"Everything I needed was right there, and I didn't have to do math on the fly, just record what was happening and it all worked like magic."~ Jennifer L.

"This tool alone has single-handedly given me the ability to create intresting encounters for entire dungeon runs in a fraction of my average time" ~  Trym S.

"I've always been fully committed to good notes, pen, paper, dice and a DM screen. However, after one session, I'm completely converted to these excel worksheets and have ditched the DM screen for the laptop. This tool is fantastic!" ~Brad L.

Loop Until Conf = vbYes Or Conf = vbCancel Or C > 10000

Runtime Error 6 Overflow was the error that i encountered, using Excel 365 in Mac. My friend who downloaded this one as well perfectly works for her. NPC Generator and Tavern Generator only malfunctions. Nevertheless, great file, hope there will be some tutorials or an instruction guide on how to use the file.

thanks! more power

How do you suggest I use it to track combat? I'm not seeing a clear way to do that easily.

There's two pages for that! The readied encounter page lets you track health, and the initiative tracker tab tracks initiative. There's no mechanic for running the battle map or anything, but it's pretty good for initiative and health. Let me know if you're having a tough time finding it!

Hey! I'm a total novice at Excel, is there a tutorial video or something I could watch to better use this program?

Unfortunately no, and you're not the first to ask! I have considered making a video tutorial, but it's honestly pretty intimidating to whip something together like that so it's sat on the back burner. If you have specific questions i can help!

Generally though just populate the player sheet, build encounters on the build encounter sheets, and run encounters from the encounter and initiative sheets! I know that's overly simple, but play around and i'm sure you'll get the hang of it.

Hi!
First off, I just wanna say that this is incredible work and it's a wonderful tool.
I just have a minor edit suggestion, I fixed it myself, but in the encounter builder, on the player manager section, the carrying capacity and the push pull drag weights are switched, the push/pull weight is half the carrying.
Just wanted to touch base and give a heads up.

Is there a way to change the number of players to 2? I see 3 as the lowest.
Customer avatar

3 Is the lowest, but you can just leave the 3rd entry blank. I am running a solo campaign with this tool and i just leave players 2 and 3 as inactive. As long as you leave them inactive you shouldn't see any weirdness.

Thanks for asking!

This is wonderful, thank you for all your work! The location we usually play doesn't have internet so these tools are particularly useful, especially the NPC Generator. Even without that factor, your NPC generator is one of my favorites for the full range of supported races and descriptiveness of the NPC's appearance.

Not only did I want to thank you, I also wanted to check in. I want to ask how things are going with the latest versions of your generators, I hope things are going well, especially during these crazy times. If you need any help working on them, mostly for something tedious and less technical, I'd be willing to help :)

Hey Sean! I appreciate your nice comments! I am still working on the next version of the generator, and I'm actually mostly finished with the NPC generator. The main holdup is that I'm combining the NPC and tavern generators so that when you generate a tavern it will automatically spin up a few patrons and a bar tender. Unfortunately that means that the next gen NPC generator is pending the next Tavern Generator. That being said the main work ahead is coding and research!

I haven't had a huge amount of energy to work on it recently because the company I work for just got purchased so I have a new job title, new manager, new everything and that has been just sucking my energy away. Plus I run two weekly campaigns! I'm hoping that as the dust settles I'll have a little more energy to devote to the generator!

This is awesome, nice work. :)

I love the names, they seem to fit the theme of the race of the character very well. It's great that all official races are supported and it doesn't seem impossible to add your own if you want. The description of the cloths are much simpler, but the rest of their appearance (the more notable things worth talking about) are much better and can do a good job of painting the character in the reader's mind. Their personality is also well described, yet concise enough to read quickly and run with it.

The bulk NPC generation is great. It'd be a good way to create a cast of characters or just a list of villagers to draw from. My only complaint is that the genders aren't listed in the table with them.

