“This is an incredible supplement full of clever writing that made me think Ed Greenwood had contributed. Every spellcaster, from wizards to clerics to eldritch knights, needs a copy of this book. Sure, this book has hundreds of balanced, creative, fun, new spells to fill your arsenal and is brimming with magic items both sinister and hilarious, but it also is chock full of story bits. Names for towers, magic words to shout when casting spells, and more, this supplement is worth at least triple every penny you drop on it... I could not be more excited!” (James Intracaso, host of Tabletop Babble)

“A fantastic book filled with some of the greatest powers ever to shine in the lands of Faerun! This book is a a wonderful asset for players seeking more options for their arcane characters or dungeon masters seeking new ways to spice up their arcane villains!” (Mike Shea, author of The Lazy DM)

"Elminster’s backlog of Wizard Tower Names and the tomes within the Spellcaster’s Library are perfect for those players that love to explore the details absent from current modules and will fuel your own adventures with new possibilities. Magical Trinkets and Strange Elixir made the little artificer in me go wild! My favorite section by far pertains to exemplary options for DMs or fastidious PCs roleplaying magical dialects and phrases with Verbal Spell Components. Okay, you got me… I’m impressed. (Ruty Rutenberg, Co-Creator & Dungeon Master of Maze Arcana)

Hello, So I was wondering what the spell component for Rainbow Beam was. It has V,S,M but does not say what it needed. Also was wondering if there was an update from the last posts I have made in the 14th of November.

The material component is a small clear gem or crystal prism worth at least 10 gp. It is not consumed.

I was reading my friend's copy of this as he wants to use it in our game- I noticed all the "Booming Blade' like spells such as Frostwind Blade etc have VS listed- while Booming is VM (a melee weapon) this makes almost all of your cantrips near impossible for someone to cast without also having a free hand- is this intended or oversight?

I went ahead and bought myself a copy while I was at it. If the spells were just V or if they were VSM (melee weapon) someone could cast them while weilding a shield and a weapon. The cleric ones in particular don't match up. It seems odd for them to be VS since you can't cast them If you don't have a free hand , but you have to make a melee attack with them as part of it.

Hey Derrick, this is very bizarre error, thanks for catching it. I don't know how a mistake like this crept into so many spells. These following cantrips all have an incorrect listing in the Components line -- the correct text is provided for each group of spells:

challenger's mark, leading strike, frostwind blade, virtuous strike -- Components: V, M (a weapon)

echoing blow, punishing strike -- Components: V

jinx shot -- Components: V, M (a ranged weapon)

looming shadow -- Components: V, M (a ranged or thrown weapon)

Are these all original spells or are they conversions from previous sources? If the latter, which sources did you convert?

I recently obtained a copy of version 1 from a friend so I could look at it and edit it for them to include book marks and links. Whoever did the editing of that version along with the proof reading was clearly rushed into pushing this thing out. I looked at the preview for the update and it appeared that it's much more polished on this go around so I went ahead and bought it. I have a couple of questions. Are your other books pushed out in this fashion? Also, where's the cool cover page that the first version had? Last question. Do you intend on adding bookmarks within your PDFs? An example would be the table of contents and being able to click on page 118 to go to page 118 or clicking on one of the spells in the spell list to go to that spell. As it stands, I'm going to have to spend about 10+ hours to add in all of these bookmarks and links. Thank you and I hope my criticism isn't too harsh. It's not meant to be.

Thanks, John - I'm glad you are enjoying the book.

To answer your questions - 1. We didn't include the cover page just to save a bit of space. You can access a fairly high-res version by clicking on the cover icon above. 2. I have a version with a linkable TOC but I haven't had a chance to do a final review before uploading it. So it is on its way.

cheers,

Yes, I am enjoying the book. Many awesome new spells and ideas. I spent several hours going through the PDF and bookmarking links from the spell lists to the spell descriptions as well as general bookmarks, TOC and the index. If you want, I can send you a copy to look over.

The Spell Earth Reaver is 5th level for all those that have it but the: At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the fire damage increases by 1d6 for each level above 4th. Makes it seem like its a 4th.

Thanks, I am going though all the spells as I add them to my Excel sheet with the updates. I have one more so far. After this one I will save the rest for when I finish going through the list. The spell Elemental Burst. Should it be radius or a cone? It says cone but it says its and explosive burst and if it is a cone how do you aim it? You release the magical energy from one of the elements in an explosive burst. You choose a point within range that contains one of the following five elements of your choice: air, earth (which includes soil, metal, or stone), fire, water, or wood. That material releases its elemental energy. Each creature within a 15-foot cone emanating from that point must make a saving throw.

Dread Mercy is listed in the Bard's, Paladin's and Ranger's Spell List as a 3rd level spell, however, Dread Mercy's description lists it as a second level spell. Would be interested in hearing as to if the spell is second or third level, so I can update my own database accordingly. Cheers!

We've hit some problems, I'm afraid. The cost of doing this on our end is greater than we thought, and OBS are also slowing down their rollout of POD titles on this platform. It's looking challenging.

Just to add to the fun your having, it would be nice once POD is available for the people who have already purchased the PDF have the ability to get a discount on purchasing the POD, similar if they are buying both at once (See Lost Tales of Myth Drannor). I had to have DMs Guild issue a refund and re-purchase it to get the discount once POD was an option.

While you're working on revisions, you may want to rename the Enervation spell; Xanathar's Guide to Everything has a spell with that exact name (page 155), but the effects aren't the same as those in Elminster's Guide to Magic. An easy change to make would be to put a mage's name in front of it, like Abi-Dalzim's Enervation. Elminster could even comment on Abi-Dalzim's propensity for such spells, given that Horrid Wilting is another of his inventions.

This is a great list of spells and almost all are very well balanced. One of the ones that stands out as completely overpowered however is celestial fist.

It does 3d8 damage (an average of 2.5 more damage than 2d10, the recommended damage for a first level spell) and also restrains your target. Restrained targets can not attack and make a save at the end of their turn. Basically guaranteed stun for at least one round at level 1.

Using it in play I've had a party of 1st level sorcerers (divine soul) stun lock extremely powerful enemies. It becomes a must take spell for anyone who has access to the cleric spell list. I think an easy fix would be to make it a 2nd level spell because even then it is very powerful. Just a suggestion from my experience :). This book is amazing though, must have took a lot of work.

Hey there! Is there by chance an ETA on an update for this material, to correct some of the errors listed in the comments below? If not, are updates made to this supplement made available to purchasers of previous editions?

We are currently preparing the book for printing, and we are applying errata to that edition. I don't have an ETA as I haven't done a print book before. We really want to double and triple check the proofing since we are going to print, so we are probably a few weeks away.

Spells:

Entropic Shield: Material component is (your holy symbol), yet it is available to bards, which typically don't have a holy symbol (and if they do, it is of no mechanical value to that class).

Hailstones: Duration of Concentration, up to 1 minute, so I assume the hailstones float nearby the caster for the duration, but what action do they take to launch the stones and how many can they launch with that action? Can I launch them upon casting? For now, I just model it after Melf's Minute Meteors (Elemental Evil Player's Companion / Xanathar's Guide to Everything)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
