Backgrounds of Faerûn

ADD TO WISHLIST >

From Aglarond to Vaasa, the realms are varied and enormous. But why settle for a "Bounty Hunter" or "Noble" as your background when you can dabble and mix with the backgrounds presented here? Certainly a Noble from the Moonshae Isles, friend of the Ffolk and foe of Malar is far more interesting! Or a Thayan Bounty Hunter, sent to recover slaves who have found themselves liberated. The combinations are endless!

Contained within you will find 34 backgrounds tied to specific regions, each with inspirational material like new trinkets, racial demographics of the region, and how common certain classes are.

You will also find 11 brand new backgrounds related to the various organizations of the Forgotten Realms and a table of over 300 new trinkets for any character!

While you're at it, check out our other titles!

On the surface, a good product, but marred by some major mistakes when it comes to lore. Here is what I have found:

Page 5: It says the Humans of Aglarond were originally Untherite. 'Races of Faerun' says the majority of the inhabitants are Damaran. It is also does not mention that Half-Elves are descended from the Yuir Elves.

Page 7: It says the Humans of Amn are of primarily Tethyrian, Chondathan, or Illuskan descent. 'Races of Faerun' states 65% of the population is Tethyrian, 30% is Calishite, and only 4% is Chondathan, with no Illuskans mentioned at all.

Page 9: It says most Humans in Calimshan are Calishite, and that one can occasionally see Chondathans. 'Races of Faerun' says 43% percent of the population is Tethyrian, 4% is Shaaran, and does not talk about Chondathans.

Page 11: It says most Humans in Chessenta can are Mulan or Turami, without exception. 'Races of Faerun' says 4% is Chondathan, so I think might be helpful to include that as well.

Thank you for your reply! Many sources were used for this book, with the intent to bring these regions into 5e based on major events that happened from the 2e and 3e era, the 4e spellplague, and current conditions post second sundering.

It's worth noting that I tried to ensure all editions were valid, but the numbers between them just didn't work so comparing these values to any one source just won't work out. But it's a good guideline for new DMs who weren't as familiar with the realms (when I published this, it was because I was disappointed with how little there was in the SCAG, to point out how old the publication is)

I generally think using 3/3.5 edition as a basis is the best, as I don't think the Spellplague would have changed demographics to a degree (in those states which were not wiped out).

Just wanted to say I've found this an excellent product for fleshing out characters. Great work.

I do have a couple of questions:
1) The first few regions list the Personality Traits as specific to the background, ie for Aglarond: Red Hunter Personality Trait. By the time you get to Halruaa, the personality traits are simply listed as the region, ie: Halruaa Personality Trait. Was this intentional?
2) In the Suggested Characteristics of Mulhorand on pg 38, the word THE starts a sentence but nothing follows. Was this an oversight and nothing should be there or is it missing some text?

Once again, these questions are minor. Overall, an excellent product!

So remembering that this was released in 2018, and so I'm going from my admittedly spotty brain:

1. Honestly, probably just a format change I never noticed. When making the product I was using homebrewery, and with each new background I'd copy and paste the last one. So at some point the style changed.

2. This is not intentional. There should be a small definition of what it means to be a Mulhorandi. Unfortunately my original files are not compatible with current iteration of Homebrewery so I won't be able to update this issue.

I am glad you enjoy the product, especially considering it was my first book and done entirely by one person! Thank you so much!

Have you given any consideration to make this available for print-on-demand? It's a sizeable book, and would look great on my bookshelf!

I looked at it, but at the moment the DMsGuild only is doing POD for products with the same day release for PDF. Since I already released this, it's a no go.

Well that's disappointing. I'll have to find another avenue to print this. Thanks for the response!

No worries. The future hope is to compile all the backgrounds books together. Since that would be a new product, I could try launching with POD at that time.

Any chance you'll be doing an expansion for Kara-Taur or Zakhara?

I'd actually love to do those. Right now I'm finishing up the non-human race background books, but those would be a great "next" thing to do!

Updated Version 2. Sorry about that folks, didn't check the PDF after exporting, but it looks like the PDF printer mucked up with table placement and the back cover red diamond. Fixed now.

Please note that while these are specific to regions around the forgotten realms, these backgrounds *can* be used anywhere. Talk with your DM if there's one that you feel suits your character.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
