The Boneyard

The Boneyard title

"Another interesting one-shot is 'The Boneyard' by Adam Hancock. Instead of collecting adventurers together for the first time, 'The Boneyard' assumes that the players are members of an old adventuring party that re-unite once a year to remember a fallen friend. However, the graveyard that their friend is buried in was damaged in an earthquake, and now the dead are returning as zombies for an unknown reason. Players have to find the cause of the recent undead outbreak, and possibly confront their fallen friend in the first place."

Mallory Dowd

"The Boneyard is a great adventure for low level parties, especially with new DMs. It has mystery, and is well-written and easy to follow. In addition to that, it delivers on its promise of flavorful and interwoven storylines, leaving the narrative open for exploration and play beyond what is presented...."

Valos was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the priest, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Even you’ve signed it. Yes, Old Valos was as dead as a door-nail….

The Boneyard is a 3- to 4-hour adventure for characters levels 1st to 4th. It features a flavorful setting, memorable roleplaying, oddball and depraved NPCs, interwoven storylines, and macabre combat encounters! The adventure also includes 3 new NPC stat blocks.

When darkness falls and the iron gates close behind you, the dead come out to play!

Storyline issue: the PCs supposedly have been coming to this graveyard for more than one year, and Drel has tended it for decades, yet in the intro, he distrusts these "strangers"(p3). Simple modification that he finds any excuse he can to make anyone go away, even "regulars."

When I opened this using Adobe Acrobat, on page 4 the last line for the "Zombies" random encounter is off the page. Appears to be 2 lines (If...)

Two recommendations: incorporate suggestions for a map (even if a simple line "draw for your players a small graveyard with a mausoleum, temple outside the fence..") to give players more of a feel for freedom of where to go, and change the "Redbrand Ruffian" to something from the Monster Manual as not everyone may have the "Lost Mines" starter set adventure.

Otherwise, looks great and I look forward to running this!

I had this issue as well. The printer friendly version has the full text: it just says "If the party is level 3 or higher, increase the number of zombies to 2d6"

Any suggestions for running the game for higher level characters? Say Tier 3?

That would require a lot of work. Instead, I recommend "The Dead Wedding" for a similarly themed adventure at that level.

Anyone have any pointers/suggestions for a (battle) map to use for this? Any links/thoughts would be appreciated!

Why is the text all garbled on my download?

Hi, Joel. Sorry the download didn't work. I just did a test download on my laptop and everything looks fine here. I'll ask technical support to look into it.

Technical support got back to me and said they see no problem on their end. They asked that you contact them directly by clicking on the 'Contact Us' button in the lower left corner.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
