Beholder, Beholderkin & Fungi Supplement (5e)

The Waterdhavian Enquirer proudly presents the latest in xenozoological fieldwork on the subject of social beholders. Brought to you by a team of Faerûn's most intrepid explorers, keen-eyed journalists and fearsome editors, this feature article is targeted at the educated layperson, and will be suitable for use by adventuring professionals, researchers and armchair travelers alike.

The Beholder, Beholderkin & Fungi Supplement is written in the form of an in-universe bestiary. It features a roster of monsters particularly suited to populating a beholder's lair or the rungs of a beholder's organization.

Entries include:

  • The fearsome eye hegemon itself, whose eye rays pound adventurers into submission, if not dust
  • The cute-as-a-button devoted eye, dreamed into existence as a loyal companion
  • The ordnance eye, an angsty artillery piece surely thought up by a munchkin of a beholder
  • The thick-lipped tormenting eye, for the interrogation encounter that will leave adventurers yearning for the sweet waters of Lethe
  • 2 Gas Spore variants to surprise seasoned adventurers
  • 2 Fungal Beholderkin to confuse just about everyone at the table
  • A mushroom that gives you fly 20 ft. (hover) until it compels you to explosively burp
  • (Fungal) wine: you'll be wanting some by the time you've read to the end

A fun selection of variant beholders and gas spores, written in a faux-scholarly style. The variants are interesting designs, and the authors also show their research on older-edition lore, which is appreciated. The only disappointment is that it' [...]

I'm a sucker for anything to do with Beholders, and I use fungi a lot in my games, so a supplement combining the two was always going to grab my interest. I'm happy to say that this is really well put together, presenting some fresh beholder lore along [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
