King to an Empty City

ADD TO WISHLIST >

What good is a king without a city to rule over? What happens when everyone in a city disappears, gone without a trace?

This is the state in which an adventuring party, your characters, finds Sheol in; a city devoid of all life forms, claimed by Hegemon, a Wraith that used to be its king.

Explore the empty city! Be mindful of the thieves' guilds! Find your way to the portal that leads to the castle! Fight your way through the hoards of undead to foil Hegemon's insidious plan!

An adventure perfect for the middle part of any campaign, full of plot hooks, possible plot points and areas of exploration! Tons of places, like the Tower of Eiden, with backstories to tie in with any existing campaign! Discover the "Hell's Gifts", red gems that defy space!

This adventure offers:

  • 30 pages of exploration of an empty city and a castle swarming with undead.
  • Maps for major locations
  • Two new Monsters, Hegemon, and Corvus, also usable as NPCs.
  • 3 new magic items.
  • A plethora of plot hooks, possible plot points, and setting-neutral lore.
  • Many hours of fun gameplay

A Dungeons & Dragons adventure written for 8th level player characters, with level adjustments for levels 5-10 for the encounters.

"I would venture to guess that a lot of other authors and creators on the DM's Guild would have loved to have something of this quality on the DMs' Guild as their first go." DM_Dango, Youtube review.

"Encounter with the Edan Sha - A Prelude to the Empty City" is a free encounter that can be used to introduce the players to the threat of Hegemon. "The Necromanteion" is a dungeon crawl with high stakes, an opportunity for roleplaying and possible discussions with people long dead:

Depending on the mode of play you choose to play and the type of players you have, it might take from one very long session (about 4-5 hours) to approximately 8, I'd say. This of course can be cut short if your players are lucky and strong, or if they favour combat over exploration and social interactions.

I'd love to try this out, but I've noticed maps are missing?

"Use the map that is provided in the appendix as
a handout"

There are no maps in the appendix. Only monsters and items.

Purchased and read it through. The only thing I don't get is at the end...

What is the purpose of the Kings & Queens table? Are those creatures that spawn at the beginning of the encounter to fight them? Do they all spawn simultaneously? Further, where are the adventurers teleported to? There's no map to state where they show up, but in the throne room map, it looks as though there are 6 blocks that could represent the paintings. Would they just poof right in front of them, a respective creature based on a xd6 roll equal to the number of players/party members?

This bit seems very confusing and thrown together very quickly in contrast to an otherwise well-expressed and thought out narrative. I feel like more input and context from Corvus would be cool, too, adding some flavor and depth as the only friendly NPC. Despite the abrupt ending, it looks like it's gonna be a nice fun time. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
