5e Oriental Adventures (Reference)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Version 2.0 features:

  • A conversion of all Oriental Adventure content in the history of D&D (400 pages+).
  • All this content is playtested to one degree or another.
  • Lots of new content inspired by more modern sources – like anime, video games and movies. For example, a Stand User style class inspired by Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and a Battle-Construct style class inspired by Alita: Battle Angel.
  • 3 new races – Korobokuru, Hengeyokai and Spirit Folk
  • New Class – The Oiran who uses her charm and skill in etiquette, song and dance to enhance her party and curse her enemies.
  • 22 new archetypes.
  • 250+ monsters.
  • 100+ spells.
  • Dozens of magic items and special Oriental Adventures artifacts (tsukumogami).

As well as all supporting rules to run a game in the Far East (or West, I don’t know how your world works).

The intent of this work is to be a reference – to allow DM’s and other creators – to quickly spin up an Oriental Adventure campaign or a new (probably much fancier) sourcebook.

For anyone interested in seeing some of the progress, feel free to check out my post here:

https://www.electric-rain.net/2024/02/23/5e-oriental-adventures-2-4/

As I said, this is a labour of love, not my full-time job. There is no ETA on when it will be complete, but I am working on it.

Do you have the complete pdf that maybe you failed to upload? What i received after purchase was short of what is advertised. You say 460 pages of content. The document is only 450 pages. You says 100+ new spells. I counted 69 spells. You says 23 classes. I guess you mean subclasses. Of which, you have 22. You say 350+ new monsters. I counted 269 monsters. I could have miscounted some, but i definitely didn't miscount by 100.
And besides all that, these subclasses seem like half-baked first drafts, not play tested in the slightest. For example, the Komainu Rager (Barbarian subclass) has a 3rd level feature that says "Your hybrid form becomes much more effective in combat." There is no previous or further explanation of what this means. Does this mean only Hengeyokai can be this subclass? Does it mean this barbarian transforms into a hybrid animal when they rage? Another example, the Sohei paladin subclass lists oath spells you receive at various levels. All but one of those spells is missing...See more

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for your feedback. Can I confirm you downloaded the latest version, which is 2.22?

 You say 460 pages of content. The document is only 450 pages. --> This is because the blurb refers to version 1.0; since then, there have been 12 updates to this product, which includes layout improvements that shrink the page count but did not shrink the content. Blurb updated.

 You says 100+ new spells. I counted 69 spells. --> Not sure how you got 69. It seems like you just counted the wu-jen spells and didn’t add the shaman, sohei, shukenja, and new ranger spells in the count. Fair call on the sohei, miss on my part. I will add them in version 2.4.

 You says 23 classes. I guess you mean subclasses. Of which, you have 22. --> correct. Will update. In 3e, these were full classes and prestige classes. Archetypes is the correct term for 5e. Blurb fixed.

 You say 350+ new monsters. I counted 269 monsters -->...See more

Nah, I wouldn't even say the setting is the focus; setting information is incidental (you get a lot indirectly through class and monster descriptions); it's mainly a mechanics book. It's essentially a complete conversion of every officially published OA content up to 4e and then some. Including monsters from the adventures published in the 80s. So you could take the 80s adventure and play it with this reference book.

I did use this to run an Adventure Path, for which you can find a game log and notes on my blog. I used the Paizo Jade Regent Adventure Path as the bones of the campaign but cut out all the non-Asiatic content (that Adventure Path starts in The West and moves East; I just played it on all in Kara-Tur).

Yep, I used these rules to run a level 1 to 20 campaign over two years. I had an average of 8 PCs over those two years, and each played one of the archetypes from this sourcebook, so plenty of feedback/adjustments through playtesting. The two classes that got the most changed about them from idea to final version were the kensai and the geisha. Here is a brief outline of the campaign I ran if interested:

PCs were the retainers of a deposed child-king. His family had been assassinated, and a pretender had taken the throne. So initial adventures were just the PCs trying to protect the prince and survive. When we got to mid-levels, the PCs started forming alliances with different factions and fomenting a revolt (ninjas, geisha, bandits/rebellious warlords etc.) This included the geisha entering a political marriage with the equivalent of Genghis Khan so his armies could help liberate "mythic Japan". They eventually assaulted the usurper's palace while their armies besieged the equivalent...See more

Oh, small request if you have the time - do you think you could add some bookmarks for the Bestiary entries? Currently there's only a single bookmark for the start of the Bestiary section but it's a very big chapter of the document which means I can't easily go back and forth between entries while looking for things to use.

Typo, I think. 2.21 version - Wu Jen

MYSTICAL TABOOS
To maintain their supernatural power, and because culture and tradition dictate it, wu-jen must abide by certain
taboos that might seem inconsequential to other characters but are vitally important to the wu-jen. You must choose
at least 1 taboo at 3rd level when you take this arcane tradition.
===============
shouldn't that be 2nd level as this is a wizard Arcane Tradition?

