Eldritch Expansion

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"Eldritch magic, the powers drawn from those dark beings and forces which exist between the stars. Not as pervasive as the arcane and divine magics wielded by more common spellcasters, eldritch magic always presents an aspect of otherness, a connection to a world which rarely intersects with ours and which strikes ordinary mortals as strange... and dangerous."

Unlock the secrets of the Far Realm and otherworldly magic with this over-70-page supplement for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

The Eldritch Expansion offers new materials for both players and Dungeon Masters interested in the strangest and most other-worldly aspects of the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. Inside you'll find resources and rules for traversing the Far Realm, calling upon eldritch magics, and battling alien creatures.

Included in this supplement:

  • 10 pages of lore and optional rules for the Far Realm, aberrations, and eldritch magic.
  • 17 magic items, including 3 new artifacts.
  • 2 new races, the Eldritch Scion and Rogue Illithid.
  • The Eldritch Warden, a new class with 3 specialisation options.
  • 9 new class specialisations, including new options for barbarians (the Abomination), bards (College of Unearthly Drone), clerics (Eldritch Disciple), rogues (Slayer), warlocks (The Archangel, The Genie, and the Reaper), and wizards (Eldritch Teurge, School of Sympathy).
  • 24 new Eldritch Invocations
  • 25 new spells, including new "channeled" spells.
  • 19 new monsters, including lore and statblocks for Aspects of Elder Evil, new Beholderkin, Illithidae, and Tsochari.

This supplement includes material adapted from the 3rd edition rulebooks Complete Arcane, Elder Evils, and Lords of Madness, as well as original materials.

Any recommendations to improve the content will be gladly appreciated!

Updates:

Update v3.5 - Erratum

  • Minor corrections to cleric Eldritch Disciple domain.

Update v3.4 - Cultural Sensitivity and Critical Designs

  • The term 'voodoo' has been removed where it previously occured in the document. Please see my apology below.
  • This document has been brought into my wider 'Critical Designs' brand.

Author's Apology: Earlier renditions of this expansion included references to certain traditional African religions. This was done when I was younger, and less familiar with issues around cultural appropriation, and then promptly forgotten about in the years since. It was also done with the best of intentions - I even included a sidebar explicitly stating that the purpose of the relevant content was to capture a certain picture in popular culture, and was not intended to offend or parody the real world religions which that popular cultural notion was based upon. However, after an issue was raised by the DM's Guild team, I now acknowledge that, as someone with no connection to these real world cultures and religions, it was wrong of me to use terminology from those cultures to describe my own creation. As such, I have renamed the offending subclass the "School of Sympathy", as it is primarily based around the notion of sympathetic magic found in many European mystic traditions as well as the African traditions after which it was once named. I would also like to wholeheartedly apologise to anyone who was offended by my use of this terminology before.

This said, I would also like to raise a concern with how the DM's Guild team seems to have handled this issue. I was made aware of the problem in my own content via an email which simply noted the word appeared somewhere in the text, suggesting the team made no attempts to determine the nuances of any particular case. While in my case it was valid, it is difficult not to be concerned that such wholesale approaches could do more harm than good - by banning and blocking black and POC individuals who are genuinely trying to celebrate these cultures.

For this reason, I wanted to take this opportunity to point readers towards The Wagadu Chronicles [LINK], an afrofantasy PNP and online RPG supplement developed exclusively by black and POC people to celebrate African culture in all of its beauty and wonder. Please check it out and support the development if you can!

To conclude, I sincerely apologise for offence that may have been caused by my previous cultural insenstivity - I have ratified the problem as soon as I was made aware. Remember to continue to support #BlackLivesMatter and that being just 'not racist' (but not commitedly anti-racist) is no better than being racist in a systemically racist society. Be kind to each other, apologise when we make mistakes, and let's fight the good fight, together.

Update v3.2 - Erratum

  • Correction of formating errors in the Eldritch Warden Harrowing Touch feature.

Update - Printer Friendly

  • A smaller file size, "printer friendly" version of the document is now included.

Update v3.1 - Erratum

  • Correction of formatting errors in the Spells section.

Update v3.0 - New subclasses and Aspects of Elder Evil

  • Multiclass prerequisites and proficiencies for Eldritch Warden added.
  • Two new class specialisations introduced: the College of Unearthly Drone for the Bard, and the School of Voodoo Sympathy for the Wizard.
  • Aspect of Cthulhu, Aspect of Dendar, Aspect of Llymic, Aspect of Ghaunadar, and Aspect of Ragnorra introduced, alongside templates and statblocks for the Brood of Father Llymic and the Spawn of Ragnorra.