The establishment generator is very good. I love how it draws on the NPC generator for the attendant. The description of the establishment is also very good, especially since it can be read as-is to players. The only thing I think would be missing would...See more

Sean,

Thanks a ton for your thoughtful feedback! I'm glad you like the new version! I actually simplified the clothing generation deliberately! I felt when i'd read the descriptors to the players it just bogged down the description. With that change in design philosophy i focused on making the things that actually would stick out to the player more obvious. Like, I don't really care if someone i meet is wearing a red or a blue shirt, but i am going to remember if they had a crooked nose, or the overall condition of their ensemble! So that was sort of my guiding principle during this rev of the generator. Plus, if you have an NPC where their clothes really matter, then you probably have a pretty good idea already in mind, so what i usually do in that situation is get an NPC i like and then tweak the description so that it not only stands out through the description, but it also stands out through the language used to describe it.

I went back and forth on having the gender listed. This...See more

Hi there!

Im trying to find something that includes the class "The Lingering Soul" We would like to be able to use deceased characters in our campaign and this seems like a really cool and fun option. I haven't been able to find any character builders out there that include it. SO far this is the BEST excel sheet I have been able to find for detail and reliability. Is there a way I can edit this to include The Lingering Soul class? I'm not an excel wizard so I might need some help. Thanks!!

Hey there, have a quick question. Is there a way to build an encounter and load that into the Readied encounter, as to be able to build encounters ahead of time and load them right into the initiative tracker? Amazing amazing work truly, once I get the hang of this, I will absolutely purchase. It is astonishing the amount of effort you have put into this.

Daniel, on the right side of the Encounter Builder tab (below the image and to the right of the encounter Total field) there are 4 buttons/cells. You can Save an encounter that you've created here, which will add it to the Saved Encounters tab. You can also click Ready to move the information to the Readied Encounter tab.

The View/Load will allow you to access previously saved encounters on the Builder tab where you can make updates.

All of this lets you build them ahead of time and update as needed!

Hello! Thank you for making this, it's made my life as a new DM significantly easier! I also have a question about using it. Is there a way to generate magical loot? I see the ability to add my own loot lists, but there's also a magical items library and I'm curious about linking them together. For example, my players are going to a mafia wedding where a lot of mafia members are pretty skilled with magic. I'd love to have random things that they could pickpocket or find - is there a way to generate this?

Lincoln S July 22, 2020 4:56 pm UTC

Hey Karla!

I'm glad to hear that you like the tool, and i love hearing that you're using the new loot table feature! Even though the magic items don't show up in the dropdown when configuring your loot table you can manually enter the magic items. Unfortunately their properties won't show up in the loot table generator, but they will roll just like any other item. Adding full magic item integration is on my list of planned improvements, but i have had very little time to work on this project recently.

Technically you can add any value you want to the loot tables, including random key mashing. Though, If it's not a mundane item it won't populate the value and properties automatically.

Thanks for reaching out!

Great DM tool! I purchased it today and while happily exploring the features I stumbled on a minor bug in the Character Builder 2.4. When awarding the EXP to the active players on the Readied Encounter sheet and you’re using Excel with a “,” (comma) as a decimal separator (Europe, I know :-) ), you will get a “subscript out of range” in the RoundRight module as you hardcoded the Split function with a “.” (dot). Easily fixed if you change it to “Application.DecimalSeparator” Keep up the good work!!!

Hey Donny! I have a few basic troubleshooting questions that i need to ask quick.

-Are you on Mac or Windows?
-What version of the encounter manager are you using?
-Have you tried re-downloading the sheet fresh? Does the problem persist?
-Does this only happen when you try to view and ready saved encounters, or does it happen with manually populated encounters as well?
-What are you doing right before the error shows up? What button do you click, what sheet are you on?

I am on windows and am using version 2.11 (downloaded it again, but the problem persists)
It happens when i'm trying to view or load encounters. Readying encounters is no problem, but I have to manually iinput the monsters before I can generate a new encounter (e.g. I cannot load pre created encounters from the Saved encounters list).
It happens when I'm on the Encounter Builder and Xanathars encounter builder tabs. No buttons pushed in advance

Column width values in the form 'EncounterBrowser' are seperated by a coma.
For some reason, european notation uses semi colons instead of coma's.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
