DDAL07-06 Fester and Burn (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The denizens of the Old City have made some unusual sightings in the festering refuse pits on the outskirts of the city, and while such reports are seldom taken terribly seriously, the mysterious disappearance of a beloved figure in the poor part of Port Nyanzaru has folks on edge.

Can you get to the bottom of this?

Part One of The Rot from Within Trilogy.

Note: Also included in the purchase of this adventure is a version specially converted .mod file for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The converted adventure features all the text and maps from the original adventure along with cross-linking of monsters, spells, magic items, equipment, and story elements, plus the powerful rules automation for which Fantasy Grounds is known.

I ran this one right beside DDAL07-07

and it was the most fun I've ever had playing adventures league, well written this is a great one

The enemy hit hard, the adventure is intriguing but too the point, plenty of room for some role play and exploration

I have downloaded CERT-DDAL07-06_Fester_and_Burn.pdf twice and the Certs are blank.

Wonderful adventure to run. Definitely the most entertaining part for me was seeing how many people actually wanted to get shot over the wall and how many people wanted to wade through the undead.

4/5 good RP but my party steamrolled all the encounters. and I was playing the NPCs to win, just didn't stand a chance.
The chess part was good, but I prefer actual puzzles to just skill challenges

Really cool little module.
I love that the XP is awarded for an ethical decision, and I love the variety in encounters, including chess matches and a good-ol-fashioned skill challenge...
It's a great adventure, and I very highly recommend it.

This one was fun for the players but a bit poorly setup for the DM especially near the end with the final boss.

The faction letters were a nice touch.

The catacombs are creepy and it really give you a chance to set the tone for the adventure.

The chess section gives someone with an otherwise-useless proficiency a chance to shine. Plus, that part introduced Crackle who is generally a hit with players.

The final fight is a mess. The rules for the mote are scattered, so make sure you read and reread section and make sure you're intimately familiar with how the encounter is supposed to work.

The flameskulls and Spawns of Kyuss provided enough challenge as long as the other parts of the encounter are working.

What I really liked about this adventure is the feeling of time pressure. There are quite serious consequences to taking too long, which I greatly prefer to "no you can't take a short/long rest because you'll probably get ambushed or something" like several other modules. The players can take the rests if they really need/want to, but they will suffer consequences for it.

I also really like how they incorporated the faction missions, with detailed letters from each faction, and those missions can potentially be at odds with one another.

Combined with the death curse meaning lost max HP is permanent, this module will likely permanently kill or cripple a few characters.
Kind of goes hand in hand with Season 7, but those burrowing worms can catch people by surprise.
Like with most of Season 7, great with people who can accept this risk, not so much with those can't.

Definitely a fan of the ticking clock and final boss battle. Creates unique situations not seen every day.

I had a question regarding the magic item in this module. The adventure and cert list it as being 'adamantine' but the entry in the DM's guide - which the cert says to refer to - makes no such mention of the item being constructed with adamantine.

With XGE having rules for adamantine weapons that are optional in AL (crits on objects +500 GP to total cost), I'm wondering was this adamantine addition to the base item in the DMG done purposely?

I did a quick search and saw that the item was adamantine (and a lot beefier) in 3.5e. That feature seems to have dropped though in 5e.

the combat is a little subpar, but the time limit does give a good sense of tension. I do like how enemies actions (and tactics) are spelled out which also helps speed combat.

This was a fun one. I enjoyed running the RP aspects of this module. It was a rather "quick" one. Overall it was a pleasant change from an overall just a hack-in-slash, and the mobs provided enough challenge that wasn't too overwhelming for the players. This had a very good balance of both RP and hack-in-slash. I have ran this one now 4 times.

I noticed that the flaming skulls here are modified, in that they do not have "(hover)" beside their fly speed, which means they go much higher and get out of range of the melee characters.

I ran this as part of an online convention.
First of all, anything with flaming skulls has a +1 from me! I really enjoyed the RP aspect of what life in the Old City really is, how gruesome it can be! The characters deciding the fate of NPC really allows them to flaunt their alignment.
Overall a good mod, would of appreciated some more difficult encounters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
