"I've always been fully committed to good notes, pen, paper, dice and a DM screen. However, after one session, I'm completely converted to these excel worksheets and have ditched the DM screen for the laptop. This tool is fantastic!" ~Brad L.

"Everything I needed was right there, and I didn't have to do math on the fly, just record what was happening and it all worked like magic."~ Jennifer L.

"This tool is a DM's best friend! It has never been easier to capture ciritcal player stats, set up a sequence of encounters, balance them for your party, track initiative and HP, assign experience points, and so much more." ~Austin T.

"First off, I want to say that this is AMAZING. I essentially work in Excel full-time for my job and this spreadsheet is a work of art." ~Baelin D.

Lincoln, in my download the current hit points and condition on 'player manager' are not updating when changed on the encounter page. It seems that the index isn't getting a match.
Also the AC didn't match my players AC when they calculated it with the "book" method

Running my first ever campaign DM tonight and will be using the spreadsheet, I'll tell you how it goes. I'm super stoked with this!

First of all, I hope your game went well! How was

I've got a few troubleshooting questions for you!

-What version of the sheet are you running?
-What version of Excel are you running?
-Have you tried redownloading and trying it on a fresh sheet?
-What was the discrepancy that you were seeing on the AC calc? What modifiers did the character have?

Hopefully I can help! And if there's a bug I'm guessing it's an easy fix.

Thanks for reaching out!

Good Afternoon Lincoln!

It went great I am running the Death Pit of Moloch tonight. I'm pretty stocked for this new hobby its so much fun!!!!!
I am using encounter builder 2.14.1, excel version 2108 (build 1426.20404 click to run)

I think the AC Modifier didn't work for only one player a Drow Elf, her "book" AC was 2 higher then calculated.

That didn't play much into the overall game play.
Sorry for the late reply, I guess I haven't set my account up for email notifications.

If you would like any help in some VBA I would like to offer any help, if you don't have a larger team :)

Glad to hear it went well! I'll do a little sleuthing and see why it didn't calculate correctly. Would you be able to post the calculation for the drow and all of the modifiers according to the book? That would really help me narrow things down.

It's just me working on this! I appreciate the offer and I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever looking to grow the team!

Good job on the spreadsheets dude! It's clear you've put a lot of work into this, and it shows. I have one minor request: Can you add in Halfling as a race? I've done it manually on my copy but it'd be useful for the other folk.

I have a major request too, but would totally understand if you don't want to go this route. It's a huge ask with a lot of hours to put in. Basically, I'd like to view average damage output per round from both players vs the monster. In addition to finding how many ally and enemy combatants there are to determine who will most likely win, comparing average damage output versus average health is another way to determine which side will likely win. Obviously that doesn't count for special abilities or tactics, but it's a tool I've used in the past to help figure out if my party can handle an encounter or not.

Thanks Jason! It's a labor of love.

Halfling is already included on a sub race basis like the other races with sub races. Currently there are Lightfoot, Stout, Lotusden, and Ghostwise halflings available in the dropdown as those are the sub races that have been published by WoTC.

As for your major request, that is a big ask! I'll keep it in mind, but I can't promise it'll be added any time soon.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you're enjoying the tool!

Looks great! However, when I try to clear the player info that's already loaded so I can load my players info; I get a run time error 6 overflow message. The debugger screen appears like it's asking me to confirm the code to clear the sheet, but I'm not very good with the coding stuff. Any chance you can lend a hand?

Are you referring to the dialog box that pops up asking you to confirm? if so, that 's just there to keep you from accidentally blowing away your data! Just click yes to confirm.

If that doesn't work though try redownloading the sheet. If THAT doesn't work let me know and we can do some troubleshooting! I was not able to replicate the error on v2.13.

Hi, the spreadsheet looks fantastic and I can tell it would make running my campaign much easier! However. I was hoping to run it on Libre Calc, but the macros are refusing to load. I'm getting a "BASIC syntax error. Symbol expected." regardless of my security options. I'm assuming Open Office would have the same issue. Is this MS Excel exclusive, or has anyone managed to run it on the free stuff?

Howdy Paulina,

Unfortunately i don't believe that this will run on anything other than excel. Because of the extent that i utilize VBA for the sheet unless another software fully supports visual basic i don't believe it will work. Hopefully i'm wrong though and another user has found a way to make it work!

Hey! Amazing work on this spreadsheet, it's incredible and does way more than ever imagined. It's so easy to update or add monsters, the encounter builder is great and the ease of management is awesome!

With that being said, i'm proficient enough in excel and VB to be dangerous and I'm struggling. I have a character who has a Racial of Unarmored Defense. I wanted to add this as a Natural Armor type in case it's ever needed for future campaigns. I added it to the armor list with no issues, but I was hoping to get it to calculate the armor for me. It's properties are AC: 10+ Dex Modifier+Con Modifier.

