The Warrior

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Behold the warrior, the most adaptable martial class to ever swing an axe at a dragon. Through experience, the warrior develops skills with various sets of combat equipment, from the classic sword-and-board defender to the ferocious berserker and the enigmatic warrior of the open-hand style. Able to adapt to any circumstance, the warrior never misses a fight.

Fundamentally, the warrior is an adaptable, resourceful, and cunning fighter. Able to adapt their strategies, warriors rarely find themselves unable to contribute to a brawl. Over time, a warrior also gathers considerable social clout. They command the respect of their closest allies, eventually rule over a stronghold, and wield reputations on par with any noble.

Here's what's inside: the Warrior, a new core class designed around the idea that what you bring to a fight determines what you can do in a fight, and that changing your gear means changing the kind of warrior you are. Also, sixteen "Warrior Styles", each one allowing players to specialize in a specific fighting style: berserker, closed-fist, defender, destroyer, dual-wielder, duelist, guard, gunner, hunter, kensai, knight, machine-gunner, man-at-arms, open-hand, sharpshooter, and zealot. Over the course of your career, you will master many of these styles and will be able to switch between them in order to always bring your best to a fight!

So, I just decided to buy this. After seeing your clown class and absolutely loving it, along with the extra clown subclasses (5 stars given to all of them). It made me curious about your other products, and this class in particular peaked my interest. I'm always looking for non-magic classes, and this in particular gets me with it's versatility from having a whole bunch of subclasses available at once. It requires a little extra book keeping, but I think that's fine for the tradeoff of being able to switch what you can do. I also enjoy the slight callbacks to older editions of the fighter class in the stronghold mechanic.

The only things I think I'm unsure about is the HP mechanics and the cohort mechanics. The HP mechanics makes sense in principle, but I could see it getitng confusing for people who aren't super good with math. 5e tried to get away a way from modifiers to stats and rolls constantly, so I feel like having to change your max HP every time you change your battle stance is a bit too...See more

Hi Thony! Huge thanks for the review! I've actually landed on a few of the issues you mention (and a few more) and intend to release an update to the Warrior in the next few weeks.

In my experience, the HP "slider" is pretty easy to play with once you get the gist of it, but I can see what you're saying.

Fair criticism on the cohort, too. Players can hire NPCs that will do what a cohort will do, but a cohort is naturally very loyal, can carry more than other NPCs, and helps cement the Warrior's place in the RP environment - something that doesn't come naturally to most Fighters. That said, the language for Attract Cohort did get cleaned up a bit, including an option to go "solo" rather than have someone running alongside you banging two coconut shells together!

As for the copy-pasting, I think it's because I make these manually in Photoshop. I've just never really liked the way text looked when I've tried using the Homebrewery. Maybe there's a PS setting...See more

Took me a couple days to get to it, but I got to it.

So, first of all, I love the changes to the cohort. I like that it takes time and money to find one, and the comment about it being up to the DM what changes depending on how often you lose cohorts is great. Gives a lot more freedom of where the cohort comes from and that's great appreciated as a DM. I also love that there's now an option for people who don't want a cohort. For a class all about combat options, it's good this one has one.

I only have three problems with it at this point. First, you have 9nd level instead of 9th level. Might want to have an editor go through this extra carefully. Second, I don't quite understand what being a lone wolf is supposed to do. It says you act as if your banner is always visible. I assume this means 'even if you're not wearing it', which is good for those rare undercover moments or times you're without your stuff. But I think it could use a little clarification.

The arms to CR table...See more

Whoops! Yeah, that table was still busted. It's fixed now! I'm kind of a one-person operation, so some stuff gets missed no matter how many times you go through it. That table still being the copy-paste from the old version is kinda embarrassing, so thanks for the catch on that!

Lone Wolf... that just lets you take advantage of Warrior Banner and Warrior of Legend without others having to recognize your banner. Your confidence and presence is enough. I've added a note to the ability that says as much.

Other changes...
Battle Surge use limits clarified.
Open-Hand and Closed-Fist got nerfed a bit at AP 1.
Destroyer's Rolling Thunder got clarified.
Some of the Gunner's Specialty Slugs got buffed.

Thanks again, Thony! I'm glad you're liking the Warrior!

That chart makes much more sense, thank you. :P

Hmm, I feel like it could be clearer, still. 'Always visible' isn't the same as 'always recognized'. It would probably be better to say that being a lone wolf means you're treated as if everyone recognizes your banner through your sheet physical might.

And these other changes are appreciated. I love them all.

Hi Thony!

Thank you for the freelancing!

re: the Banner. That's by design. Going without a cohort carries certain logistical limits that other warriors don't have to deal with. One thing that cohorts can do is flash your Banner around, announcing your presence in all the RP situations your dumpstats can't properly navigate. Lone Wolves go without the cohort's services and RP utility, but not the ever-presence of a Banner. The power of the Banner rests in its recognition though, Lone Wolf or otherwise. The boon of the Lone Wolf is that they don't even have to present a Banner, and people who would otherwise recognize it still react as if the Banner were visible. They can have a much lower profile without losing their RP clout, but they're still limited to audiences who recognize the Banner.

I hope that makes sense, and thanks again for kicking the tires on this with me!

I bought this but cannot review it (anyone who knows this website knows how finicky it can be) so I figured I would drop a written 5 stars in the discussion. Rarely will you see this much content (and original artwork) in a doc so inexpensive. You can tell that ton of work goes into this and if you are familiar with the author's other classes you'll find the same attention to detail and the same flexibility within the class structure.

The fact that this sounds like a fighter just worries me too much to justify spending any money on it. The preview should show a *little* more, just so we know we aren't getting scammed into buying the fighter with minor tweaks.

Agreed! This is a totally different take on being a martial fighter in 5th edition. I've upped the preview to 3 pages, so you can see the class table and get a sense of how this works. I hope you give this class a shot, Black B. Cheers!

Now that I've seen a bit more of the preview, I actually am interested in the class. Thank you for expanding the preview! I plan on purchasing this in just a day or two, and will leave a rating once I've done so.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
