Love Bites

Love Bites

Love Bugs are terrorizing the city of Port Nyanzaru! (You don't need the Tomb of Annihilation hardcover to run this adventure. A map of the city would be helpful, but isn't needed.) Can your players put an end to the infestation and help a kenku find love? Love Bites has something for everyone—a tale of unrequited love, a dinosaur chase, intrigue, and a fiendish plot!

This adventure is designed to work well inserted into a low level Tomb of Annihilation campaign, or as an introductory adventure to D&D as a whole. Additional guidance is included for running the adventure for a single player, so if you've ever thought about introducing a loved one to D&D, Love Bites is the perfect choice for a d8 night!

The adventure contains a few new magic items, several unique NPCs, and a few special monsters. Also included is a link to a thematically appropriate music playlist!

I ran this with a party of three level-4 characters. The part and I had a lot of fun with the whole module. The beginning fight took a literal hour in real time as they all tried to figure out ways they could hit the bugs because only ONE of them had spells, but kept rolling badly to hit. I eventually had to rule that the bug repellent they had bought when they entered the city could be used as the spell poison spray. I was very surprised with how strong the incubus was. I had read the module beforehand, but not the stats so when he swooped down to draining kiss one of the characters I drained them of all their health, and then some. In fact, between draining kiss and Meile's spells, they all died except Kenku who was blasted into the closet with Meile's lightning bolt and managed to survive with a single HP left. Wondering if I was supposed to level them down or what. Despite it taking 5 hours, we had a LOT of fun, and none of my players were upset with their deaths.

Draining Kiss is a very powerful ability, and the target needs to either be willing to kiss him or be charmed by him for it to work. With a party of only three people, I would recommend not using the charm ability since it can swing the odds too out of the players' favor. That would then entirely remove Draining Kiss from the calculations. Also, if you had Sanguliauti and Meile in the fight at the same time, he wouldn't be able to use his charm since he can only have one person charmed at a time and he already had Meile charmed. It's also important to remember that creatures charmed by an incubus can attempt the saving throw again every time they take damage. Meile doesn't have a great chance to break it, but it happened one of the times I ran it. She then helped take out Sanguliauti with a lightning bolt.

Meanwhile, prior to that fight, I had a player willingly go into the other room with Sanguliauti to try to "convince" him to stop his wicked ways. Like kissing an ash tray...

Is it just me, or is the Average Party Level table incomplete? It has no values. It just says "less than ____" or "equivalent than ___". I understand the calculation. That's not part of it. It says "3 characters, APL less than ____ Very weak", for example. Less than what? I know 4 characters of level 2 is the base, but this table seems incomplete to me. It's a thoughtful addition, but doesn't work well if there's no APL numbers to reference in the table.

Less than, equivalent to, or greater than the recommended APL of the adventure (which is, as you said, 4 2nd-level characters). It's too many words to squeeze into a table, so I did it how the AL modules do it. I'll try to figure out a way to make it more clear in future releases without taking up too much additional space.

This was a great module. So many inside jokes and awkward situations. My party laoughed through the whole thing.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
