Above the Mines of Mirabar

Welcome, Dungeon Master, to your first foray into the Tales of the Halfling Bard Brotherhood! We've traveled Faerun and searched every crevice, listened to every townsfolk with a tale, and independently verified all accounts to deliver to you the forgotten stories of the Forgotten Realms. In these pages you'll hear a harrowing tale of a cursed family in need of respite, and the blueprint to adapt their rescue to your own narrative. From the dark Mines of Mirabar to the crest of the Spine of the World-- your party will follow a path none have tread in centuries, and confront a place from which only one has ever returned...

This adventure can be used as an alternate chapter during Storm King's Thunder, an adventure inbetween Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat, or simply a one-off adventure in your homebrew campaign! Take what you like from it or run it as it is-- it's completely up to you! Just make sure that your characters are somewhere around level 5, and you shouldn't have to modify much!

I just finished running this as a side quest during Storm King's Thunder and it was truly excellent. My players enjoyed the cart chase and the gricks fight the most. It required some preparation as some maps are not included or not detailed enough. I notably created a vertical map of the statue for the gricks fight and it did wonders. I also upgraded the wights to give them more individual abilities and have a more "party vs party" vibe. All of it was absolutely worth it. If only to see the face of my players when they learned they were in a Lich Crypt!

My group had a lot of fun with this. I made it a pit stop on the way down out of the mountains following the Forge of Fury. The competitive party twist really helped in ramping up the urgency of the mission, and it was a great opportunity for my party to learn how to move at a faster pace. "Lifting the curse" proved a great motivator. There were enough solid plot hooks to keep everyone on track without it seeming like a railroad.

There are a few minor problems, most notably for me was that multiattack was left out of some key stat blocks, which radically downgraded a major fight (we were well in before I realized it). Also, the NPC classes are left out of the stat blocks, so you might want to note those in before you get going. Also, on page 16, Figure x.x refers to Figure 2.1. On page 19, Figure x.x refers to Figure 2.2.

Too bad this is the only Halfling Bard Brothers offering?

Ran this in the middle of a Storm King's Thunder campaign. With a few tweaks here and there to make it more difficult, it worked very well! My only quibble was that there appears to be a missing section on page six, where it says: "He points out the final entry in the journal, dated 1371 Dalereckoning, 220 years prior:" but there's no journal entry provided!

Good question. It looks like it never got put in. "He points out the final entry in the journal,
dated 1371 Dalereckoning, 220 years prior:" but there is nothing after the colon.

@Marc B, I noticed a typo on page 16, under "the climb" there is a reference to figure X.X when I think you meant figure 2.1

really looking forward to running this with my players!

6-8th levels are the most appropriate, there's enough encounter variance and difficulty that you can put the breaks on or press the gas depending on your needs :)

*PS, we noticed we left that out entirely from the preview after you said something, so I've updated it. Thank you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