Update v2.0 - Clarification for Wizard

  • Correction of erratum on page 19, "paladin" replaced with "warden": now "You can make a warden quickly by following these suggestions."
  • Updated description of Eldritch Theurge's Eldritch Spellblastto clarify:
    • Maximum level of attached spell.
    • Spell slot lost in cases where eldritch blast cantrip misses.
    • Differentiating between the level at which the attached spell is cast (matched to the spell slot expended) and the overall level of the combined casting; the former referring to the damage and other properties of the spell, the latter referring to interactions with Counterspell and similar magical effects.

Update v1.2 - Artwork change

  • Artwork on p.20 updated due to concern over claimed "artist" having comitted plagiarism. New art by RobCV.

Update v1.1 - Clarification for Rogue

  • Updated description of Slayer's Baneful Mark to clarify targetting creatures not native to the current plane on which the player is at time of use.

Update v1.0 - Clarifications and class/subclass features

  • "DM's Tips" sidebars added in the Race section to clarify intended usage of Eldritch Scion's alien adaption and the Rogue Illithid's hive mind susceptibility.
  • Placed a damage limit on Eldritch Warden's Harrowing Touch to reduce potential impact at higher levels.
  • Updated Abomination's Eldritch Transformation to limit AC bonus.
  • Updated Eldritch Disciple's Channel Divinity: Gift of the Divine Patron to limit options (bringing it more in line with other "Channel Divinity" features).
  • Updated Warlock "The Genie" patron's Wish-Giver feature to clarify the limits of the ability.
  • dated Eldritch Theurge. Otherworldly Endurance limitted to only provide temporary hit points at trigger. Eldritch Spellweaver brought in line with Eldritch Warden's Soulbound (provides one free use of chosen spell).

Question.
In the Eldritch Warden, under the Harrowing Touch portion, it references a "pool of arcane power" but theres no kind of table or reference on how big that pool starts at or how much it grows as a Warden levels up. Is there something I'm just missing? Any kind of clarification on that would be appreciated.

Through reading the comments on here, I did find that its 5 points per Warden level, but that isn't necessarily clarified in the actual document. This is how the text reads.

You can invoke the power of your bond to inflict pain and fear.
You have a pool of arcane power that replenishes when you
take a long rest. With that pool, you can inflict damage equal
to your eldritch warden level x 5.
When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can
draw power from the pool to inflict additional necrotic
damage to that creature, up to the maximum amount
remaining in your pool or up to half the amount in your pool
when full (rounded down), whichever is less.
Alternatively, as an action you can touch a creature and
expend 5 points from your pool of arcane power to inflict the
target with fear.
The target must make a Wisdom
saving throw (DC equals 8 + your
proficiency bonus + your Charisma
modifier). On a failed save,...See more

The "pool" is the "equal to your eldritch warden level x 5" bit - the language here directly parallels the text of the Paladin "Lay on Hands" feature, so it should be reasonably unambiguous for players familiar with that feature!

Cheers, I have yet to give your product a thorough going over. I wanted to mention I purchased your product because of the apology you wrote. It made me think of my own campaigns and I wondered if I had done the same thing. Thanks. We are all in this together. I had previously purchased your steam punk product and look forward to using them both.

Hi there I have a question about Brimstone Blast and Y'chak's Thousand Rays. When you use Y'Chak Thousand Rays and use Brimstone Blast, does it do fire damage per dice roll of Y'Chak, for example, if Y'Chak do 2d10 damage and you use a first level spell slot for Brimstone Blast, does it do 2d6 damage (since Y'Chak use 2 Eldritch Blasts) or will it only do 1d6 damage for the whole Thousand Rays?

RAW, Y'chak's Thousand Rays is treated as a single 'beam', and as such, it would only deal an additional 1d6 fire damage for the whole Thousand Rays, but it would deal this additional damage to each target caught in the cone of the Thousand Rays effect. (The reasoning behind this is that a 30-foot cone will hit multiple targets, so the overall 'extra damage' will likely remain about the same.)

If you wish to home rule it differently, that is at your GM's discretion, although note that the combination of these two features could become overpowered if you do so.

