Dark Sorceries - A 5E Solo Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

All conversation abruptly stops as the door to the inn crashes open. A cloaked figure staggers into the room, falling to his knees. The stranger looks human, though his cowl is pulled low, hiding his features from sight. His clothes are covered in frost and fresh snow.

“P-please… h-help… m-me...,” a strangled voice pleads from under the hood. Pain and desperation are evident in the man’s voice.

What do you do?

If you are looking for a thrilling adventure set in the Forgotten Realms, look no further! Dark Sorceries is a 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons Solo Adventure, inspired by Paul Bimler’s “The Death Knight’s Squire” and is the first chapter in the Heroes of Faerun: Shadowborne campaign (a series of custom adventures designed for solo play). This adventure takes 2-4 hours to play, and is designed to take a 2nd-level character all the way to 3rd-level. While this adventure is designed for solo play, it can be easily tailored to work with any gaming group.

Dark Sorceries reads like a “choose your own adventure” book, where choices are presented to the player, and the player chooses a response from among those choices to progress through the story.

The adventure is written with a gripping and dramatic narrative, combining a multitude of different responses that will impact NPC attitudes and outcomes in the story. You will fight monsters, you will create allies, and you will come face to face with creatures birthed from dark sorcery.

You will need the 5E Basic Rules (PHB and DMG recommended) in order to play, a printer or a virtual tabletop for displaying the hand-drawn maps, and tokens or minis to help keep track of the tactical combat encounters.

So grab some snacks, put on your favorite adventuring music, and dive in! Adventurers needed, Dungeon Masters not required!

Greetings! After getting into gamebooks the past few years, I decided to look into the possibility of solo modules like these to get back into D&D (which I haven't played since AD&D back in the 90's). I was planning on picking up a Players Handbook. I did not however have any plans to pick up the Dungeon Masters Guide. I was never a good Dungeon Master so it seems a pointless reference for someone like me to have, not to mention an expense that could be used on something more useful like Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything or even the Monster Manual.

So I was wondering how important it is to have the DMG in order to play this adventure series?

Unfortunately I do not have a timeline for when the next chapter will be released. I am not satisfied with the progress or the direction that it was taking, and am in the process of reworking it to meet my (and my fans) expectations. I do intend to release the next installment when it is ready, and hope that you are looking forward to it. Thanks!

Can this be ran with a DM and one player?

Hi Richard, yes this can be run with a DM and one player. You should familiarize yourself with the adventure book ahead of time to understand the flow of the narrative and make any adjustments you might want for improvisation, or you can stick to the script and help guide the new player with the choices offered in the choose-your-own-adventure style approach.

Hi Ginette, were you able to download the files yet? I was not able to reproduce your issue, and I am able to download them without issue. If you are still having issues, please send me your email address and I will email you all the files for each adventure.

G'day... Am in the middle of this adventure and enjoying it so far. Just one issue I have noticed, during the combat re: the tavern and Xefna, the tactics for Davian say "The halfling bard will yelp and run for cover (using the Disengage action when necessary), attempting to keep himself distanced from any targets that close to melee range"...... This tactic doesn't make sense to me as the disengage action only prevents opportunity attacks and will not prevent the bandit from following him and attacking. So Davian would end up just running around the room getting attacked until dead...... I am new at this and my interpretation could be wrong so apologize in advance if I am incorrect?

We just replayed this, so it's fresh in my memory: the half-ghoul focuses its attacks on you ("ignores the villagers until you are dead"). So it wouldn't chase Davian once the halfling disengages.

HA! I apologize for this - I was thinking of the FIRST encounter in the Inn, not the second. You're right; in the second fight, the bandit with the club will chase after Davian...until Davian and/or you defeat him. At that point, Davian's tactic becomes a lot more effective to assist the two other combatants (or several, if you're running the module in group play). Note, too, that Davian can disengage and move so that the club bandit may have to move adjacent to an ally to get to him, so that opportunity attacks can finish off the bandit faster.

Hi Shayne, Harold is absolutely right. Davian would likely run towards another hero and avoid an attack by the taking cover near an ally. Hope this clears things up! I'm glad you are enjoying the adventure!

Hey Abel, how you going! Flattered that you've used my adventure as inspiration, and it looks great. I've put a link to it on my 5e Solo Adventures page on Facebook so that might generate a few sales for you. As soon as I've finished the millionth edit of "Tyrant of Zhentil Keep" (my new solo, due out next week!) I'm going to buy this and play through. Well done, and from the little snippet you've provided, the writing looks solid. All the best.

Paul B.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
