Monstrous Races

$2.99

Whether you’re playing an all-monster party or just want to play a monstrous race in an otherwise normal party, this document presents rules for playing every creature in the Monster Manual, new feats and backgrounds for monstrous characters, analysis of officially published races, highly detailed rules for building your own races, new rules for tiny races, and rules for templates for player characters.

This supplement is for 5th-edition Dungeons and Dragons. Currently DM's Guild only allows community submissions for 5th edition.

What is in this document?

  • 228 playable races (every creature in the Monster Manual, no exceptions!)
  • 116 subraces
  • 13 templates for Player Characters, including new rules for Lycanthropes and Vampires
  • Design notes discussing how everything in the document was built and suggestions for changing everything to fit your game
  • Rules for Tiny, Large, Huge, and Gargantuan player races
  • 5 new feats
  • 3 new backgrounds
  • Analysis of all of the official published races with suggestions for ways to alter them
  • Extensive Race Builder rules for building your own races, including 2 new races designed from the ground up to show you how it works (Mongrelfolk, and Animated Tomes)
  • Template Builder rules for building your own templates for player characters
  • Includes both the full version of Monstrous Races and the Monstrous Races Compact Edition, a slimmed-down version of the document with a lot of the clutter removed to make it a great reference option on the go

Does that seem like a lot? It is! Are you still not sure? Take a look at the preview, which covers the first 20 pages of the document, including the rules for Tiny creatures and complete racial traits for 7 races.

Featured on KotakuVice, and the D&D Character Lab Podcast, a front-page post on /r/DnD/, and thanks to all of you fine folks, an Adamantine Best Seller on DM's Guild in less than 48 hours!

The template for Increased Size has the HD at 1d11 at level 1 then says 1d12. is this a typo?

Definitely a typo. I just uploaded an updated version of the file with corrected text.

Reading the Larger Players addendum.
The Carrying capacity for each size category says it is twice the carrying capacity of a medium creature of comparable strength. Is that intentional? or should each size have twice the carry capacity of the next size lower?

CREATOR
Thanks for spotting that. I meant for each size to have double the carrying capacity of the size beneath it, but in retrospect that's a terrible way to explain that. I've corrected the text and uploaded and updated version of the file.

Is there no Ghost race or am I missing something?

Unfortunately, the first version of the file for Monstrous Races had a number of major errors, including missing text for the ghost.

Please download a current copy of the file. I make routine periodic updates whenever I find errors in the files, and if you're still looking a version with no text for ghosts you're missing a big pile of other corrections, as well as some additional content which I added to the Race Builder based on the work I did for Monstrous Races 2.

Excellent work. I think there's an error with the air genasi though. In the Innate Spellcasting section of Appendix A it status that "an Air Genasi can cast Levitate (a 1st-level spell) at 3rd level." However, levitate is a 2nd level spell, and the genasi can cast it at 1st level. This also breaks the rule in the Innate Spellcasting table claiming that a race having the ability to cast "a spell 2 levels earlier than a primary spellcaster of the appropriate level" is "not allowed."

This error also affects the analysis of the air and earth genasi, as pass without trace is also a 2nd level spell available at 1st level. Recalculating the BP gives me 6 BP for each (assuming a level 2 spell available 2 levels early is only 2.5 BP). Still not stellar, but a little more viable as is.

A friend of my'ne gave me a copy of this and book 2 a little wile back, It's been extremely helpful in the making of a homebrew race I made, and has given me some ideas for some fucere content / caricter ideas for fucere games I play. I just wanted to say that since, due to the fact that I didn't buy the book myself I can't submit a proper reveaw. Worth every penny (even with inflated Canadian pricing)

I was tinkering a bit and trying to build an Ooze character when I noticed some oddness. In the main entry for Oozes you say the Movement is 30 Walking, but then for *every* sub-race you state the Movement is 20? Am I reading that wrong? It seems a bit inefficient to word it the way it is presently. Also, I noticed there aren't any Ability Score Increases for the Ochre Jelly and Gray Ooze. Also, how do you justify Oozes being able to speak but others, such as Animated Armor, Shield Guardian and Shadow cannot? I know you are trying to keep everything balanced according to the point-buy system you explain, but I think sometimes too much focus on balance breaks down.