Oh! I found an error and need some clarification too.

Regarding the Oiran class, there's a sentence that cuts off partway through ("When picking a song, you have the option of permanently converting it into a dance. This means allies").
Additionally, the 10th level feature says, "A spell you choose must be of a level lower in spell levels than you known song number, as shown on the Oiran table, or a cantrip." - but the Oiran table does not feature a "Known Song" column. It only has the proficiency bonus and "Ki".

Nice catch! First one was cut and paste error I guess, second one was how the previous version worked but play testing showed the new method was more fun (use any song you like). I fixed both and will update it to version v2.2 today.

Great to know! I definitely enjoy the concept of the class, that's for sure. I wound up spending a rather lengthy amount of time yesterday re-writing it into the more mechanical language of 5e to get it all easy-to-understand and internally consistent, while preserving the general way it worked. I think I did a good job at it - which was only possible because while rough around the edges, the intention was clear as day even if the exact language wasn't! :D

There was something else I noticed, incidentally - one of the songs (Hymn of Healing) has an ability that consumed 20 ki to resurrect a creature, but the Oiran class only has up to 10 Ki with no class or subclass features that extend this.

EDIT: Oh - actually, one minor thing for now (until I read through the rest) - the v2.2 doc doesn't have bookmarks like v2 :P

grr, let me fix that and upload 2.21. Oiran was the most modified class from its original version, so it changed the most over the 2 years of play (Kansai, surprisingly, was second most updated). You get to the point where you stop seeing your own errors, thanks for pointing it out. Will fix!

No worries, I fully understand the sensation, having been making and running homebrew for my own games over the same period. Flicking through a lot of it there's definitely more room for me to give feedback on game language and the like but I wouldn't want to bore you with making constant incremental updates - and besides, as mentioned, the intention is clear to see so using it as intended as a reference to remake and reinterpret works just fine as well! :)

Hi Jason, this version has a lot of Rokugan content. I am working on an updated version as well. By print do you mean print-on-demand? I don't have enough sales to have that option unlocked, unfortunately.

For the updated version I have converted in some fashion every single OA adventure/setting from AD&D 1e, 2e, 3e and even 4e. I may have missed some of the Dungeon Magazine stuff but otherwise, it should all be there. It's all been compiled and I am in the middle of editing it to make it a bit more readable. I expect to finish it and publish it early Jan.

Having said that, its a 500-page document and I will be charging more for it, though anyone who bought the original here will automatically get it for free as of version 2.0.

Would love to see the stream too, my contact is in the file if you could email me the details. FYI I am 3/4 of the way through a rewrite of this document, just editing it now to make sure it's readable. It weighs in at 500 pages - most of that are monsters. v2.0 has been fully playtested as well and I give advice on how I use various monsters and classes in my OA campaign which finished up in June after 18 months. But, realistically, I am still a month or two before I can release it as an update here. Editing is time-consuming.

Thanks Tristan. Version 2.0 is a WIP in progress since I am play testing it with my group in a 1 to 20 Oriental Adventure campaign. We are about half-way through so looking at another six months at this stage. If really keen I am posting to my blog the monsters/updates being made and this will form the basis of the v2.0. No idea on price - more than 99c but less than $10 assuming I don't commission any art for it.

Hi Iain, indeed! Draft is complete. My biggest hurdle is play testing. My PCs are now level 17 and I won't do a final version until the campaign is over - level 20+. So soon but not yet. Having said that everything that will be in the PDF is on the blog now and there is enough information there - classes, spells, skills, feats, monsters etc - to start a OA campaign.

Here is the index for the OA stuff:

It seems like a good start for someone doing Oriental Adventures in 5E. I was disappointed in the Monster section though, as for many of the monsters you are only provided with guidance in how to create them instead of stat blocks. Kami, Oni, Ghosts, T'uen-Rin, Kappa, Kami, Dragons, Bakemono for example. Also it would have been nice to have some sample villains, vs just a section on how to adapt DMG characters to them. For the price, though, it certainly isn't bad.

Fair points! I plan on revamping this once my playtesting is complete (which is going to take six months since I am running a campaign using these rules). By the end of that campaign, there will be a ton of monsters, villains etc. You can follow along by checking out the blog linked in the reference doc but everything posted is "beta" until I finalise it for a version 2.0 of these rules.

I love the OA setting so happy to keep banging away at it until its perfect. I just don't like to make updates without testing them as that provides the best feedback loop of what works and what doesnt.

Why do some of the races have stat penalties? That seems to be contrary to 5e design standards.
Same thing with class alignment restrictions. Paladins don't even have alignment requirements anymore.

It's a straight-up conversion, didn't really pass it through a 5e lens too strongly. Having said that, I am actually playtesting this material as we speak with 6 players running an Oriental based campaign from level 1 to 20. Rewrites have already occurred to this original so expect a more robust version that makes more sense in a 5e context in about six months.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
