5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And when you're done, be sure to check out the other books in the series, as listed below. The sequel to Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep.

"Man, I really want to play DnD but I'm a forever DM and I don't have anyone to DM for me. I wonder if these solo gamebooks are any fun in that regard?"

If you're like me, you thought that line (or something similar) and came across this page. For me, it seemed like a dream come true. I loved CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) games and books as a kid and I still love them now as an adult. That being said, I never really got to be a player when I started playing DnD about four years ago. I have an itch that must be scratched so I decided - with some trepidation - to give this book a shot.

Overall 4/5 Stars. Not perfect, but definitely worth my time. Allow me to explain.

Pros:
- Well written. The author makes a point of providing you with a typical DnD narrative. It's nothing that's going to make you think about morality or contemplate life as a (insert edgy 5e race here) but it is enough to throw you into the DnD mindset. Throw on some good ambiance in the...See more

This was great! Thanks very much for making this type of content.
I have a, maybe basic question. I'm trying to understand the intention with resting and healing. The introduction mentions to follow the normal rules for resting and recovering hit die but I'm a bit confused about whether the short and long rest concepts exist. An example from the text is:

NIGHTCRITTERS - "Recover half a hit die". Is this a long rest that was interrupted? So do I roll a hit die and divide by 2? Or just take half of the value of the die? (i.e 4 if HD is d8).
NICECAMP - "May recover one hit die". So not a long rest? Assuming that I would deduct one hit die from my available pool but wouldn't automatically regain all hitpoints and 50% of hit dice etc?

And a very small piece of errata. In the Sub-Map 4 entry it says "When you are finished ... move to the edge of the map and onto the adjoining tilepage (sub-map 4)." Which is probably meant to read (sub-map 5).

I paid for the pdf thinking I could print it off so I could play anywhere, so far (1 hour) I am wrong I can print off random pages... certain page will not print as of right now I could get the cover and pages 2,3,4,6,11,13,14 to print. I stopped at 14 also its worth saying the only way to get those to print was by printing those pages one at a time on their own. I don't know if it my printer or computer or this pdf but its worth letting every one know. I do love the idea of running a camp by myself tho, and I haven't reviewed this yet in the hopes that I can either figure it out or it gets resolved one way or another. thanks for any input

Hi Ben. I've printed this pdf multiple times from many different setups without any problems. Are you printing from Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, or a different application?

I loved running through this story. I play 2nd edition and had to stubble through it as me and my brother played through it. Does anyone know a good way to convert to 2nd edition. The mobs didn't list HD for the mobs so I had to do my best with that.

What materials does a full beginner need to jump into this adventure? Assuming the starter set and players handbook?

PHB, or even just the Basic Rules pdf from the WOTC website. Starter set not necessary.

Is there a list of minis I would potentially need for this adventure listed anywhere? My son and I would like to run this with minis. Thanks!

Hmm, well you're not going to run into all the creatures on one playthrough. But just off the top of my head...
1 skeleton
1 giant centipede
2 giant wolf spiders
3 goblins
1 dark knight
1 death knight
1 bat

I think that's everything!

All right, so I just gave you a 5 star review but I really wanted to jump in here and say THANK YOU for making such an amazing solo adventure series. Initially, I bought this to DM for a friend who recently lost his vision. I tested it out just to see how it was and now I'M HOOKED on solo-adventures! Being a person who has played nearly 70% of my games as a DM, it was so nice to be a PC for once. Not only am I able to help my friend get back into gaming but I've also found something for myself as well. A thousand thanks and keep up the good work!

OH and I'm considering running this with/for others as well so if you're still offering a full map please let me know how I can obtain it :)

I've played through this twice so far with 2 different characters and got 2 different outcomes. There is enough content to ensure running it a second time isn't just the same thing, plus you can make different decisions or take different approaches if you do have some idea what is coming. I wasn't sure going into it how it would work, but the adventure pdf has links that bring you straight to the next part you need to read which is a great approach! Solo adventures are a great way to get to enjoy playing d&d in times when you can't get people together for a game or if you just want to try different class/race combinations. I definitely recommend giving solo adventuring a try!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
