The Nutcracker, a retelling

ADD TO WISHLIST >

At the Royal Christmas Eve party, the Queen is kidnapped by the evil Mouse King, and our adventurers are sent to rescue her. Into the mouse-hole your adventurers will go, where it leads, no-one knows.

A 2020 GOLD Best Seller. Wow, thank you all so much!!

This is a Christmas themed mini-adventure based on the Classic story and ballet The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas tale of magic, mystery, and sugar plums, and I have re-written this 1816 German story by E.T.A Hoffman for a 51-page level 5 5e D&D adventure, that runs over 3-4 hours.

**Updated in 2018 to include**

* Images from the DMsGuild Creator Resources and Adobe Christmas Stock Art

* 7 new redesigned pre-generated characters featuring official 5e source material

* Gorgeous maps to print out

* New and improved Mouse King Monster Stats

Hi! This looks like a fun adventure, looking forward to running it!
Are there any hi-res versions of the maps available? I want to print at 11"x17" for my players and I can't scale it due to the editing protection placed on the PDF. It also prevents editing of the character sheets and other useful things (such as imposing it to print as a booklet).

I can attempt to separate the maps from the PDF and update as extra jpgs. I am worried about the quality as I lost the originals in a blue screen of doom and only have the PDF save here. I will try though!

Is there a reason that for the warlock pre-gen you've decided to put a lot of points into WIS? Warlocks casting stat is CHA so I'm not sure why there's so many points being put into WIS. I'm just trying to make sure I understand these characters before I let my players run wild with them.

How easy would this adventure be to adapt to a smaller party? I can adjust encounters just fine, but the contents of the preview make me worry about whether or not there might be other considerations that necessitate the five characters provided, haha.

Hi Hanna
If you're fine with adjusting encounters then it should be ok. I would suggest maybe picking one or two pre gen to become a helpful NPC (Esp. for the boss fight and depending on the party size you have in mind). Each pre-gen has a specific hook that ties them to the tale, but that's more for flavour. If you're experienced with running DnD and one shots then it should be easy

Have the maps been translated to roll20 or some other flat medium? I wanted to run this online.

Hi!

They have not. This is because I do not know how to do that, and do not use Roll20 myself. It is something I am happy to research but I probably won't get a chance until after the festive season.

My fault for not verifying ahead of time. This would be a great addition, but I don't know that there is an easy way to do that without recreating the maps.

Congratulation on writing your first adventure ... never an easy feat and one you should be proud of :)

Just as a point of reference. You should never rely on another to pick up your, I assume, self-editing mistakes and submit them back to you. Always try to get another person to look at your work and find those mistakes before publication. Where possible, try to use an independent editor and proofreader. I'm aware that you have placed this within the guild as PWYW but you are asking people to donate to your work and are therefore getting paid. Once you are getting paid for your work, paying to have someone to edit your work should be a major consideration. Some of us that do editing for the guild do not charge professional over the top editing prices to get work edited (and in nearly all cases I believe we do a better job for the money spent). Something to consider.

As for PWYW, at 42 pages, you should have placed a $$$ on this, even if it was $US1. At PWYW, all those free downloads...See more

Hi Ken,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave some helpful comments for me. I've never written/done anything like this before, and so I will definitely take them under advisement. I will look at the changing the price as well.

I hope to write more adventures this coming year so I will look into getting a someone to proof them for me.

Thank you again,

Anjuli

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
