Product History

"Tasslehoff's Map Pouch: The War of the Lance" (2006), by Sean Macdonald, is a gaming accessory produced by Sovereign Press for the Dragonlance 3e RPG line. It was published in April 2006.

About the Cover. Each of the three Map Pouches shows Tasslehoff at a different age. "War of the Lance" pictures the youngest Tasslehoff.

Continuing the Map Pouches. A year after the first Map Pouch, Sovereign continued the series with a supplement for their second campaign setting companion, War of the Lance (2004). Though this era of Krynn had received great coverage in the classic The Atlas of the Dragonlance World (1987), "War of the Lance" gave Sovereign the opportunity to produce beautiful, full-color maps of many famous parts of Krynn.

Expanding Krynn. Many of the maps in "War of the Lance" tie in to locations from the original 12 Dragonlance adventures (1984-1986).

  • Ansalon. There's once more a poster-sized map of the continent of Ansalon (as well as a smaller map featuring Tasslehoff's annotations). It was generally considered the best map for the era since the (slightly unfinished) map that appeared in Tales of the Lance (1992). It does have at at least one minor error though: Sargonath appears, but actually wasn't founded until the Summer of Chaos.
  • Claren Elian. An island-based "ruin of mystery" that was touched upon in DL12: "Dragons of Faith" (1986). Though there's some information on the island in The Odyssey of Gilthanas (1999), this locale was probably intended as another largely undeveloped area for GMs to go crazy with — like the Darkling Hall map in "Tasslehoff's Map Pouch: The Age of Mortals" (2005).
  • Daargard Keep. The home of Lord Soth. The castle (and Soth) were first mentioned in DL8: "Dragons of War" (1985). The whole keep was then mapped out in DL16: "World of Krynn" (1988); the adventure is considered largely non-canonical, but the Keep maps are the good bit. An alternate keep, Nedragaard, appeared in the Ravenloft adventure Where Black Roses Bloom (1995).
  • Haven. The home of the Seekers, and later the Red dragonarmy. It was first described in DL1: "Dragons of Despair" (1984).
  • Inn of the Last Home. The tavern in Solace where the Dragonlance Saga began in DL1: "Dragons of Despair" (1984). It later became the namesake of a series of Krynn sourcebooks (1987, 2000, 2007).
  • Kendermore. The home of the kender, first appearing ever-so-briefly in DL12: "Dragons of Faith" (1986). It got a tiny bit more attention in the eponymous novel, Kendermore (1989).
  • Silvanesti Nightmare. The fallen elf nation of Silvanesti as it appeared during DL10: "Dragons of Dreams" (1985), when it was being warped by a dragon orb.
  • Skullcap. The tomb of Fistandalus, which players could explore in DL3: "Dragons of Hope" (1984)
  • Thorbardin. A dwarven kingdom. It was originally detailed in DL4: "Dragons of Desolation" (1984), which was novelized decades later in Dragons of the Dwarven Depths (2006).
  • Tower of High Sorcery: Palanthas. One of the three surviving high towers of sorcery during the late Age of Despair. It's mentioned briefly in early sources like DL10: "Dragons of Dreams" (1985) and the original Dragonlance Chronicles (1984-1985), but appears more prominently in novels such as Dragonlance Legends (1985-1986) and Dalamar the Dark (2003).
  • Castle Ulgurmere of Lemish, a Flying Citadel. Contrary to popular belief, the floating castle on the cover of DL4: "Dragons of Desolation" (1984) isn't one of the Dragonarmies' flying citadel, but instead the Derkin's floating tomb; players were able to investigate an actual floating citadel (under construction) in DL13: "Dragons of Truth" (1986). Ulgurmere is a sample black dragonarmy citadel that appeared in the War of the Lance (2004) sourcebook.

About the Creators. This was the second of three Map Pouches that Macdonald produced for Sovereign Press … one for each of their major campaign eras.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
