The Lingering Soul

An Optional Class or Death Alternative for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

Mortality. All who draw breath fear the icy grip of death, the promised end. It is the primal fear that drives much of history, and the promise of a restful afterlife brings weight to the influence of any temple.

Your afterlife, unfortunately, is not so restful. You’ve been cut down, left to die, and your spirit now remains, unable to pass on when so filled with fear, with anger, with questions. Binding to whatever symbol will anchor you to the world of the living, you feel the hunger for answers rival your need for vengeance as you learn to control this ethereal existence thrust upon you.

With the aid of still-living allies, you continue the pursuit of your goals using your spectral gifts to frighten, manipulate, and control those who would stand in your way. Leaping from body to body, wrestling control from your foes as you send them to a worser fate than yours, you continue to fight for another chance at life... or embrace your ghostly talents to do what living mortals cannot, ever fighting the cold and hungry urges that encompass the curse of undeath.

This is a complicated class the DM can offer as a choice upon character creation, or offered by the DM when a player character death is surrounded by enough violence or mystery to cause the soul to cling to the mortal world. It can allow the continued play of a beloved character when resurrection is unavailable, or as a reward for a party seeking to restore the narrative lost when a central figure has fallen. Players should not be able to select to become a Lingering Soul upon death; it should be offered with good reason, and it should be an option granted sparingly.

v1.1 Update

  • Fixed a number of spelling and usage mistakes!
  • Tied Secondary Saving Throws to your Phantom Calling choice for balance.
  • Clarified that Spirit Binding is indefinite once bound, only changing when the bound creature or object is destroyed.
  • Added clarification on some rules regarding Consume Enchantment.
  • Added clarification on when Pervade the Fallen ends and destroys the corpse.
  • Replaced lvl 19 Spectral Transformation with the standard Ability Score Improvement and added it as a Spirit Guardian lvl 15 ability.
  • Altered "Ravage Soul" for balance purposes (closer to as intended).
  • Adjusted damage on the Wraith's Scything Claw.
  • Lessened the Spirit Guardian's Savior Spirit aura to balance with having a new lvl 15 Ability.

So I have managed to get my hands on the hex spell without needing material components. my question is: if i made a possessed creature attack the hexed creature, would it apply?

My initial guess is no but i'm not sure

Is the pdf copy/pastable? When I get it, I'd love to port it in as a homebrew class for usage on D&D Beyond.

From what I can read of the Wraith's 15th level ability, it seems very strong. Does the specter of the creature keep its own stats? Because then it would be very beneficial for our party to murder some powerful mages and have a ghost squad of powerful magicians at our beg and call. Did I misunderstand something?

Is there any chance to get some form of editable (copy-pastable) version?
I love (and really need) the lingering soul for my next session, but I need to edit some names and couple of details to fit better with things that previously happened in the campaign. In current form I can't even copy the text out of pdf to add to character sheets or anything like that.
Many thanks!

*nods* it must have come up in conversation... considering Blood Hunter, it would be poetic.

question, if i possess a creature and an opponent is 30 feet away would i still be able to attack the opponent?

An odd question, but are Natural weapons such as the ones that Tabaxi and Aarakocra gain, able to be used by the Lingering soul, or does their incorporeality prevent them from inflicting wounds with these attacks.

Matthew, my DM has presented this class as a possible option to play after my PC died (damn succubus). I was wondering what you feeling would be on if you absorbed the power of a healing potion as one of the 5 enhancements you can consume?

That probably wouldn't work, as healing potions are specified as non-magical items and aren't enchanted.

Thanks for this Matthew! This looks super cool! Do you think this would make a good class for a ghost that is possessing a PC?

Mathew I love your work and I am absolutely loving the second campaign, so I have a question about possession. When the Lingering Soul forces their host to take the attack action do they use the host's attack stats or is it a straight d20 roll?

The host is making the attack, so it would use the host's attack/damage stats. :)

Hey Matt, love the class. Quick question for you. Since it is stated that the player retains their racial features when they become a Lingering Soul, how does that interact with races that have natural armor like Lizardfolk, or even heavier stuff like Tortle's natural AC 17?

For the Natural Armor, I could say that the spirit has a denser energy that is more resistant to attacks, or in the instance of the Tortle, you would say that it haunts the hollowed-out shell of it's former body.

Awesome, thank you! Can't wait to spring that shell idea on my Tortle player should they ever die *evil grin*

Hey Matt, got a question! I have a fellow PC playing your class and is spiritually bound to another PC's ring. In combat, my PC was possessed by the lingering soul when I had Banishment successfully casted on me. What happens to the Lingering Soul? Thanks in advance!

In this instance, the Lingering Soul would remain behind, being left where the banished host once stood.

Can i use weapon ? Cause it say that i cant carry equipment but it also say that i have a simple weapon and i can une absorbed enchantment on weapon attack...so can carry stuff like weapon or not ?

Under starting equipment it states you get the listed items "though carrying this equipment may prove difficult without aid".
As for attacks, and weapon enchantments you have absorbed, it depends on what archetype or "Phantom Calling" you chose as to how those attacks are carried out.
Poltergeist can just equip and use weapons as normal, as well as use them as ranged attacks by throwing them via Haunt.
Wraiths get a Scything Claw attack as a melee attack.
Spirit Guardians seem more focused on buffing others, and as such do not seem to have a melee attack in and of themselves, but instead can buff their allies abilities (although I assume these buffs would not include any weapon enchantments you absorbed).

Fantastic class with a lot of exciting possibilities! Quick question: Does forcing a possessed creature to take one of the specified actions use that creature's action, thereby preventing it from otherwise using its action to do something else?

I ask because the relevant paragraph states, "A possessed creature acts as normal on its turn." However, it also says, "You can instead use your action to force the possessed creature to Dash in a direction of your choice, or TAKE THE DODGE ACTION." (Emphasis added.)

I read the possession ability as allowing a forced (free) action that is independent of the possessed creature's own, normally available action. Yet the emphasized language above arguably suggests otherwise.

Additional questions: Is the Lingering Soul capable of casting spells (such as via the Magic Initiate or Ritual Caster feats)? If so, can the Lingering Soul cast such spells while possessing a willing host?
Customer avatar
Matthew M April 24, 2018 1:37 am UTC
CREATOR
No worries! It does NOT take up or prevent the host from using their action. You are effectively giving them an additional action to do any of those specific things.

As for casting spells, I imagine you could (so long as the spell didn't have any material components)

Just wondering since you don't truly have a physical presence do you still gain the benefits of Natural Armor if you are playing a Lizardfolk

In this case, I could make a case for your spiritual essence being more sturdy than other spirits, so yes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
