Danger In A Midwinter Wonderland: A Christmas One-Shot

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Adventure to the Noel Isles to save the Winter's Father from the clutches of the nefarious Krampus!

Danger in Midwinter Wonderland is a single session Christmas adventure suitable for a party of 3-5 players of 4th or 5th level but is best with 4 5th level players. It is easy to play as a one-shot adventure with new characters or to place into an already existing campaign.

This adventure also includes Christmas themed magic items like the Exploding Midwinter Crackers and has stats for a number of new monsters including the fearsome Snoman and the deadly Krampus.

Everyone has heard of the festival of Midwinter, the great Winter's Father and his dutiful Toy Makers. They are the core of the Midwinter celebrations and there is no better place to visit than the Noel Isles and see the Winter's Father in person during these celebrations. Each year the Toy Makers decorate the Isles with such splendour that it can only be fully appreciated in person.

But this year something foul is afoot, the Winter's Father is missing and the Noel Isles are too quiet. Something is definitely wrong but you're not quite sure what. All you know is that you sense Danger, in this Midwinter Wonderland.

Update 2. The addition of a map of the Noel Ises. Formatting improvements. Design improvements.

Update 1.1 - Correction of spelling and grammatical errors.

does this adventure has any horror theme vibe? I get some of this vibe for its name but I the description doesn't seem like it. I'm thinking about adding it as a christmas one shot during my WbTW campaign. They just got to Thither after going to Neverland for a couple of days, so I thought it was a good opportunity. Does the adventure offer any suggested plot hook for on going adventures?

Hi Gustavo,

There is a mild horror vibe to the adventure (with Krampus being the end fight) that can either be amped up if you want more horror or ignored if you would prefer no horror. There are also three short adventure hooks included in the adventure that can be adapted to fit into an already running campaign.

Really want to buy this one, does it include maps by any chance?

Hi Demetrio, unfortunately there are no battle maps but the locations where combat takes place are simple enough that theatre of the mind works great but equally custom battle maps shouldn't take long to put together.

Bought this for one of my players for him to run as his fist time DM'ing.

The story is good, and can easily be adapted to fit different groups and it's not hard to pull the players in.

Most encounters are good IMO. The toymakers are not much of a threat and fun to mow down, we ended up thinking of them as the purple minions, as they were played very "feral"
The snoman was a good challenge that included a toymaker turning mid battle.
The orcs were not much of a threat but can still take a bit of the party's power away before the big fight which was great.

The final fight however seems very mismatched, especially if run by an inexperienced DM. Cone of cold took out half the party instantly and with the krampus constant radiating cold damage and triple attacks coupled with limited healing capabilities at 5th lvl with no cleric in the party of 4 ppl, a TPK was inevitable.

The cone of cold is definitely within the theme of the adventure...See more

Just ran this. It was fun overall, my advice after running it would be to probably summarize the read aloud text, and to adjust some encounters. I ran this for 5 level 5 pcs. The Turned Toy Makers almost never landed an attack, the Snoman proved a formidable opponent but they beat it, and then took a long rest. The orcs only damaged one character, and the end fight was a tpk. I'd suggest balancing the encounters accordingly with this info.

Hey! Did you have a bad spread of classes amongst the party? I just ran this for a group of 6 and didn't have as much bother. :)

I just bought this and read through the scenario and am working out all the logistics for a playthrough. As a fairly new DM, I just wanted to know how a group of 4 or even 5 players at level 5 are supposed to beat the Krampus and the Warlock of Krampus, let alone at the same time. Any help would be great.

Hi! I've just finished running this for a group of my friends - there were 6 of us at 5th level but they managed ok to beat Krampus and the warlock at the same time. But we did get some lucky rolls I'm sure and had a good party balance. Feel free to give me a shout if you need any help balancing!

Hello! Really excited by this! How many hours-ish does this run? We usually play 3ish, but could go to 4, or wondering if I should put it over 2 weeks?

Hi Fennella,

You could probably finish it in 4 depending on how long your party look around at the start. The encounter in the woods is randomly generated so is skippable if you're running short on time.

Hope this helps. Enjoy playing!

Hi Anthony,
The solution for the puzzle is in the section of the adventure titled 'Silent Knight, Holy Knight Puzzle'. To solve the puzzle the players must light all the sconces in the room. Hope that helps.

Hi Diego, apologies for the delayed reply unfortunately I don't have maps for those locations as I am also terrible at drawing maps. I decided to exclude any as well to make the exact layout of these areas up for interpretation for each DM. Thanks. Asa.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
