One-Shot: The Lair of Auntie Ethel

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A series of disappearances from nearby beaches has led to a dark panic descending on a small village. What’s taking the people? Are they safe? Only adventurers can help.

If you’re not a DM, look no further!

A One-Shot Adventure

The Lair of Auntie Ethel is an original adventure set in the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. It is meant for use with D&D’s fifth edition rules, and it is intended for three or more player characters at 3rd level.

As a one-shot, it is short and straightforward. DMs could run it as a sampler for new players, partner it with other one-shot adventures, or use it as a side-quest in a larger campaign. It’s up to the DM!

Word of Warning

This adventure has a very dark choice at the end: Do the PCs allow a baby to live, knowing the child will grow up to be a deadly creature? Due to this very disturbing decision, this adventure might not be suitable for all groups.

Note/Spoiler: This adventure predates and has no relation to the hag named Auntie Ethel encountered in the video game Baldur's Gate 3.

So any chance there are maps for the Cavern Lair? Being a DM for the first time I can get confused with just imagining and such so if I have something concrete to go off of I can make that easier on me.

Question about "Battle with the Rug of Smoothering"
In the box about the encounter with the Rug of Smoothering it reads.

"Remember, a grappled creature has 0 speed and can't take actions or reactions
exept to try to escape with a strength(Athletics) or Dexterity( Acrobatics)Check.

I dont think this is correct.
The creature is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, and at risk of suffocating, and the rug can't smother another target.
none of the abilites the Rug of Smoothering has can take away your actions and reactions outside of becoming Incapacitated/ Unconscious. which is not in its attack unless your hp drops to 0.

It mentions a Sea Spawn supposedly found on MM pg. 189, but I can't seem to find this monster on that page or any in the monster manual. Any help?

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It's actually in Volo's Guide to Monsters, not the Monster Manual. I will correct this asap. If you don't have that book, there might be astat block listing somewhere online.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
