Arcane Tradition: Mage Hunter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

DEFEND THE JUNGLE AGAINST DARK SORCERY AND TWISTED HORRORS

Before the Spellplague, the practice of magic in Chult was presided over by Mezro's College of Wizards, and regulated by the fearsome Mage Hunters. But those days are gone, and the jungles face new, even more dangerous threats.

Once charged with hunting down and stopping renegade spellcasters, this ancient order of wizards are now tasked with protecting the fragile magical balance of Chult from being corrupted by dark, otherworldly threats.

This supplement contains:

  • A brief background of the order of the Mage Hunters
  • The Mage Hunter arcane tradition for the Wizard class
  • Adventure ideas and three new monsters: the Algoid, the Maurhezi Demon, and the Dark Naga.

This supplement was created by Rich Lescouflair and Ruty Rutenberg for the DM's Guild Adepts line of products. It is inspired by the original 1993 Jungles of Chult setting book.

This is the same as the one found in Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else, correct?

Though overall the tradition looks very interesting, I must say that the level 14 ability seems extremely weak. Only gaining expertise in Arcana seems really weak and under par, especially when compared to the level 14 ability for the School of Abjuration.

Considering 1 level of cleric can give you that, and a lot more XXX, yeah. It's pretty lousy. LV14 abilities shouldn't be ribbons, which is what that is at that point.

There are a issues with this archetype.

First, under Hunter's Armament there appears to be a typo at the bottom of the page: "and the again to +2 bonus at 14th level."

Second, the language under Arcane Sanctum is odd and somewhat unclear. You learn the magic circle spell and can cast it once between rests without expending a spellslot. Okay, that's clear. But then, "When you use your action to cast magic circle..." I think you are suggesting that you can cast the spell once per rest without using a spellslot with a casting time of one action instead of one minute. That really needs to be made clearer.

Thanks for pointing out the typo, Joshua. It should read "and then again to a +2 bonus", and has been corrected.

As per the Arcane Sanctum feature, the full sentence stated: "When you use your action to cast magic circle in this way, you do so instantly and at a range of self without expending a spell slot." The sentence in its entirety specifies that you cast magic circle instantly with the use of an action. We cleaned up the language a little bit to prevent further confusion at first glance.

Hey, I really like the flavor of the Mage Hunter, but it honestly feels a touch weak, I'd add something early on to make them have an effective advantage over the other archetypes when facing a non-caster. Maybe a slight damage buff when attacking a marked target with your melee weapon?

Adding this to my Cart right now! I will be interested to compare this to the Mage Hunter arcane tradition M.T. Black wrote for Raiders of the Lost Tomb: http://www.dmsguild.com/product/222327/Raiders-of-the-Lost-Tomb-Chult-Adventurers-Guide

Any chance this will also become AL legal?

Hi, Jeremy! As with all other Guild Adepts releases, these need to go under review by admins before they can be considered legal for AL. If and when that happens, we'll be updating these in the same manner as the initial releases.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
