5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And when you're done, be sure to check out the other books in the series, as listed below. The sequel to Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep.

Do you need the Solo Adventurer's Toolbox to play this? Or is it standalone as far as the rules/mechanics go?

I purchased this module and all subsequent modules that were available at the start of the pandemic. I had fun when I started but didn't finish. I just recently started again and noticed the internal links aren't working/present. I'm using Acrobat Pro DC. At first I figured I'd be ok just searching the keyword (eg. ADVENTUREBEGINS), but there are some places that don't list a keyword so I have nothing to search.

Do the PDF versions change over time to break the links? Is there some way to update?

Hey Joe
As a previous purchaser you should be able to just download a fresh copy, in which the links should hopefully be working! Hope that's helpful. Can you tell me which links specifically aren't working?

I am having trouble enjoying this, for 3 reasons.

1. Even if i created backgrounds for my character's, I didn't feel like my characters had any personal tie-in to the story and thus really had no reason to be there.
2. There were a lot of scenes where I felt that I was just reading a story being told and had no way for my characters to interact with the NPCs. This led me to feeling detached from the story instead of feeling like i was a part of it.
3. The first battle you face in the adventure is a 'deadly encounter' and almost killed my first character, and absouletly killed the other characers i sent through. I don't mind a final encounter in an adventure to be deadly, but most encounters should be difficult, not deadly.

These really aren't RPG's per se. just choose your own adventure so don't go in expecting to be immersed. For that you need a more solo RPG game

This was a pleasure to run through. I played a variant human shadow sorcerer. I realized partway through that magic/ranged attackers aren't particularly great in the adventure and healing was almost necessary. Fortunately, I managed to scape through mostly due to the fact that I spent the free 150gp you get at the start on 3 potions of healing. I'm very much looking forward to playing the next one! I may play through this adventure against sometime because I managed to walk straight to the final boss and ended up missing most of what was going on in the story. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to play D&D on their own. My only gripe with this adventure is how limiting it is in terms of choices, but that's always gonna be a grim reality with solo adventures.

I love this adventure, having played it myself solo. Now I'm a DM and I want to begin my new campaign with it! Is this available anywhere with the encounter flow in order, like a "standard" adventure module? If so, I'd love to purchase it again in that format. Thanks!

Hello! You mention in the Adventure Guide that you can supply the complete maps if I want to run this as a campaign? I'm considering running this as a duet or a small party. Thanks!

A well designed and thought-out adventure. I ran into some minor issues with broken links, and stealth consistency, but overall really enjoyed it...until I 'won' and was abruptly booted out of the adventure.

My dragonborn barbarian and elven bladesinger had fairly little trouble defeating the (double HP) Death Knight, after reaching him pretty directly. They really wanted to disarm him, tie him up, and then either take him back to the Red Tree or into town, not run away. It particularly stung to leave a magic sword behind...

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