Back to Oozes (or other Amorphous types), how about a Feat that would allow more control of their form to Entangle or form hands and other rough body parts.

I'm still a huge fan of your work, I just thought you might appreciate the feedback. :^)

Thank you so much for taking the time to point those out. You spotted several errors in the Ooze entry. The 30 ft. speed in the shared racial traits is an error; all of the ooze subraces have a 20 ft. walking speed, and some of them have a climb speed. The ability score increases are missing from the Gray Ooze (+2 Constitution) and the Oche Jelly (+1 Strength, +1 Constitution) entries, but they're detailed in the design notes. I'll correct those issues and post an updated file soon.

Regarding speech: If you look at the design notes throughout the book, I explain my reasoning for granting speech. Many creatures, including the ones you listed, are already intelligent and can't speak. I opted to retain that limitation to stay true to the original creatures. Creatures like oozes and most beasts are unintelligent, so I assume that they've been affected by something similar to the Awaken spell. Awaken grants the ability to speak, so I grant the ability to speak to those creatures. While the ability to speak...See more

The werewolf template's stats don't match with the design notes. For example (without giving extra information) you mention adding a proficiency to help bring it up to the other lycanthrope templates, but said proficiency isn't actually listed under the template.

As I've said previously on Monstrous Races 2, I love both of these supplements! But they don't seem to have been double (or triple) checked properly. The things that stood out to me in this one is an entire part missing under the Published Races part, in this case the Hobgoblin. It cuts off at "If you want to strengthen the hobgoblin," with the rest of that part missing. There might me other such things in the document, but this is the first thing I found while jumping back in forth while using it in writing an adventure.
Great stuff otherwise!

Would you double-check that you have the latest version of the file? It looks like I've already corrected that issue, but if it didn't make it into the version on DMsGuild I want to be sure to upload a corrected version.

Looks like the PDF preview is causing all sorts of problems lately, and I'm not certain why. I've attempted to regenerate the preview several times but it continues to cause errors.

I've emailed the DMsGuild support people, but their support guy is at Gencon for the next week so for the moment it looks like we're stuck.

The preview is actually only 8 pages. Includes a table of contents for just the preview, rules for adjusting build points for races based on size, and a small spell list with one spell. Certainly not what is listed in the description.

Sorry about that, folks. I just uploaded an updated version of the file, and DMsGuild's servers take a few minutes to update the download links with the new files. It should be working now. Also keep in mind that the product includes two files, so you may get best results by going directly to the product page (this page) and clicking the download links immediately beneath the "You Have Purchased This Product" text.

If that still doesn't work, please reply to me so I can get it sorted out as soon as possible. I'd hate for anyone to spend money on my work and not get what they paid for.

Hey there!
I signed up onto this site to purchase your product and I am also having the same issue, I cannot download it. There is no text under the 'you have purchased this' text. I'm not angry or upset about being unable to download it, but I am eager to read the PDF if you have any other means of delivering it aside from this page? I can provide proof of purchase if need be.
Thank you for your time!

Yo, will you be doing Montrous Races for the monsters in Volos and Mordenkainens?
Customer avatar
Tyler K July 18, 2018 1:41 pm UTC
CREATOR
Yes! I'm working on volume 2 right now, which will cover Volo's. I'm working on the Yuan-Ti Anathema right now, which is the very last thing I need to write to complete volume 3, then I'll do some editing and proofreading, and hopefully I'll have volume 2 out in the very near future. Once that's done I've got a couple small side projects I want to explore, then I'll move on to volume 3, which will cover Mordenkainen's.

Unfortunately, you're on your own for that. DMsGuild doesn't do print-on-demand (except for WotC-organized projects like Monsters of the Guild).

However, you're free to print products for your own use, so you could go to a local print shop and have it printed and bound.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
