Magical Supplement - Master Runes and their Applications

When Wizards of the Coast released their Unearthed Arcana about the Rune Scribe Prestige Class, I was really interested, enough that I was quite disappointed that there were only four Master Runes available and not much mention of anything like Minor Runes.

So I took it upon myself to create a few more, initially following the elemental theme that WotC began with, and then expanding into some others as process went on.

Since releasing the initial version of this document, I've had a small amount of feedback, which has been enough to kickstart a thorough rework. Version two is currently available with the following alterations:

  • Adjusted the way Runes work, removing the "Complex Properties" and simply adding bonuses to a number of the Basic abilities of each rune to enhance them with a Spell Slot.
  • Incorporated the method from the Storm King's Thunder expansion which allows Runic energy to be permanently transferred to an item, such as a weapon or piece of armour, while destorying the Rune. I've standardised the usable items to a standard set, for simplicity and variety.
  • Adjusted the Rune Scribe Prestige Class to work better with the adjusted mechanics.
  • Added an Arcane Tradition for the Wizard to allow for usage in campaigns where the players or DMs might not want to include Prestige Classes.
  • Rearranged the document slightly to put the rules and runes at the start, with the Rune Scribe options at the back.

As before, any feedback is welcome and encouraged, especially from previous commenters.

Bear in mind when downloading, this is a pretty significant rework rather than an update, so it might be worth keeping it separate from the first version until you know which version will work best for your campaign and players.

V. 2.2 - Fixed a layout issue where some of the runes were shunted onto additional pages, because of an extra line at the start of one entry. // Adjusted the effects of the Stahl Rune so that it can remain more useful at later levels, or worth using at all for the newly released updated Artificer Class.

I am sure this was not intentional, but I feel the need to comment this;

The Valknut (3 triangle symbol in the cover image) has been widely appropriated by White Nationalists and Nazis over the past decade.

There's an obvious (and valid) argument that we shouldn't allow them to claim an ancient symbol just because they want to. But it is (very unfortunately) already spread widely enough that when I saw this cover image here on dmsguild, my first reaction was "Oh XXX, there's some nazi XXX in here, XXX?".

Do with that information what you will, but I thought it worth mentioning in case this was simply a blind spot.

Fortunately, your first impulse wasn't accurate. I have never and will never support white nationalism, or any other movement that tries to lord themselves over others, especially by trying to degrade those other groups.
That I missed the connotations I will attribute to a lack of exposure to that particular brand of bullshit and inescurity and I'll take the advice inferred by your comment and look for something to swap the valknut for.

All that being said, if you did download the document as well, I hope you found something worth your time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
