how far before Ser Thames's death he would have written the letter.

Thanks for this - this is a known bug that I will 100% never get around to fixing unless someone pays me to do it! But i really appreciate it being in the comments; a few people have noted it and it's relatively important for new DMs to catch. I'm pretty sure it should just say two weeks instead of two days.

Tried DM'ing for the first time with this adventure and it turned out great. A good mix of mystery, plot turns and thrilling scenes. It's also written in a way that makes the story easy to control as a DM, and still adjustable it you would like to suit your player's fancy.

I'm running this through a second time and I've been meaning to make this my "go-to" for beginner oneshots and FLGS events.
Would love a print-friendly version though

Always been one of my favorite modules to run. I find it is good to randomly stick in more episodic style campaigns as well as to intro a bigger campaign. One time I had a party who when they tried to lock pick a door, I realized all three were rogues, so sneaking around and stuff was easy for them. And one time I had a party go to the tree before the package arrived and was convinced it was burried, so they spent a good 20 minutes trying to dig random holes and break stuff around it looking.

Snacks, extra dice, and some visual guides like maps or imagry usually helps people new to TTRPGs. I know that was a big issue for some of my new players was trying to visualize scenes.

I ran this as a beginner DM about 2 years ago and it was perfect for me and my group. My players were beginners as well so we all helped each other along the way. I'm planning to do this one again for a new set of players as I know it now and feel confident that this will be great for them as beginners as well. (first time DM-ing it took us about 8 hours to get it done and since we were late to game time we ended around 2am, but we had lots of fun so I wasn't complaining.)

I loved this entire thing. Still my favorite adventure of all time, since it's the perfect blend and balance of mystery, gore, thrilling twists and quick thinking all rolled into one nice campaign that can be played in a single sitting. I really want to find more like this. Does anybody have any suggestions for similar adventures?

Hey all! So I have a question for everyone! How long is this campaign? I’m going to be DMing a couple of sessions for my group here soon, as a fill in since our DM will be gone for a couple of weeks, so I’m looking for adventures to do. I absolutely love the “Wild Sheep Chase,” and want to do that one, but how long is this one? Think I could squeeze them both into two weeks, or would it be better to just do this one?

This is probably 1 long session or two moderate ones. When I DMed this for my players, we did two sessions, and it felt perfect, though I can totally see it happening on a single day of frenzy D&Ding if you like start after lunch and make an hour break in the middle for everyone, you should be done by 7/8

I am excited to be running this game as my first attempt at DM'ing... Is there anything I should keep in mind or think of from anyone who's run it before?

Such an excellent Level 1 adventure. Cheers to the creator.

I have one question that bothers me though and I can't seem to find the ansewr. Isn't it important for the adventure listing where the Sir was killed? Did I miss something?

You didn't miss anything! I think it's not mentioned because it was two weeks ago, so the assumption is that it's been cleaned up and wherever it happened, there's nothing to find there anymore.

It is kinda implied that he died while writing the second letter in his house, but i'm not sure if I really thought through all the implications of that at the time :D

Ah. Perfect. I think it's hard for me to have the murder happening within the house, as when the characters enter it, they find it just... abandoned. And no one could enter it as.. it was locked and all! Hm... Alright, thank you dude! I will probaby have it that the knight was lured outside somehow. Cheers!

A good little adventure module, and well suited to new characters. The creepy mystery atmosphere is fun to roleplay, with a simple but effective twist at the end. However it really could do with a few tweeks here and there. Simply put, the final boss fight is not only the only fight in the game, it risks being over too quickly to feel climactic; the players are literally handed the information to them, and get potentially three items that make them a bit OP. With a bit of work, there's more opportunities for small battle encounters to let new players get some kills in, then let them sink their RP chops into the investigation.
Wolves attack the party before they reach Graymoor.
When they travel to the blacksmith's home, bandits or kobolds are looting it.
If the party gets lost in the enchanted woods when trying to get to the witch, magical creatures attack.
The final boss can definitely be beefed up with some extra powers and abilities to balance out the player's magical presents, and a...See more

I ran this campaign for a small group of very new players this weekend and they all had a great time with it. The mystery was engaging enough to keep all of thier attention. Took about 4 hours counting bathroom breaks. Everything you need for a 1st level one shot, or an introduction to continued adventures. Note: I had to half the bbeg's HP since they didn't manage to use the "kill the boss" item. Still a great RP.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
