Whether you’re playing an all-monster party or just want to play a monstrous race in an otherwise normal party, this document presents rules for playing every creature in the Monster Manual, new feats and backgrounds for monstrous characters, analysis of officially published races, highly detailed rules for building your own races, new rules for tiny races, and rules for templates for player characters.

This supplement is for 5th-edition Dungeons and Dragons. Currently DM's Guild only allows community submissions for 5th edition.

What is in this document?

  • 228 playable races (every creature in the Monster Manual, no exceptions!)
  • 116 subraces
  • 13 templates for Player Characters, including new rules for Lycanthropes and Vampires
  • Design notes discussing how everything in the document was built and suggestions for changing everything to fit your game
  • Rules for Tiny, Large, Huge, and Gargantuan player races
  • 5 new feats
  • 3 new backgrounds
  • Analysis of all of the official published races with suggestions for ways to alter them
  • Extensive Race Builder rules for building your own races, including 2 new races designed from the ground up to show you how it works (Mongrelfolk, and Animated Tomes)
  • Template Builder rules for building your own templates for player characters
  • Includes both the full version of Monstrous Races and the Monstrous Races Compact Edition, a slimmed-down version of the document with a lot of the clutter removed to make it a great reference option on the go

Does that seem like a lot? It is! Are you still not sure? Take a look at the preview, which covers the first 20 pages of the document, including the rules for Tiny creatures and complete racial traits for 7 races.

Featured on KotakuVice, and the D&D Character Lab Podcast, a front-page post on /r/DnD/, and thanks to all of you fine folks, an Adamantine Best Seller on DM's Guild in less than 48 hours!

Thanks to Rob Twohy and his team, Monstrous Races is now available for the Fantasy Grounds Virtual Tabletop!

Hey Tyler, you mentioned in previous comments about a file which explained rules for larger characters, but I don't seem to have it. Does it come with the purchase or am I missing something obvious? Thanks!

If you look at the product page (this page), right next to the cover image you'll see the text "You Have Purchased This Product", and beneath it you should see three links to each of the three files included in this product. The file you're looking for is listed as "(Monstrous_Races_Addendum_-_Larger_Players.pdf)". I don't know why the file names are all in parentheses.

That's strange. Does it give you a .zip file? Or just the main Monstrous Races PDF?

Just the main PDF, I've looked in my library to see if it gives more options there but it says the only file is the main PDF.

Hi there! I love this all, btw!

Currently creating an Animated Sword that's a Chef, and deciding between Eldritch Knight Fighter (slicing, dicing, fire for searing, prestidigitation), Wizard (recipe book, prestigitation), Four Elements Monk (unarmed strike + heat to cook). Open palm monk seems best mathematically, but less good thematically than the other three... what do you think would work well? :P

Ooh, that's a fun question! I absolutely love the concept, too!

I think I would go Eldritch Knight. Most of your fighting is still going be prep work (chopping and dicing things), and eventually you'll be promoted from prep cook and start casting spells and heating things.

Bonus points: You look like a large chef's knife and say stuff like "en flambe" instead of "en garde".

Ghosts are listed in the Table of Contents on page 2 of the Full Size Preview (middle column close to the bottom). I wrote ghosts as a template rather than as a standalone race so that you can make any valid creature into a ghost.

Aren't Tiefling's BP ratings missing points / marked incorrectly? None of the subraces have different amount of BP marked from the core Tiefling's Innate Spellcasting (5BP).

The core Tiefling also claims that it gets 3rd level spell when Darkness is 2nd level spell.

Some of the subraces also claim their spell is "2rd" level...

You're absolutely right. I double-checked my math and I definitely got the numbers wrong. And I clearly copy+pasted the "2rd" typo several times.

I'll get those issues corrected next time I post updated files.

So I bought two copies of Monstrous Races so that I could give a copy away to my community, thinking that there would be a key or something that I could give. How do I give a copy to someone?

