Solo Adventure Bundle 1 (Fantasy Grounds)

5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and it is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurrences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And make sure to follow this publisher (5e Solo Gamebooks) to stay informed about future gamebook releases.

Attention Non-Fantasy Grounds users!

Ever wanted to TRY Fantasy Grounds?  This adventure is fully compatible with the DEMO version of Fantasy Grounds!  Just go to fantasygrounds.com, download the DEMO, and load this up!

I HIGHLY suggest you read the tutorial and play the example campaign (it's a couple of encounters).

Then you'll be ready!  Enjoy!

Played every module so far. Found the occasional missing or inaccurate link, but perhaps 2 or 3 in total across all of the modules, and I don't have notes (sorry, I know that is no help). Definitely fun, worth the purchase, and fits the bill when you are not in a regular group and want to play. Looking forward to the next release.

Looks like the module is not 100% compatible with Fantasy Grounds Unity; specifically, there is a character encoding/font issue. Unfortunately it is likely a problem with the module itself.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?59715-Font-issue-discrepancy-between-Classic-and-Unity
(see the 2nd to last post in that thread for the technical details)

Here's a screencap of the issue I'm talking about:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mymh10dvceb82zx/Capture.PNG?dl=0

Naturally, this is very distracting. I'm not sure if FGU is still technically in "beta", but as more people switch to it from FGC, they are likely to encounter this.

Hey Christopher, yeah, that's because UNITY has MUCH STRICTER standards on XML that FG Classic, so that's a known issue. It can be fixed, so I'll get to work on that.

Well, I have to wait a day to give it a review, when I do 5 stars and on to the next one! I used Fantasy Grounds Unity and it worked fine from what I could tell. I will use FG classic next time though. Excellent use of Fantasy Grounds capability to run a choose your own path adventure.

I purchased with the purpose of catching up players to levels 2. I'm a new DM and was looking forward to directing players in 1 on 1 session to learn their styles and expectations. I was looking forward to getting to read it. I was pleasantly surprised to see I can play it myself! On a side note when it mentions asking here for the COMPLETE MAP. Is this the proper place to do so? Thank you Rob2E for the conversion and the great youtube guide.
The readme was incorrect in installation*.
In FG Unity. Had to install into FGUdata/modules.

The README is not incorrect. It assumes Fantasy Grounds classic. At this time unity is in beta, and although it should work it is not fully supported because we cannot support a beta product until it’s final release. If you have more questions please feel free to drop by our Discord where we have over 1200 people talking about Fantasy Grounds and D&D 24/7.

Questions:
1) At the end there was 400 xp for the quest, but when does my character get XP for the encounters? My character ended up with a total of 400 xp, which was not enough to level.

2) There were 4 parcels, but they were each empty. Are there any parcel for this?

3) How do I issue XP (and know the XP) for NPC kills?

I only made the Fantasy Grounds module. I am not the author. I suggest asking those questions to the author (of the PDF).

Hi Rob.
Do these solo adventures also work in Fantasy Ground Unity?

Everything WILL work with FGU, however keep in mind that Unity is still in beta and we cannot GUARANTEE anything until final release. There shouldn't be any problem now, but keep that in mind.

I just finished my first time through this! I'll be sure to come back in 24 hours to post a review.

But I did enjoy it immensely. It's like a choose your own D&D Adventure, very cool. I wish there was more pre-made token art, especially since there is already art available for some of the tokens ... specifically, the Death Knight. Why not make a token for the DK using the art of him on the throne?

So the original PDF author allowed you to use the art for this conversion but not to make tokens from it? That's weird.

I found this to be quite short. how long are the sequels? yes i realize this is dependent on if you live/die/ play more than once. For a single succesful playthru what can expected length be?

Hey Adam:

Death Knight's Squire has 341 story entries.
Tyrant of Zhentil Keep has 493 story entries.
Citadel of the Raven has 589 story entries.

Hope that answers your question.

Hey, just bought this version cause I have the PDF and I wanted to enjoy this on FG. Sadly I can't seem to load it on the module. I can see the Tyrant of the Zhentil Keep and Citadel of the Raven, but I cannot see The Death knights squires amongst my module. I checked the appdata foler that leads me to the module and it's there. So I'm a bit confuse.

Hi. I just played the first module, The Death Knight's Squire, and I liked it. Perhaps too short for the price, in my humble opinion. But still fun and I recommend it.

So a question: I just purchased the next two modules and I don't know how to get my PC from the first game into the next campaign. Any tips? Thanks!

I'm going to answer my own question, since there may be other out there having the same frustration. I stumbled on the solution accidentally and you may not be as lucky.

1. Open the original campaign.
2. Open PCs
3. There is a little piece of chalk looking thing in the lower corner indicating "Edit List". This is the magic key. Click it.
4. On your character, you now have an option to export.
5. Export in the normal windows manner.
6. Now open the new campaign.
7. Go to PC.
8. Import file in the normal windows manner.
9. You now owe me a karmic debt. ;)

Can I run this module without any other books purchased and DM for a single player?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
