Chapter 1 - Rodents of Unusual Size:The village of Ravenhome is plagued by a verocious rat army which feasts on the village's supplies and threatens the survival of the villagers. Venture into the caves beneath the hamlet to stop the onslaught on the ravaged village of Ravenhome. I don’t understand how the APL table at the front works. There seems to be some numbers missing unless I just can’t figure out how to read it. I have 3 1st level characters in my group. Does that mean they are “weak” because their apl is equal to 1 with three characters? Or is apl used in some other way I don’t understand? Thanks.

Hey, your party is considered very weak. Because not only is the number of members 3, the average level is also 1 which is less than 3. With this large of a discrepancy between the optimization and actual party you should be cautious with the encounters if the players are also new to D&D. When in doubt you can also always check the difficulty of a fight on this website: https://kobold.club/fight/#/encounter-builder

Also, I feel dumb for asking this, but are ALL the rats in town “...bands of rats can be spotted all across the village. Some bolt from opened windows with bulged cheeks, some are watching passers-by from the roofs...” giant rats? Or are some of them just your average size rats?

No, these are all normal rats. At least that's how I imagined it. But you can throw the odd giant rat in there ;) If you have more questions in general you can also make a list and send them to christian.eichhorn.dmg@gmail.com, that's easier for communication ;D

I've tried downloading the .zip file several times, and each time maps 2 and 3 come up blank, both the empty and notes version. Map 1 is fine.

Greetings, I just checked and there is no problem with the files attached. I assume that there may be a problem with your image viewer. The maps in question are png files with transparent background. Try downloading Gimp or ImageGlass and try to open the files with these programs. I assume you use Windows? It's also possible that the transparent png can't be viewed by other OS's but I don't think this is the case. If this should fail to fix the problem post your e-mail address here or send an e-mail to christian.eichhorn.dmg@gmail.com. Then I will send you jpg files with white background.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
