ADD TO WISHLIST >

Steam has been rising from ruins east of the city of Thentia for almost two tendays. Scouts and adventurers have gone to investigate, but have not returned. What might be lurking in the depths of those dark places, and will it remain there?

A 2-hour adventure for 1st-4th level characters.

Beneath the Surface premiered at Conclave of Gamers 2017 and Tri-State Gamers Fall Tri-Con 2017.  It is the first part of the Squamous Writhings trilogy.

Maps for encounters and Adventurers League magic item certifications are included!  In addition, a map of the city of Thentia is included for reference.

Going to the Tomb of Annihilation?!  There is an additional PDF included with this download that offers an option to take your players from the Moonsea region to Port Nyanzaru in Chult, where they may enter into the Tomb of Annihilation hardcover campaign!

Find the rest of the Squamous Writhings trilogy here!

I just finished running this for a group using PBP (full adventure can be found in this forum thread: https://www.myth-weavers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39160&tg=83409). Figured I'd give a bit of a review on this one.

The Good
Very well written adventure, and one of the easiest ones to follow along with. Even just reading the adventure is worth it, and the story sucks you in. I especially like the inclusion of some enemies that I've not seen before (the Grungs and the Chitines), as well as the hint of a larger sunken city that for some reason is unknown to the residents of Thentia.

The players I took through this have all stated that they had a good time playing this, and they are hungry for more. We are actually thinking of running the follow up to this, Those That Dwell Beneath, so their characters can stay immersed in the machinations of the Grung and see if they can figure out what's up with that magic portal and why the Grungs are building it.

I've run all three of the Squamous Writhings trilogy already, and decided I'd give them a writeup after a bit of time to let them sink in.

In my opinion, Beneath the Surface has a little bit too much railroading and straight forwardness for my tastes- Perhaps a little more guidance on the trip there, or some sort of encounter. Once the players get into the underground section however, it becomes one of my favorite AL modules I've ever ran. The atmosphere from the broken lights is a neat touch. I've never really managed to get the Choldirth encounter to feel impactfull, even though I've ran it three times. Players just don't really fell any attachment to it, outside of them just attacking the players.

Most of the groups I've run have LOVED the Grung encounter in the village however. The atmosphere again is top notch- The posioned and dead grung make for a really kind of horror movie esque feel to the final fight, with the civilians lives on the line in the process.

PURCHASER
I like this module a lot and have ran it a few times, but there are definitely some things that give players the chance to needlessly increase the run time. Like, sending the players to the vendor to get the potion rather than just having Reggie or Archie give them the potion? Players may also find the map at the end and have the urge to start go exploring, rather than to immediately save the guards and get to the "TO BE CONTINUED..." teaser.

As written, it feels like it basically requires railroading, even for AL players that should know the bounds and be minded towards staying on track.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