Here's where I went down the rabbit hole and maybe since you built it you can help me?
I added rows for CON and a Con Modifier to the Player Manager, then I made a ConModifier function with success. (Similar to the DexModifier function) I assume this would be necessary for the main function.
I ran into issues modifying the getAC(), here's what I did: https://codeshare.io/5zDpMO...See more

Hey Afton! Thanks for being so thorough with what you've tried and what you're trying to do! I am actually working on some pretty big changes to the spreadsheet (hence the delay between releases) and one of the more minor changes is adding unarmored defense as an option! I almost beat you to it, but it looks like you're too quick for me. In the short term the easiest solution is to use that catch all modifier box, but long term i'll have it built in!

Thanks for the great feedback!

Does this work for Google sheets? Or could the cells be copy/pasted? I am quite skilled with Excel but I don't have a current subscription.
Customer avatar
Lincoln S February 16, 2021 10:18 pm UTC
CREATOR
Unfortunately no. It relies heavily on visual basic macros so it does have to be in excel. I did consider early on trying this in google sheets, but it is a poor fit for the stuff i need to do behind the scenes. If you can't swing the Office subscription, as long as you get your hands on an excel license for Excel 2010 or newer it should work!

Based on what you sent up there it looks like its looping enough to make that C variable overflow. There's two pages for that! The readied encounter page lets you track health, and the initiative tracker tab tracks initiative. There's no mechanic for running the battle map or anything, but it's pretty good for initiative and health. Let me know if you're having a tough time finding it!

Generally though just populate the player sheet, build encounters on the build encounter sheets, and run encounters from the encounter and initiative sheets! I know that's overly simple, but play around and i'm sure you'll get the hang of it.

First off, I just wanna say that this is incredible work and it's a wonderful tool.
I just have a minor edit suggestion, I fixed it myself, but in the encounter builder, on the player manager section, the carrying capacity and the push pull drag weights are switched, the push/pull weight is half the carrying.

3 Is the lowest, but you can just leave the 3rd entry blank. I am running a solo campaign with this tool and i just leave players 2 and 3 as inactive. As long as you leave them inactive you shouldn't see any weirdness.

This is wonderful, thank you for all your work! The location we usually play doesn't have internet so these tools are particularly useful, especially the NPC Generator. Even without that factor, your NPC generator is one of my favorites for the full range of supported races and descriptiveness of the NPC's appearance.

Not only did I want to thank you, I also wanted to check in. I want to ask how things are going with the latest versions of your generators, I hope things are going well, especially during these crazy times. Hey Sean! I appreciate your nice comments! I am still working on the next version of the generator, and I'm actually mostly finished with the NPC generator. The main holdup is that I'm combining the NPC and tavern generators so that when you generate a tavern it will automatically spin up a few patrons and a bar tender. Unfortunately that means that the next gen NPC generator is pending the next Tavern Generator. That being said the main work ahead is coding and research!

I haven't had a huge amount of energy to work on it recently because the company I work for just got purchased so I have a new job title, new manager, new everything and that has been just sucking my energy away. Plus I run two weekly campaigns! I'm hoping that as the dust settles I'll have a little more energy to devote to the generator!

This is awesome, nice work. :)

I love the names, they seem to fit the theme of the race of the character very well. It's great that all official races are supported and it doesn't seem impossible to add your own if you want. The description of the cloths are much simpler, but the rest of their appearance (the more notable things worth talking about) are much better and can do a good job of painting the character in the reader's mind. Their personality is also well described, yet concise enough to read quickly and run with it.

The bulk NPC generation is great. It'd be a good way to create a cast of characters or just a list of villagers to draw from. My only complaint is that the genders aren't listed in the table with them.

The establishment generator is very good. I love how it draws on the NPC generator for the attendant. The description of the establishment is also very good, especially since it can be read as-is to players. The only thing I think would be missing would...See more

Sean,

Thanks a ton for your thoughtful feedback! I'm glad you like the new version! I actually simplified the clothing generation deliberately! I felt when i'd read the descriptors to the players it just bogged down the description. With that change in design philosophy i focused on making the things that actually would stick out to the player more obvious. Like, I don't really care if someone i meet is wearing a red or a blue shirt, but i am going to remember if they had a crooked nose, or the overall condition of their ensemble! So that was sort of my guiding principle during this rev of the generator. Plus, if you have an NPC where their clothes really matter, then you probably have a pretty good idea already in mind, so what i usually do in that situation is get an NPC i like and then tweak the description so that it not only stands out through the description, but it also stands out through the language used to describe it.

I went back and forth on having the gender listed. This...See more

Daniel, on the right side of the Encounter Builder tab (below the image and to the right of the encounter Total field) there are 4 buttons/cells. You can Save an encounter that you've created here, which will add it to the Saved Encounters tab. You can also click Ready to move the information to the Readied Encounter tab.

The View/Load will allow you to access previously saved encounters on the Builder tab where you can make updates.

All of this lets you build them ahead of time and update as needed!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