I have a question about Y'chak's Thousand Rays, it mentions something about doubling its range with eldritch spear but if you have the agonizing blast invocation does it still deal the extra charisma damage per die rolled or is it just one flat increase as if it was the basic spell, also the same question for hexblades curse

Agonizing Blast would just be one flat increase on Y'chak's Thousand Rays (as it is assumed you can typically hit more targets with a 30-foot cone than 2-4 rays, so the damage would scale too much otherwise!). Hexblade's Curse specifies that it is "a bonus to damage rolls against the cursed target", so the damage from that feature would apply in addition to the damage from Y'chak's Thousand Rays against only the creature affected by the curse, as it would with any other damage roll.

Apologies, this is a known issue and I'm working on fixing it for the next update (just been very busy recently so have had limited opportunities to work on DMG stuff).

I believe that line was a typo from an earlier, which would originally have referred to the second channel divinity option at 14th level earlier in the feature. As stated in the previous comment, I will be fixing this and other minor typos in the next update.

I know you updated this relatively recently, so I'm not sure if you have time for something like this- But for the Eldritch Disciple Cleric Domain, the Channel Divinity feature just ends with "You can choose one additional option for your", without saying what it is you can choose or when. Also, just noticed! But there is a typo beneath that where it says "Eldricth" secrets.

A typo I saw:

Page 6, under Atropus's description "Appearing as a moonlike orb of darkness desires nothing less than the end of the entire multiverse,"
I assume that's meant to say either "desiring" or "Appearing as a moonlike orb of darkness, Atropus desires"

Also in the description of Brimstone Blast you wrote "Eldritch Essence" as "'Eldricth' Essence."

In the description of Grell: "Grell wield a unique form of alchemy derived from an 'admixture' of powerful magic"

In the Neogi's description: "neogi are a race of sinister and 'creedy' merchant folk,"

I am really enjoying this but what are the chances of getting this as a print on demand at some point? I really would love to have a hard copy version as well as a digital only version. I say this as I don't have a printer and few opportunities to have this printed out for me.

Hey!

So the print format option is not actually available to the authors on this website - whether or not to release a print on demand option is decided by the DM's Guild team (cf. https://support.dmsguild.com/hc/en-us/articles/217029298-Content-and-Format-Questions). I have admittedly not expressly emailed them to put this on the waitlist, although I would be more than happy for a print option to be available, if the publisher agreed to release one. If you want to recommend this expansion for a print-on-demand option, may I recommend highlighting it to the publisher? (email: publisherservices@onebookshelf.com)

Thanks

As it currently stands, the size of the PDF is an inevitable result from the size of the content (including images) and the program I used to create it. My best advice at present would be to print the document, or the sections of content you are currently using, if the loading problem is insufferable. (Unfortunately, DM's Guild does not currently allow print copies of community titles, so I can't offer you an official print copy.)

The Spells list on page 40 seems to have some formatting problems which is causing the spells to not show up under the proper Class. For example, under Bard there is a blank spot for 5th level and just below that is a 2nd level spell: Blackrot. Four columns over is the Druid which doesn't show the spell level. I am assuming somehow the 2nd level Blackrot under Bard should be 2nd level under Druid instead? And the first four spells under Druid are also 2nd level spells?

Are the first three spells in the second column supposed to be the 5th level Bard spells? Finally the Cleric column seems to be messed up as well. Thanks for any clarification.

Aside form these formatting problems, I am greatly looking forward to integrating this product into my campaign. This was exactly what I was looking for to steer my current campaign in a Lovecraftian direction.

Hello!

My sincerest apologies - I don't quite know how that got through my editing as is, but I will try to sort the formatting ASAP.

The first three spells in the second column do appear to properly be the 5th Level Bard spells. The first set in the Druid spell list are 5th level spells - although I believe the 2nd Level Blackrot does belong with that class. As for the Cleric, Pall of Twilight is a 3rd level spell, so I'm guessing it's just the header got messed up on that.

Again, my sincerest apologies for that - I don't quite know how that's slipped through the many iterations so far! I will try and get it properly formatted ASAP!

Hopefully that should be all sorted now. The error was not in the original document, but in exporting it as a PDF from the software I developed it on - hence why I didn't notice it previously.

Please do inform me of any other formatting or similar issues you find, as although I have made every endeavour to thoroughly edit the document, there is just me working on it, and merely producing the content takes more time than I presently have spare!

Just wondering about the eldritch warden's harrowing touch how do you discern your pool of power. Is it like the paladins lay on hands or is it different. Thanks

As specified in the class, the pool contains warden level x 5 points (so a 3rd level Eldritch Warden would have 15 points worth, etc.). So yes, it functions akin to the Paladin "Lay on Hands" feature, and is designed to parallel that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
pixel_trans.gif
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
