The Dogfighter's Handbook

The engines screamed as Vincent slammed the throttle open, banking the old D-Grade aircraft into a sharp, declining tailspin. The flak cannons from the gigantic B-Grade airship opened up in response, peppering the air with clouds of deadly shrapnel. Dipping low beneath the exploding shards of metal, Vincent fought the battered aircraft for control; the cowling ripping off in a shower of sparks as the biplane skimmed the surface of the ocean. He pulled upward, taking aim at the steel behemoth flying above him, before squeezing the trigger.

What is the Dogfighter's Handbook?

This supplement brings a host of new rules for airship combat to the world of D&D! From tiny, one man fighters to vast flying fortresses, The Dogfighter's Handbook is a perfect tool for players and DMs to create their very own personal aircraft. Dart into deadly dogfights, or even massive fleet battles.

Modify your aircraft and watch as it grows from a simplistic fighter into a specialised weapon of destruction that compliments your character's playstyle. Or grab a flying mount and take the fight directly to the heart of the enemy with rules for grappling and boarding!

Contents:

  • Rules for aerial combat, including flying mounts, creatures and boarding assaults.
  • A complete guide to aircraft construction, from D-grade fighters to A-grade flying fortresses
  • Fuel Management, usage and refueling costs
  • Bounty mechanics and encounter balancing when using aircraft in combat
  • Rules for crew management, including recruitment, repairing, and upgrading aircraft.
  • 5 different chassis and engine types
  • 30 different weapon options
  • 5 experimental weapon types
  • 22 different specialist upgrades
  • A form fillable aircraft character sheet, and 5 example aircraft to get you started, designed by Matthew Mutch.

If I may ask for clarification on a topic regarding using Ariship Weapons:

I see that you add your proficiency (if you have it) to the attack bonus of each weapon, and you add the ship's Dexterity modifier to all its weapon's damage rolls. However if you have the Extra Attack feature, does that let you fire a weapon (or weapon's burst) more than once per turn? Like, if I were playing a level 5 fighter in a ship that has a Light Autocannon, can I fire 8 bullets on my turn, or only 4?

Thanks for the question!
You could fire only 4, unless you used Action Surge.

It takes your action to fire an airship weapon, which is why certain weapons have a rate of fire option (and make more than one shot when used) to offset this.
So while a fighter can't use their extra attack option to launch a ton of shots reliably, they CAN use their action surge to fire a ship's weapon twice in the same turn!

I hope this helps, and thanks for your support!

Hello, Vall; The updated sheets seem to working perfectly!

I was hoping to gain some clarification, on a separate matter. I apologize once more for the use of your time.

On the ship sheet, there are three sets of boxes with which to track an aircraft's physical ability scores; One box for the full score, one for the ability mod, and a third slot which I'm having a devil of a time figuring out the purpose for. I've consulted the example airship sheets as reference, and I've failed to grasp it. The C Grade Example, for instance, has a +2 added to the ability modifier for the first two ability scores, but then seems to lose a significant portion of it's ability modifier from the third score. Could you perhaps help explain things to me a bit?

Yessssss! SO glad that update worked! Hopefully it'll work for everyone else as well. :)

There are 3 boxes available for the stats of the aircraft on the stat sheet. The little box on the top is for saving throw proficiencies, the middle one is for the ability score modifier, and the bottom one is for the actual ability score stat.

As per the handbook, the aircraft shares the pilot's saving throw proficiencies, so I gave the C grade a basic +2 prof bonus to represent it being crewed by any basic NPC.
The NPC is proficient in Strength and Dex saves, but not Constitution, so that explains the measly +3 bonus the aircraft has in that regard.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit! :)

I'm having trouble imaging the size/type of airships based on the class. Is E sort of like a fighter jets, D sort of like the millennium falcon, C like a cargo ship etc?
Customer avatar
Vall S May 23, 2019 9:30 pm UTC
CREATOR
Pretty much!

E grades are things like one man fighter planes or fighters for halflings, D grades are fighter/bombers that can normally house up to 2 people (or maybe a large creature, like a Minotaur).
C grades are the most varied, with Millennium Falcon at the smallest, and Oil tankers at the bigger end of the scale.
And finally, A grades are massive airships that can be used as mobile bases, and normally require a fleet to take out. Probably like Star Wars Imperial cruisers.

Exciting stuff, I'm glad you like it, and thank you for the support!
My current campaign uses it a lot, and the players love it. One of them has a B grade airship (similar to one of the floating ironclads pictured on the front), and another player has just 'acquired' a magical mech from The Greasemonkey's Handbook. Together, battles have been absolute chaos!
Here's hoping your players give you some fantastic stories to tell :)

I'm also having the same issue with the stat sheet and the examples. Examples are blank and the sheet is not form-fillable. I'm using acrobat DC if that helps - but couldn't get it to work in chrome or drawboard either. Also, it says there is some password needed in the security tab in acrobat - not sure if that is helpful...

That's... very strange. I'm currently chatting to the developer of the stat sheet, so a fix is on the way! Thanks for letting me know. We'll get this sorted as soon as possible.

Hi Neil,
I've sent the feedback along to the PDF designer, and so far he's not found any faults his end and is genuinely confused as to why it's not working for you.
I have the feeling it could be something to do with the uploaded version of the fillable, so I'll be re-uploading a new version of it later this week which, fingers crossed, might provide a fix for you.

Failing that, we may have to redesign the entire fillable from scratch, but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that! Thanks for your patience! <3

Hi Dylan, thanks for the message!

The Greasemonkey's Handbook was designed to be compatible with the Dogfighter's Handbook, and certainly meshes rather well. We've been using both supplements in our own campaigns and so far had no problems. :)

Could you give me more information about the 'examples being blank and not form fillable'?

Might it perhaps be possible to get a proper Form-Fillable version of the ship sheet? It's possible that something just went pear-shaped on my end, but it would be tremendously helpful.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