Unfortunately, I don't know if you can do it that way. Try contacting DMsGuild's customer service. I think that there's a way to purchase gift copies, but I haven't done it in a long time so I don't recall how. You should also see if you can get a refund for the second copy you bought if you need to purchase a separate gift copy. My experiences with the DMsGuild team have all been extremely positive, so I'm sure that they'll be able to help you out.

Hey, I know this is a likely rather difficult question to answer, but about how many BP would you consider a 1st level druid's wildshape to be? I'm particularly interested in how the CR of the beasts you can shift into translates into BP.

If you find time to answer this, many thanks! And if you don't, I'd still like to thank you for this amazing document.
Customer avatar
Tyler K March 10, 2020 3:16 am UTC
CREATOR
That one's hard to answer, but it's a spectacular ability both in and out of combat so I would say 4 BP or higher. Druids, especially Circle of the Moon, are arguably the strongest characters in the game at 2nd level when they get Wild Shape.

Tyler, love your content on RPG Bot. Love what you've done with this material too, it's pretty sweet and I enjoy how you walk through your thought process on your design choices.

Quick question I wanted to ask. How does the damage scale for a dragon's unarmed attack / breath weapon that increases its size according to the rules you laid out? Does the elemental damage scale too?

Hi Thomas, thanks for the kind words! I've put a ton of work into Monstrous Races and RPGBOT, so it's always great to hear that people enjoy my work.

That's a great question! I definitely didn't discuss addressing natural weapons with multiple damage types. Generally when I designed a race with split damage (like 1d4 piercing and 1d4 poison, 1d4 slashing and 1d4 fire, etc.), I consider 2d4 roughly equivalent to 1d8 (it's not a perfect equivalency; but it's 0.5 damage difference on average, and I base a ton of my decisions on mathematical averages). So: When you scale a race with split damage, try to follow that line of thinking.

For example: Let's say that you're playing a medium red dragon, which has a XXX which deadly 1d4 slashing and 1d4 fire damage. You then become large by whichever means you choose. The Weapons table on page 5 of Monstrous Races Addendum: Larger Players lists progressions for different die sizes. If we treat 2d4 as equal to 1d8, we can use that row. We bump the...See more

Thank you. I am playing a giant rat for a campaign. I have bought the pdf and I have noticed some strange things in the giant rat section. For example it has the no hands trait which says that its tentacles can hold objects. Clearly rats don't have tentacles and they also do have hands that can actually hold things very well. Also in the design notes section it switches to talking about giant poisonous snakes mid paragraph. Other than that I am very excited to use this. My character has hypochondria and thinks he has the plague and I love him very much.

Thanks for spotting those errors! There are definitely some proof-reading errors lingering in the document, but I post periodic updates when I find them. I'll get the document updated and post an updated version soon.

On the subject of rats having hands: In terms of "hands", the rules typically refer to a primate-style hand with an opposable thumb or a similar appendage with equivalent capabilities. I'm in no way qualified to argue whether or not rats' forepaws count as hands or if their digits are sufficiently capable to qualify as a hand or not. My general guidelines are that a hand-equivalent should be able to write words with a pen, turn a key in a lock, and use an appropriately-sized weapon like a human would. By default I don't think rats meet that distinction, but I don't know if anyone has tried training rats to use tiny pens, so I might be totally wrong.

If you want your character's paws to work as hands, talk to your DM about it. You can start from the traits for giant...See more

Rats don't have opposable thumbs but their fingers are very versatile and certainly can hold things. While sadly they have not been taught to write with tiny pens(tiny pens are not widely available and also real rats don't have the mental capacity to learn language) if a rat were to be sentient I would imagine they could use their hands the way an amputee missing their thumbs but still having their fingers could still write and hold stuff. I am in no means an expert, I just really love rats.

All of the art comes from the official DMs Guild Creator Resource packs, which are distributed for free on DMsGuild for use in DMsGuild content.

Unfortunately they're not organized in a way that makes it easy to find specific art, so you'll want to download them all and look around.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
