The Expedition of the Magi: A Christmas Tale from the Forgotten Realms (5e)

Saddle up your camel and fill your waterskins! Players are headed into the desert at the behest of three star-seeking sages in search of gifts fit for a king.

The Expedition of the Magi is a standalone adventure for 2-6 first level characters. It uses 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons rules and may be run with basic rules. It is intended to be accessible to new players and dungeon masters, while throwing enough novel encounters at the players to keep the grognards entertained.

It features:

  • 10 statblocks (5 all new creatures, 2 modifications, 3 old stalwarts)
  • 1 new potion, that can get you into a sticky spot and may even get you out
  • Wrestling mummies and undead cats
  • A physics defying meteor
  • A lost, bored sphinx
  • Almost every first level trope in the book, including abandoned towers, rats in dark basements, caravan guards, attacks on livestock and meeting in an inn a caravanserai
  • Sand, your choice of coarse, rough or irritating
  • Grid paper, just in case

This title was something of a disappointment. It's very short - as befits what would likely be run as a single session one-shot - but just because it's a quick read doesn't make the lack of any kind of adventure overview at the beginning [...]

It's a clever premise for a Christmas-themed adventure. The opening and the first part of the quest are well-laid-out and interesting, but the second two encounters are lacking. It made the ending feel rushed with how quickly the players were able to [...]

This was a very imaginative adventure. If you would like to do something over-the-top that will widen eyes around the table, this is great for that. This is, after all, a Christmas adventure in the world of dungeons and dragons; if you're willing to [...]

The adventure was good, but it wasn't my style, so I had to rewrite a little bit. Don't get me wrong, this adventure is really well-done, I just don't feel like it deserves 5 stars. [...]

I was looking for a short Christmas themed adventure to do on New Years Eve for my DND groups, and this was a well rated one. I'm glad I picked it because it was perfect for new to low levels, it was long enough for one night, and it changed up the num [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
